They don't look very good. Even though chicken is the main ingredient, it's not "chicken meal", meaning once cooked and the water has evaporated, chicken is a minor part of the food and it's mostly rice and grain since that's the second, third and fourth ingredients.
Also can't find a review on www.petfoodreviews.com.au for this food.
chicken is a minor part of the food
No it's the main part, there is more chicken than any of the other ingredients.
That's how ingredient lists work.
I won't reply rudely like you did because what you believe is common. Also, that's after plumping and before cooking.
So it's a very minor part of the ingredients.
As you say, if multiple ingredients are in order, the first is the highest percentage, then it gets lower and lower as it goes through the list.
But if the second, third and fourth ingredients are cheap filler, then the first is possible to be to be no more than 26%.
Once the water is cooked out of the chicken, going by weight, it's going to be much less than 26%.
Therefore this food is most likely very low in meat quantity and much better foods exist for less than half the RRP of this. I guess this will keep your dog alive like fast food will keep a human alive but the quality may be far from ideal. I love my dog so I'd never feed her anything resembling this ingredient list.
I did not write my reply to be rude, I wrote it to state that it cannot be a minor part if it is the first listed ingredient.
That's how ingredient lists work.
If you had all of the raw / ingoing ingredients to make this dog food then the main one by weight will be chicken.
Did you even read their initial comment, or even their reply?
I didn't mean to be rude either, sorry mate.
But if the ingredient "chicken" is 10% or 30% or 70% water, once cooked, is it still the main ingredient?
That's why "(chicken, beef, lamb etc) meal" is an ingredient used by reputable pet food manufacturers. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out before measuring the weight with the intention of being honest and transparent.
@bm:
No worries :)
Yeah I get where you are coming form.
If it is cooked and the water has come out, is it still the main ingredient? Yes it is.
Is it the main composition? Probably not.
Maybe I view things differently…
The chicken versus chicken meal is interesting.
Weight for weight chicken meal can potentially provide a higher level of amino acid (protein) however it depends how the meal is prepared.
If it is excessively heated and dried then this process can destroy the amino acids leaving the chicken meal as a low grade form of food.
Starting with raw chicken can mean you are starting with a higher quality ingredient so even though it is in the finished product in a lower quantity compared to a meal it may actually provider a higher level of nutrition.
Chicken meal starts raw too and we don't know how either is cooked unless the ingredients are analyzed via the final product.
Either way, I firmly believe good and honest manufacturers specify the "meal" version so consumers can make a reliable and equitable comparison and choice.
@bm: Sorry I have to agree with @spaceflight here.
Since the quantities of the ingredients are not given it would be impossible to conclude that even after the dehydration of chicken that there is more grains and rice etc.
The main considerations when comparing "chicken" with "chicken meal" is the parts of the chicken used and the end processed weight. For example 1kg of chicken will be comprised of chicken meat inc skin whereas chicken meal contains whole carcass inc bone, organs and any residual meat. Since the chicken is dehydrated 1kg of chicken may only be equivalent to 300gr of chicken meal however in this case there is nothing to say how much chicken or chicken meal is in the end product so the dog food above may well have more chicken than the other ingredients even after dehydration.
On a side note, I have visited the Coles Retail Ready Meats factory in NSW through my line of work and visited the chicken processing plant. Apart from the fowl smell (pun intended), we were shown the process of preparing chickens. Long story short, it was explained that 100% of the chicken is used. After the breast, thigh etc are processed the meat offcuts are used to make processed chicken products like, chicken mince, chicken nuggets etc and also dog food, it was explained that nothing goes to waste with the carcass' also being used for dog food. It makes sense since the carcass' are useless for humans consumption and can be bought and processed cheaply to be included in pet food providing nutrition at cheaper cost.
That's interesting @winner105
Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_meal says
Chicken meal is the dry rendered product from a combination of clean chicken flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from whole carcasses of chicken, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet and entrails.
and up to 10% water, while regular chicken is up to 70% water. There's a massive difference in product between the meal and non-meal meat ingredient.
Your comment has made me curious about the "chicken" (non meal) product on pet foods - could it consist of the same ingredients?
edit:
https://blueseal.com/tech-talks/chicken-and-chicken-meal-wha…
Let’s differentiate between chicken and chicken meal. The definition for chicken, according to the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), describes it as a clean combination of flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from parts of whole carcasses of chickens thereof, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet and entrails. Chicken meal, according to AAFCO, is the dry rendered product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with and without accompanying bone, derived from whole carcasses of chicken thereof, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet and entrails. Chicken essentially is taking a roaster and grinding it up, mixing everything together including muscle, skin and bones. The water content averages around 70%, along with 18% protein and 5% fat. Now take this ground chicken and carefully dry it to a moisture level of 10%. The protein content is now 65% and the fat level is 12%. This product is chicken meal.
So the definition looks like it's the same thing. I'd like to hear any insider knowledge you can share if that's not the whole story.
@bm:
Fresh chicken, once cooked loses most of its moisture reducing the weight by up to 70% (like you mentioned) which is the big cause of the fresh vs meal argument since its the pre-weight that goes on the ingredients list. So for example lets say 100gr of fresh chicken only ends up being 30gr of chicken whereas 100gr of chicken meal is still 100gr of chicken meal. Although the argument I put forward is that since no proportions are given, the hypothetical 100gr of fresh chicken which ends up being 30gr of chicken might still be the main ingredient post production. Or comparable in proportion to chicken meal.
But on the side note;
Your definition has it correct, basically "Chicken" is everything taken off the carcass which you could eat yourself and "chicken meal" is made from the carcass and the rendering of otherwise unusable scraps into concentrated powder. I found this good video which makes more sense of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqM4zW7WuPE
Although the argument I put forward is that since no proportions are given, the hypothetical 100gr of fresh chicken which ends up being 30gr of chicken might still be the main ingredient post production. Or comparable in proportion to chicken meal.
I understand your comments now, previously I incorrectly thought you were suggesting "chicken" was either empirically or scientifically always superior to "chicken meal".
From studying each dog food review on www.petfoodreviews.com.au I noticed a pattern on a few. Foods that use "meal" ingredients or multiple non-junk meat products as the first/second/third ingredients tend to contain fewer consecutive cheap fillers as a second and subsequent ingredient(s) to dilute the percentage of the primary expensive quality ingredient(s). I feel this as a sign of integrity.
Do you know what product was being made at the Coles petfood factory you visited? Continue via PM?
I appreciate your insights.
Just grabbed 2 of these. Cheers mate.
Thanks OP, bought two. Worth the delivery ;)
Great Price, hope the puppys like it. Fingers crossed this gets honoured.
Seems like a price error, ordered 2 for pick up see if they would honour it.
Yeh has to be an error. I nearly fell off my perch seeing that price. The Nutro brand is what i have fedmy dogs since they were puppies (now 12) and the lowest a bag has probably ever been is $80 odd.

Repeat delivery is at the price when the item is sent to you.
It does not lock in a price.

Bought 2 bags anyway for C&C.
