I'll start off by saying I'm tight. Due to my tightness, I have managed to save and recently built a new house.
Where do my OzB colleagues buy modern prints/artwork without paying extravagant amounts? What is the best online retailer for in-trend prints? Something nicer than Kmart/Ikea and not as generic as Freedom.

Don't know how your area compares to the North Shore of Sydney, but every downsizing expensive home that also auctions its contents (furniture, art and other contents) typically includes a David Bromley print or two.

Decide what that is, and that will dictate where you get them.
There are a few auction houses that advertise heavily, or you might find a gallery having a sale / closing down.
