Budget eReader/Tablet - Any Suggestions

Hi Guys

My mother has 3 kindles but has decided she wants to be able to purchase ebooks from Booktopia etc but she cannot download these to her kindle. Booktopia suggested a different e-reader or tablet but couldn't provide recommendations.

So I was wondering if anyone here could please recommend a budget eReader or Tablet and if you have had any experiences with them?

Thanks very much!

  • Would it be too hard for her to get Calibre to convert purchased eBooks to Kindle format?
You can even set up a personal documents email so the books can be converted and delivered wirelessly to her Kindle.

    • Thanks. I did look into that but when I showed it to her she found it confusing and said she would prefer a separate device.
I might see if I can run through it again with her.

      • Depending on how tech savvy you are, you could potentially setup a shortcut script using the Calibre CLI, where your mother downloads a book, drags it onto a shortcut and a few minutes later it appears on her Kindle!
A script like this might have already been done by someone else, too.

        Edit: like this!

        • Thanks. I assume I need to remove the drm before converting with calibre?

        • @dylo: not sure, sorry

@theguyrules: No prob. Thanks for your help and links.

  • Booktopia ebooks are in ePub format iirc.

You can use Calibre to convert ePub into Mobi (kindle-compatible) or something like this works too:

    https://www.epubconverter.com/epub-to-mobi-converter/

    • Thanks, I'll check that link.

      • The link is just an online converter - you browse to the ebook (in epub format) you want to read on your kindle, select it, download it as a mobi (kindle friendly) file, and put that on your kindle. I use it fairly regularly.

        • Thanks. Do you need to remove drm before converting? Google gives me conflicting answers.

        • @dylo: Ah, that I don't know. You could try and see if it works - one ebook takes a few minutes at most. I haven't had any issues with any ebooks, but I also don't buy use booktopia.

        • @HighAndDry: Thanks, I'll give it a shot!

  • Kobo would be the common choice that isn't Kindle, but be aware she will still have to copy them across with the computer (although you can buy them on the device from the Kobo store). You'll need either an iPad or android tablet to get a way to do it on device.

    • Thanks, I was looking at Kobo. So there is no issue transferring a drm protected epub to the Kobo device from your PC?

Has always worked fine for me with the Adobe app. I borrow library books too which is super handy.

        • Thanks!
