EB Games 'Zero Regrets' Trade Policy - Trade Any Game and Buy It Back Later at Any Time for The Same Price

920

Bought Spidey at EB today and the staff told me about a new policy they're having.

Basically you can trade in any game into EB as normal, but EB will let you buy it back at any time (weeks, months, years later) for the same price you traded it in for, or lower if it’s on sale. It's linked to your EB world account, so you need to be one for this to apply.

        • @Diji1: It's a result of both their practise of "gutting" games for shelf display and also their 7-day return policy - as those games go back to being "new" on the shelf.

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up. Won't buy any games online.

    • I've been stung a few times buying games that were advertised as new only to receive a copy that was obviously used.

No wonder EB is going out of business pulling this shady crap.

  • After trading, I’m gonna run out the door yelling ”I have no regreeeeettttsssss”

  • +1

Basic thuganomics economics will tell you that this is not a bargain.

This just shows who their target market is…

    • Gamers, as a group, are poorer and dumber than the population as a whole, so it makes sense :p

    • +1

Not really, there are a lot of people who just can't figure out how to make EB deals work for them, and just write the system off as a bad system as a result.

      Here's a scenario:

You have $100 gaming budget for the month. This amount is not negotiable. There is a game (Game A) for $79.95 at EB, and $59.95 at JB Hi Fi.
You intend to permanently keep this game.

      1st of the month:
Go into EB, get game by price matching JB. Pay $60 for Game A.

      15th of the month:
A game comes out for $60 that you want, but you only want it for a weekend with mates. Lets call this Game B. Think a game like"Street Fighter Collection".
Trade in Game A for $20, add it your remaining $40. Buy Game B with the $60 you have. Currently at $0 of your budget.

After you have your weekend of Game B, return Game B for a full refund with the 7 day trade period. You now have $60 again.

Then rebuy Game A for the $20 you traded it in for.
You are back down to $40.

Granted, if you had $120 to play around to begin with, then this wouldn't be an issue, but $20 means a lot in some peoples budget.

      • +1

Yeah that's a real, plausible scenario that happens to me all the time

        • +1

Juggling money is definitely plausable to someone managing a tight budget.

        • @Cubist: Ur right mate, my bad

  • WTAF EB.

  • Just out of interest: Unlikely to retrieve the exact same traded in game, and if no longer in stock you just miss out retrieving the game. Do I understand this correctly?

Son never trades in his games; keeps everything.

    • +2

Isn’t that hoarding? I don’t really see the point in keeping games you’re never going to play again.

      • +5

        Collective value.

      • +1

This is why we use Steam.

      • +2

Videogame collecting is a great hobby.

      • I don't think a hoarding issue, so much as collecting hobby. Son enjoys collecting a few different things and still plays with several different games; I don't have any issues with this at all. I feel they hold a certain sentimental value too. Has retained all his Nintendo gear from GB Colour and the Cube; all in perfect working condition and neatly stored away. Always looked after his toys, so I was able to pass on many which were in near perfect condition to others; many to charities. Far better than seeing expensive toys trashed within days; seen that too often with others.

Ps. Some of his other collectable items are not made any more, are highly sought after, you just cannot find them to buy anymore. Some items he has ideas of playing with his own children one day.

    • +3

This is good. I wish I had done that when I was growing up. Somewhere between 10-25 years later, a lot of us get the urge to replay childhood games. This is why Nintendo is selling retro mini consoles, virtual console titles, etc.

I suggest you let your son keep his consoles / games / controllers, etc :)

      • No way, better off selling them while they're still worth something and re-buying 5-10 years later when they're temporarily worth very little.

Say I bought tons of games, finished them in a week and they've sat on the shelf since.
I could have sold for $70 and they bought them again any time between then and now be be way better off.
Very few games go above their RRP and stay there between 0-10 years. after 10 years maybe 1% of the library each year do.

Nobody builds a big game collection paying new release prices.

Best time to collect is when the new Gen is released.

Before that happens just buy, play, sell, you will be better off overall. If any games did happen to jump above RRP you will be so far in front that you can afford to pay more.

