Exhausts - What Is Legal for Forester Turbo Diesel?

Hey all,

I live in Vic and was wondering what was legal for an exhaust system. While still keeping the Cat in place am I allowed to remove the muffler and replace it with plain pipe as long as it doesn't break the sound limit? Which is 90 db I believe. Can't find much on Vic roads or EPA website so not too sure.

Also I'm not much a car guy myself so if I did this cheap "muffler delete" on my Subaru Forester Diesel would there be any negative impacts on engine performance or like black smoke coming out of the exhaust?

It is a 2012 Turbo Diesel 6-Speed Manual Forester

Thanks!

Either way it will sound fully sick.

    • Yeah hopefully the Diesel sound isn't too strong but will sound real nice

On a diesel? Don't do it, you'll look like an idiot.

Subaru exhaust upgrades are for turbo petrol engines only. N/A or diesel will just get you laughed at. And since it's not for any benefit other than noise, there's no point. Money would be better spent elsewhere.

Few videos on YouTube of Foresters seem to be with tunes and removing the DPF. Your mod is just the cheap way, which won't give the sound they're getting.

    • Are you saying this because Diesel engines sound drastically diffferent to petrol ones?

It as a turbo diesel if that would make any difference but I think all diesels are anyway

      • Turbos tend to flatten out the exhaust notes. When the exhaust leaves the cylinder, it all has to go through the turbo. The turbo being a blockage to the exhaust flow tends to back up the exhaust pulses and lets it out as a much smoother hum as it goes through the turbo.

Diesels also run much higher compression and at much slower revs. So, without a turbo on it, it would be as loud as Satan on saucepans without any mufflers.

Don’t do it, you will just look like an idiot with an offensively loud shitbox.

Loud, obnoxious, offensively loud Subaru cars are a bit of a cliche…

no way you can stay under noise limit with a muff delete

  • No point if it is just for sound. It’s probably an automatic too isn’t it?

    • Nah its a 6 speed manual

2012 model so this was before Subaru even started making automatic diesels

You can’t really “delete” a muffler and expect it to be quiet. The other issue is that it is turbocharged. This has the issue of flattening out that thumping note you want and turning it more into a hum, drone or a buzz.

You won’t get extra power from it. It may mess with your cars harmonics and just make a stupid droning sound throughout the cabin and you will invariably piss off your neighbors and get laughed at by everyone else. It’s a diesel, it will not sound like you think it will sound.

If you want a straight through system, get a diverter valve fitted so when you are at the local race track and want to sound like you are going fast, you can switch it over. Driving home, switch it back.

And don’t forget your P plates when you drive…

Yeah that seems fair enough the diesel not sounding like a nice petrol. Guess I'll just leave it with the stock muffler then - don't have any dreams for upping the performance so that wasn't a major factor.

I am actually still on my L's but get where you're coming from with the comment on P plates…
I will most likely buy this car off my parents and so was looking at what I could do to it once it's mine. Definitely won't do anything right now as it's not mine.
