[NSW] Discounted Energy Efficient Lighting. $33 for 15 LED Replacements Including Fitting @ NSW Government

90

I recently took advantage of this deal and was very happy with the price and results.

Entry level is replacement of 15 halogen downlight bulbs (MR16 or GU10) for $33 using the existing housings. There are several caveats that may result in extra costs. These include the type of transformer already in use and if it will work with the LEDs; Dimmers and the type of dimmer.

My downlight housings were looking sad and I didn't like the gymbals so I went with EcoVantage's offer of a total light and housing replacement. They also fitted 3 pin plugs in the ceiling cavity for every downlight.
Total cost to me was $495 for 33 lights which is around what it would have cost to DIY and maintain the hardwire connection.

The lights look good and the light output of the 12w warm white luminaires is as good / better than the 50w halogens I had previously.

If you have any PAR38 floodlights they will fit new LED bulbs in them too - free!

Thanks. My area is covered by both EvoVantage and Aussie Greenmarks. Anything I should be cautious with which one to go?

I did mine with Aussie Greenmarks, it took more than two months after booking for them to come and install as their scheduling depended on whether there are other jobs in the area so YMMV.

In terms of installation it was really just simple swap (I only did the simple MR16), easily and quickly done. Primsal globes were used and everything worked.

If you are planning to change complete dimming unit like mentioned in the OP, EcoVantage's $15 is definitely a great price. It is generally similar in terms of cost if you buy them kit yourself, but save on labour.

All work comes with warranty and consumer rights.

Thanks. My house has around 40 dimmable and non-dimmable lights. I assume the dimmer switches need to be upgraded as well? Aussie Greenmarks seem cheaper at first glance, but when adding all the upgrades the cost may be similar.

I had 4 dimmers. They were compatible and didn't need changing but I was prepared for the extra cost if they did need changing.

I will note that the LEDs don't dim as much as the halogens did.

I went with Ecovantage because their deal didn't have any "gotchas" and I liked the person on the other end of the phone. If you can get out of it for $33 for 15 fittings it's a no-brainer.

          @brad1-8tsi:

Yea same for my dimmable LEDs, they don't dim as much (I guess that makes sense as they consume much lesser wattage, and they need a minimum W to work properly?), but still very happy.

I actually called up EcoVantage as well and yea I like how they are just clear $15/globe regardless of type. If I haven't bought some dimmable LED to DIY myself, I would've gone with them for the dimmables, but I couldn't justify the cost for my non-dimmables so I went with Aussie Greenmarks to get my non-dimmables done.

          @zrmx:
My place. 33 downlights. 22 on dimmers. It's nuts I tells ya!

        • @brad1-8tsi:

Do you know the brand EcoVantage use?

        • @mantoh:

          Thanks!

        • @mantoh:
          That looks really good!

It is a dream for MR16/GU10 globe changers to just change light colours (DW/CW/WW) by flicking a switch. The Lumens/W also look very nice.

      • hey i bought the phillips LED bulbs from that last ozbargain deal. paid a few hundred bucks which im happy with

however i get a ton of flicker in different areas of the house. might be to do with some of the dimmers the previous owner installed.
will these guys come out and swap the units that power downlights as well, i wouldnt need a bulb change

        • Are the bulbs you have MR16? As flickering is usually compatibility issues with the transformer (which connect between the main power to the MR16 bulb).

I think they usually replace the whole setup to either full downlight unit (as shown above), or GU10 bulbs (instead of the existing MR16). Best to give all the suppliers a call to see what they'll do, as they approach the downlight upgrade differently.

          Good luck!

        • They have to do a change from halogen to LED. They actually take the bulbs away as part of the audit process.

Your issue is for a sparky to resolve at your cost.

I noticed that if you have MR16 halogens the LED conversion is to a GU10 and they remove the transformers.

The colours from the pic made me think this was a Nintendo Switch game.

  • How do I know if have halogen or LED downlights?

    • Halogen downlights are too hot to touch when they are on.

  • Thanks, Filled in form for Aussie Greenmarks. Waiting for callback