        • Very few games go above their RRP and stay there between 0-10 years. after 10 years maybe 1% of the library each year do.

When you take inflation into account, it gets a lot lower.

Would also say the best time to collect is further down the line. Generally when the console two generations away is being released. It's far cheaper to collect PS3 right now than it was when the PS4 was released.

        • +1

You make some good points there, especially true for modern mass-produced games and particularly the most popular of them.

          But regarding

Nobody builds a big game collection paying new release prices.

I know a few people who always buy 2 copies of every game. 1 to open and play, another to keep 'factory sealed' forever.

      • My son is an adult now, belong to him and will soon be 2 decades of collecting! I don't mind at all; never have. I just bought him storage boxes and insisted items were tidied away when not being used, from the very beginning, which he did.

(Games were quite expensive for me to buy after all, so I expected them to be looked after. Son was not spoilt).

Kept all the boxes etc. Mostly Pokemon, Star Wars, Mario Smash Bros.

Times we have been out visiting friends and you'd spot their child's GameBoy lying in their garden, covered in dirt! I imagine those games just did not survive.

    • +1

You could get one back that’s in even better condition than the one you traded in.

  • +1

Great deal. Wouldn't often need it, but great to have the option to take back game at bargain price you sold for.
It is actually quite smart for EB to offer this deal, as it takes away the worry when considering what to trade. I would certainly be more inclined to trade more, with the comfort of knowing I can change my mind later and get games back without losing anything .

  • Wow, they must be in more financial difficulty than what I was privy to know.

  • +1

I guess trades have slumped to the point they have to intoduce a new component to it.

  • Pro tip: You get more resale value on gumtree or ebay than EB Games.

Basically you can trade in any game into EB as normal, but EB will let you buy it back at any time (weeks, months, years later) for the same price you traded it in for. It's linked to your EB world account, so you need to be one for this to apply.

EB reminds me of the vendors in old Bioware RPGs where you could sell an item you don't want to a vendor for 500, but if you want to buy it back (even right away), you're paying 4X the price you sold it to them for. You had to be careful not to sell the wrong item by accident.

  • +1

Almost make me want to use holographic drink coasters again .. almost.

  • +3

If you're trading in to EB you're doing it wrong in the first place. How has this gotten front page?

  • not for me, but i assume this would be a solid deal for those who are short on money and need to 'pawn' a game to buy a new release and buy back their game at a later date.

  • What if they dont have the game any more? some games end up being worth a fair bit over time i'd some of the original N64/Game Cube games especially

If you go to buy it back lets say a PS4 games in 10 years time that has appreciated in value 10x what it was will they hunt it down and find you a copy? or just be like you are shit out of luck mate?

I dont really like EB they are over-priced - they do have some good specials but they are a business that is quickly becoming irreverent with the rise of digital game downloads expending to consults not just PC…

    • I highly doubt any game from current consoles will become rare to the point it will appreciate to higher than rrp. The only reason old games have value is because a lot of them weren’t mass produced and the retro/vintage nostalgia value. But even then they are becoming irrelevant due digital releases and remakes.

I can only think of a few retro games that have reached ridiculously high prices.

      • +1

Never say never someone purchased the original ipod for 8k USD recently

I can see games in the current generation increasing in value especially 'limited edition' versions of games like uncharted, Battle Front for example

There will be a time when games on CD/Blu rays/DVDs will be a thing of the past like Vinyl and game cartridges and it will be a collectors item.

The world is changing to be more digital if you look at the cost of some original Vinyls you would be shocked!

        • Vinyls are back in and are being reprinted. If a re release comes out the value drops considerably.

      • +1

It's hard for games to reach rare status these days due to two factors: Digital sales, and constant Remasters.

Collector value happens for very old games and only if they're sealed and in original release label, not budget label.

  • +1

    No ragrets

  • +4

Why does this have so many upvotes?

  • +1

    Sort of related

I saw a form on their desk about a garanteed trade back of $60 for the new Spider-Man game but I was never given it

Does anyone know the timeframe of the trade deal or if it's only for selected people ….. I.e people who paid full price for the game

    • It’s for everyone. Also EB World level bonus stacks with it, ie 10% extra for level 2 members making it $66 trade in.

