Dash Cam with Automatic Parking Mode Feature

Hi, I need a suggestions to buy a good picture quality dash cam.

Dash cam must have a automatic parking mode feature in it. As, I am buying this dash cam more importantly to use while Car is parked on streets or car parking. Suggest good brand that lasts long. I am looking at around $300 mark. Suggest the price range as well. I also need 2nd dash cam might be cheaper one with same features if possible. New with the dash cams.

So, all suggestions appreciated. Need to buy in hurry as recently been victim of hit and run case & could not figure out Car details who did it.

  • So do you want the car to park by itself? won't happen unless it is integrated with the car.

You need a system that is hardwired into the battery and with collision detection.

No. It is a feature that keeps recording automatically at a lower frame rate when parked.

  • The length of time it can record whilst parked, depends on a number of factors, eg if it is connected to your car battery or a external battery source.

I think you might need a time machine to help with that one…

All jokes aside - yup, basically you need to hardwire it to your car (to a circuit that outputs power even when the car's engine is off), you'll need a voltage cut-off device (or external battery) so that it doesn't drain your car's battery if left for too long (and then you won't be able to start the car), and you need collision detection.

Only really the last part is a feature of the dashcam itself, in addition to the dashcam just having a function to stay on 24/7, all the others are external things you'll have to do no matter what dashcam you get.

  • a lot of dashcams have a sensor so when the car is parked and no movement is detected the camera goes to sleep as soon as the sensor picks up movement it will start recording. so depending on where you park your car and how much movement is around then that will determine how much you record.

    factors to consider
    - your cars capacity to maintain power for the period it is parked
    - the memory capacity of the dashcam. mine only takes upto 64Gb cards,
    - where you are parked. if its on a busy street, then it will basically record the whole time if you are parked in a carpark, then only records when movement is detected,

Dash cam must have a automatic parking mode

I don't think you'll find a dash cam that will park a car for you, that's some james bond shit you are asking for

Another factor to consider is if your car is still under warranty. Some dealers will void warranty if you hard wire a dashcam directly into the electrics without it being done by an authorised installer.

Why not just hook up a powerbank in between the car charger and your dashcam? A powerbank battery should last longer than your dashcam battery. Just need to make sure you powerbank supports pass through charging.

    • powerbank in the car with Australia summer not a very good combination.
Also how could you charge the powerbank? Powerbank cant supply power while charging

      • +6

You charge the powerbank using another powerbank.

        • +2

Powerbanks all the way down baby!

      • +3

Powerbank cant supply power while charging

My powerbank does it because it supports pass-through charging as I mentioned before.

        • still not suggesting to put inside your car with the heat.

Powerbank cant supply power while charging

This would also defeat the purpose, because I assume your car is parked a lot longer than its engine is on, so eventually the powerbank would also run out of juice (time powering dashcam much > time spent charging).

Unless you plug the powerbank into a port that's powered even when the car's off…. in which case you still have the problem of potentially having a flat battery if you leave your car parked too long.

I use a Xiaomi powerbank to power the Blueskysea B1W whilst parked. Works very well, and very happy with the picture quality of the dashcam too.

      • This is a very good idea!!!

Wouldn't it be better to put this money into a better insurance policy / lower excess?

    • +1

It's not either-or. If you have a dashcam and can show/prove how damage was incurred, especially if you can identify the other party, that can help to both support not-at-fault claims, and allow your insurance to pursue the other party for costs.

So for example: If you're involved in an accident where the car in front reverses into you and drives off:

      1. You can prove it wasn't a case of you rear-ending the other car, which would be presumed to be your fault (so you can make a not-at-fault claim); and

      2. You can identify the other car (number plate) which in a lot of cases means your insurance company won't charge you the excess, or will refund you it once it's recovered from the other driver.

Dashcam is one-off price that can protect against multiple incidents. Insurance you have pay every time. Not to mention your premiums will most likely go up with a claim and you cannot identify the other driver.

A dashcam is also either the same or cheaper than most excesses, so it pays for itself after the first accident. Many accidents come down to one persons word against the others, so having video evidence of what occurred makes it far easier to prove your word.

My sister was driving behind a ute when a paint tin fell out the back, landed on the road and showered her car in paint. The guy just kept driving and since there was no damage to his car and no other witnesses, it really was just her word that it was him that caused the damage if it weren't for her dashcam. It was very costly to fix as the whole front end of the car had to be resprayed, so no doubt her premiums would have gone up significantly.

Lukas ADAS AR790 Dash Cam Ebay - has built-in parking mode, but you have to either wire it to the fusebox or add a LK-350 Battery Kit.

I have a Lukas 7950 that is DIY wired in (actually pretty easy to do) and the parking mode works well.

  • Disregard the comments that says dashcams must be hardwired while operating in parking mode.

We used 20000mah xiaomi power banks to power a119s + gps module during the hottest days ever recorded in Sydney 2017. The a119s was and is currently powered by 3 power banks on rotation. Each lasting ~36hr depending on traffic.

They’re now due for a replacement with either a new batch of xiaomi or ravpower 26800mah.

  • I have 2 cars. 4 viofo A119 and A119s camera in the larger car and 2 in the smaller car.
    SUMMARY OF SETUP.
Buy a sealed agm battery. Put in boot.
Buy battery charging kits, usb multi output board, 3 way switch.(Aliexpress as suggestion)
    Wire;CAMS to USB board.
USB board 12v supply to 3 way switch.
3 way switch..1 side to vehicle cig lighter, other side to 12v agm battery.
Battery charge controller fed from feed from cig lighter.

Easy switch over when parking. Time of course depends on battery size. I use 9Ah.

Alternately buy 2 batteries. One always fully charged. Wire in cig lighter socket on batteries. Move cig plug(from camera feeds) from car to battery cig socket when needed.

Alternate. Buy $500 car parking cam..EACH

Naturally. Fully secure and protect boot battery, and fuses of course.

  • Look at the Blackvue series.
They use a capacitor, instead of batteries and you have a large range of units, and you can buy their "Power Magic" I think its called for parking.
Expensive, but very good, as we have one, so speak from experience.
Of Course a lot cheaper on Amazon, but one can use a shipping fowarder
