Paying Victoria Fines with AmEx

Hi all,

So I got a fine for passing the red light and it's a hefty price for me at the moment.

I've got an Amex card which I got some credit to use and I would like to get the points in the process but Amex is not accepted. So my plan is to get a Cash Passport (Mastercard) from the post office, load it with money from the Amex by the Post office, and use that to pay the fine.

The cash passport card seems to be free to obtain. So is there something I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance

    Yes the cash advance fee…

Amex isn’t debit, it’s a credit card so doing that is a terrible idea.

Huh??? How do you have credit to use?

If you must use a credit card, sign up for the ANZ black and get the points that way.

    • I got some credit on the Amex from a bank transfer I did from my Amex to another credit card. The other bank took more than I needed so it went as credit on the Amex

  • Buy Woolworths egiftcard, use this to buy visa/MasterCard gift card. Use that to pay at post office.

I'm not sure if this would work.. but definitely no cash advance fee for the egiftcard.

    • Unfortunately, woolies closed the loophole recently I think. eGift cards cannot be used to buy any type of gift cards, including Netflix, Google Play and ebay.

Ah, refreshing to see a "fines" thread asking how to maximise the rewards from paying a fine, rather than trying to get out of it.
    Well done.

    • I am actually disappointed - perhaps OP could regale us with the tale of how he/she got the fine, and we could assist in possibly getting out of it?

      • Very appreciated. I run a red light. I'm always cautious once it hits the amber light but I guess on this one occasion I went throught it. My letter says 1 second. My guess is one second after the red light hit? I always thought that on amber light, if your wheels are past the line then it's fine. I must have not been enough.

        • You shouldn't be guessing…Was the time the light switched to amber sufficient to stop if you were travelling at or below the speed limit.

One second is … well.. it's one second. It's quite a while.

I'd go back to the lights and check it's actually physically possible to react and stop safely before the lights turn red.

        • On amber light, you should prepare to stop prior to entering the intersection. Not get your wheels over line before the red. You're about 0.5 sec too late.

  • load it with money from the Amex by the Post office

    This is a cash advance.

To my knowledge Amex will credit 50% points on payments to goverment departments, all other credit cards earn zero points.

    • That's true. However with postbillpay it might be possible to still get full points earn.

passing? I think you mean RUNNING a red light and yes the hefty price matches the crime. Running red lights are dangerous as hell.

Use PayPal inconjunction with Post BillPay. Although just note you may only get half the amount of points. Happened to me when paying my Medibank Private premiums this way.
