After a bout of food poisoning been trying to become more hygenic and get separate chopping boards for meat/non meat products. Found these which fit the ball, comes with antislip material on the bottom to stop sliding around.

  • hmm..
    Wood was rejected for kitchen use, as it can be scratched. Then again, wood dries out, whereas these retain moisture in their scratches.
    I'll stick with my ebony board, maintained by exposure to sunlight and a rinse with vinegar and drying after chopping meat or anything 'juicy'. Most cooks put a tea-towel under the board.

      • I had noticed. I prefer wood, as it has the best antibiotic property I know of, the ability to dry. Plastic retains moisture…

    If the meat board is in the position to contaminate, then it will contaminate the next lot of meat on it. Or spores from mouldy veges will contaminate the next lot of veges.

    The bad thing I see is that these boards have grooves and embossed logos - the hardest places to clean and thus most susceptible to contamination.

    I'll stick with caring for a single wooden end-grain board, and only using the groove side when I have a particularly runny substance. Cuts in the wood don't make it look ugly either.

    • i use a big end grain board from aldi. If i'm cutting poultry or fresh fish or bloody meat i tend to put a thin flexible mat on top of it. they're dish washable and if i break one with a cleaver i haven't broken something expensive

  • Wash chopping boards in the dishwasher.

    If chopping up raw meat (especially Chicken or Pork) a quick rinse and put it in the dishwasher.

    If you're really paranoid, scrub/soak it in a 1:25 bleach:water solution, then put it in the sun (wood or white plastic ones).

  • Confused - are these polypropylene or silicone? Both are mentioned. Plastic boards are useful as they can be washed in the dishwasher but become a problem once you cut into them and create grooves/scratches that can't be easily cleaned (where bacteria will start to breed). Some wood boards have bacterial resistant properties and can be cut down as in a butcher's block. These indicate the boards are also antibacterial - what is it that makes them this way and will it contaminate your food?

  • Bamboo end-grain boards FTW, and by a LONG way. No, you cvan't put them in the dishwasher, and you have to clean them properly. well worth it for every reason, including hygiene and knife care.
