Comment on My Build (Please)

Hi all,

This is my PC build which I'm going to get from Computer Alliance. I'd appreciate any feedback on the parts used.

The main things I'll be using it for is software development with some gaming (not a lot really). So compiling stuff and running android emulators, etc.

I'm just going to use the cooler that comes with the 2700x to keep costs down for now.

  • thicc build.

If you want to keep $$ down perhaps get a non-fancy rgb'd PSU, like an EVGA 600B which are superior in quality

Formatting! If you want us to help, be considerate enough to take out extraneous info like "1" or "In Stock". Make it easier for people to help you, and you'll get more help. For anyone else:

Main use is software development with some gaming?

Depends on what kind of software development. I mean, if you want to save money, you can get a non-RGB PSU to start. You might want to splash more on an SSD (upgrade to a 970 Pro) if you're working with larger filesizes. Possibly even get 32GB of RAM as well, though you can always add another 2 x 8GB kit later. Personally I also think the mobo is also a little overkill, but there might be features of the X370 chipset you need for your coding so I can't really comment there.

All in all, seems like a fairly balanced system for non-gaming primary use, if it's one that doesn't need a lot of GPU power, because the one glaring issue is that the GPU is proportionally underpowered.

    • I took your parts list - sorry

I'm really bad at formatting on ozb :(

      Thank you for your comments

      • No worries - just for next time.

Also, since I haven't said it yet, that's a pretty kickass build. I'm almost sad you're not using it for gaming, because a RTX 2080 Ti would be right at home in among those parts. (Not saying to get one mind you, especially if you're not going to be gaming).

        • I am a filthy console fanboy truthfully - I have my Xbox One S out in the loungeroom which I use for Forza.

I have a Acer Predator laptop with a 6700HQ cpu in it. It's been good for a couple of years but I feel it now, working on phone apps and using things like the Android Emulator etc. Visual Studio (which I spend my life in) lags heaps… hence the upgrade :D

For arguments sake though, my screen has a native res of 3440x1440, and Forza Horizon 4 comes out later this month. If I wanted to play it on this screen on high settings, what kind of minimum GPU would I need?

        • @misterpotatomato:

          1070 or RX580 (8GB Vram) to play at a constant 60+ fps comfortably @ 2k res

        • @misterpotatomato: Oh nice screen, that's an ultrawide?

At normal 60Hz, you'd want at least a GTX 1070 on decent settings. If your monitor goes higher, say 100Hz or 144Hz (or even higher…) then probably upgrade to a GTX 1080 or a Vega 64 (nVidia cards still run faster and cooler in general). BUT! Forza 7 ran a little better on AMD cards (Vega 64) than the nVidia counterpart (GTX 1080) so if FH4 is the same, a Vega 64 would probably be the best dollar/performance proposition.

Or you can just get a 1080Ti which still sets the bar.

        • @HighAndDry:

Please don't judge me, but I'd rather take the money for the 1080TI and just get an Xbox One X and put it in my loungeroom (I'm a fan of plug and play gaming like that)

        • @misterpotatomato:
Plug and play died years ago with the constant needs of updates and internet connection.

@dasher86: I'm fairly fortunate, with Telstra cable and the current xbox updates when I'm not using it. I'm not a console fanboy, I just see the value in that solution (like I see the value in my wifes macbook pro). It wasn't always this way though, 10 years ago I was burning apple/console users.

        • @misterpotatomato: Oh I'm not a die-hard PC-gamer, don't worry.

Also, nice updates. Yeah, moving to the B350 chipset is good savings, moving to an RX580 is much more balanced (for gaming), and fully modular PSUs are a godsend.

@HighAndDry: How is everyone on here possibly this reasonable? I post something with horrific formatting, someone formats it with me, and now we're talking about consoles and the response isn't "xbox sucks lol rekt".

          OzB community = A+

        • @misterpotatomato: Hahaha uh, don't go reading my comments in some other threads. But you're reasonable and self-aware and honestly your post, even including formatting, is better than a lot of others, some of which are just: "I want a PC build, recommend me parts?"

  • Go an rx580 if you can, I got one for low $300s

  • if you'll be running 4k , get 8gb rx580 for a little more

  • It's "good value" because ultimately it will be earning you money.

And sticking to AMD Hardware is a good idea so you can run other OS like Native Android, Hackintosh, SteamOS, ElementaryOS, Debian, openSUSE etc etc.

    • Hackintosh on AMD? That sounds difficult (I thought apple stuff was all Intel?)

      • Nope.
The CPU stuff is easy, it's the graphics that are difficult. Apple has been on AMD-Camp for a while now, and there's even open-source drivers for AMD GPUs. Check the forums, the best Hackintosh machines all have Vega or Polaris, even the old R9 290 and HD7950(bios flash) run smooth… sometimes better than Nvidia's Maxwell and Pascal.

  • you could do with a 240gig M.2. SSD for OS and a few programs, then get a 500gig ssd with the money you save on a 500gig m2, and use the 500gig for storage.

You're going to notice a massive increase in speed going to an M.2, so you dont need the fastest M.2 available.

And your build is great for Cemu and Rpcs3 emulators if you want to continue your gaming. get the dongle for your xbox one controller and you're laughing. youtube those emulators

    • The laptop has m2 ssd already. Its not samsung though. YEah I thought the speed difference between Evo and Pro to be not much.

  • Should we mention you could have got 20% off most/all of those prices over the weekend just gone?

    I would be getting a less game-y B450 mobo, a gold non-RGB PSU and prob the RX580 8gb or even a Vega.

    • I know :'( I messaged CA to see if they could do any more discounts on the stuff. I don't like my chances.

Might hold out to the next ebay sale…

      • Hopefully eBay birthday coming up this month. 19% off?

    • Updated build as above, B350 board and rx580… thoughts?

      • +1

Looks pretty good to me. Keep in mind B350 board will need a bios update for second gen Ryzen chips (incl 2700x). CA I believe are pretty good at doing this, but other sellers may not be so would be prudent to confirm. I would be inclined to get a B450, but not sure there is huge difference between the two besides the 450 not needing a bios update and maybe being a bit more future-proof.

Most of those parts or quite similar can still be had for '20% off' (more like 10% off RRP) from sellers involved in the Pixel coupon on eBay at the moment.

        • Yeah. I'm kind of a fan of being able to take the whole thing back to CA if any of the parts needs waranty though.

  • From somebody who just recently built a pc but was limited by my case and form factor.. go hard and get a GTX 1080 minimum

with that CPU it deserves a 1070 or higher easily.. save up for it or whatever but don't go small you will regret it in the long run

I went with a i7-2600 so GTX 1050Ti feels justified but I still regret not getting a different case and going maybe 1060 6gb or even 1070 with this pc i have right now.

I really stuffed up but I tell myself the small tiny case form factor is worth it.. pro tip.. it kind of is not :( not small enough or light enough to carry around places.. not big enough to fit much storage or larger psu or gpu/cpu

feels bad man.. ah well what do they say again.. everything is better when you get a 2700X and a 1080ti

forget RTX cards it is bs unless you have money to burn.. and we still have to wait for benchmarks but now is the time to get GTX 1080's or 1080ti's

    • What case did you get?

      • Prebuilt HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF.. came with an i7-2600 and 240 watt psu no brand I believe scary part about my build.
