Optus Prepaid International Roaming

I am about to activate a $30 Optus Prepaid that I will use for International Roaming.

Can anyone please confirm that my understanding about Optus Prepaid International Roaming is correct. If I activate my SIM on the following plan:

  • Optus Epic Data then I will have $5 to be used on International Roaming which is the value I got as Extras Credit
  • Optus Epic Value then I will need to buy Extras Credit add-on to be used on International Roaming
  • Daily Plus and Long Expiry then I will have $30 to be used on International Roaming

Which means that Daily Plus or Long Expiry are probably my best plan to activate on?

Thanks.

  • Activate it on Long Expiry, just in case they charged you $2 on the daily plus for whatever reason.

    • Yep that's what I did. Thanks.

Did you just want to receive SMSes and nothing else? That is always free when IR is supported. Other uses like receiving/making calls, sending SMSes, using data are crazy expensive so not recommended; get a local SIM.

    • Yes I will mainly need it just to receive SMS. While it is free and supported, do I actually need to have credit that I can use toward IR before I can receive SMS. What I mean is, hypothetically if I activate my SIM on Optus Epic Value and I don't purchase add on to get Extras Credit, will I still be able to receive SMS while overseas?

      • No you don't need credit to receive SMSes. You just need to activate IR.

        • I just installed My Optus app and check my International Roaming setting. It is On by default. Is that expected? I just don't want to get a "false active" by not doing anything.

        • @peuwayaqdq: Don't know, it depends on the telco, some have it on by default, some don't.

        • @peuwayaqdq: Maybe turn it off and turn it on again, hahaha?

        • Thanks @greenpossum. It was on and I had no issues. Received SMS that I was supposed to receive. Thanks.