  • only benefit I can see from this deal is that "you can hide your game library temporarily from girlfriend/missus so you can buy more games"

  • +1

I misread this as EB regrets their business model haha

  • -1

Do you get back the actually copy that you traded or a different copy?

If the latter what happens if they don't have it.

    • +1

It’s likely that it’d be a different copy and subject to availability. If you trade in something rare or popular don’t expect to get it back.

    • No they buy the copy off you, write your name on it and hold it in storage just in case you ever decide to buy it back.

  • I guess a benefit would be if your copy is really mangled and they happened to have a nicer copy, you could essentially swap them?

  • Great way to trade in a game if it's not playing properly for a working one at the same price.

  • Don't get the 'regret' thing. I just know games will only become cheaper over time.

If I traded in the game for $10 now, it will be worth less than $10 in a few months/years. Why would I want to pay $10 again?

    • If I traded in the game for $10 now, it will be worth less than $10 in a few months/years. Why would I want to pay $10 again?

Not always. If you get $10 for trading in the game, EB is selling it for ~$30

I traded in 40 odd games a few weeks back. One or 2 I regret trading cause of the really low trade in value, but now I can't get it back without buying it at the pre-owned price.

  • Should have been called "No Ragrets"

  • -3

Regret? buy it back later? Hell no.

Traded all my ps4,xbox one and wii u games for $4.5k store credits

I am so glad I went All Digital on my next gen consoles as now I have extra storage space,….extra funds to upgrade my other 2 xboxes to make it XXX and its all press and load for my Library.

Screw you SONY for making only 1x main PSN console for offline while microsoft have up to 4.

    • $4.5K … that's an awful lot of games and consoles!

      • +2

actually, thats' only games…did it especially with my birthday bonus ^o^

        • +1

Just wondering, did you consider selling privately, initially?

Just saw the 50% bonus credit on Birthday. Was unaware they did that, thank you for adding.

        • +1

          @Cubist:

Actually i did, I tried selling on gumtree for a few weeks but only sold less than 10 games and too much replying on low ballers kindly as some people can be rude but not me as anyone is a potential customer :)

Then I waited a month or so for my birthday to utilize the 50% coupon with my 25% eb world making it 75%.

It was a long process but totally worth it. I did try to get the ebmanager to remove all the $10 games aside but he forgot. In the end when he told me the amount I was like ok just give me the store credit as its a nice amount.

        • +1

          @luffyex2010:

Not a bad time to trade in. Will keep that in mind cheers. I will definitely spend 4k in consoles over the years at EB as I like to grab collectors editions.

Were they alright with just having the credit sit there on your account, or did you need to put it on a gift card/towards pre-orders?

        • +1

          @Cubist:
All on one pre order that I will never get as I am on the digital train now.

NSW is stuck with store credits to prevent petty thieves i guess but I think qld and vic has cash options but i could be wrong .

Forgot to mention that the store credit has no expiry as they can always change the pre order to another game and no exchanging to gift cards.

Gumtree and Game shops like GAME (r.i.p) and EBgames are very important in this trade in cycle and without them gaming would be so expensive and if you know what you are doing its a very affordable and fun gaming hobby.

          Happy Gaming

        • +1

          @luffyex2010:

Put pre-orders on limited edition consoles, sell them day 1 for the price you paid on gumtree. Easy way to transition your store credit to cash.
Worst case scenario, the console doesn't sell out and you move your pre-order to something else.

        • +1

@luffyex2010: While the digital train provides convenience, in terms of trading, you cannot trade digital games.

I found most games I only play through once. I have no intention to keep majority of the games. Having physical discs can also help the initial install. You cannot correct impulsive buys on digital. I made too many unwise digital purchases (part of the issue was I received PSN credits and Microsoft XBox store credits from trading in some games to EB previously).

        • I'd hate to think how much we have paid for son's games over the years. Just sounds like a real lot of money there. Maybe I better not do a audit!

        • +1

          @JediJan:

Yup better not. It's the experience, fun, happiness, and enjoyment your son/family gets to play together.

          Which is priceless.
