Help with New PC build

So i need a windows system for data analysis for a research project i'm involved in.

Currently i have a 2017 MBP 13 - which sadly the software cant run on (doesn't work on OSX)

So i was looking to build a cheap compact PC and came up with this, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Intel Skull Canyon NUC i7-6770HQ for $680 via ebay ( https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-BOXNUC6I7KYK4-Skull-Canyon… )
  2. 2 x 8gb SODIMM ram for $195 via ebay ( https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SODIMM-DDR4-8GB-2400MHz-Crucial-… )
  3. Kingston 2.5" sata drive for $100 via ebay ( https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/480GB-Kingston-2-5-A400-SATA-6Gb… )

total of $970 , already have a keyboard and mouse

and also any advice on a cheap decent monitor ?

Thanks

Why not use boot camp on your Mac. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204990

    • Good point i'll check it out thanks

  • VMWare - ~$120
Windows 10 license - potentially free if you get it through your uni, MSDN, etc.

You could use AWS if you just want something for the short term.

Dell Optiplex 9010/20 would be a lot cheaper if getting a windows computer is your only requirement.

    • My thinking was i could grab this build and just keep it at home long term as a desktop

Ok - is there a reason you are going for a nuc? I think a normal desktop would be better for the long-term (upgradable, faster, etc).

        • Just because of how compact it is to be honest

@paraneoplastic: You pay a bit of a premium and give a up a lot of flexibility and upgradeability (amongst other compromises) in going with a NUC, I wouldn't recommend it - any SFF build would be okay for general compactness reasons.

    • Saw that one, is the ram upgradeable on those? It seems i will likely need about 16gb to run the large excel files and to be able to keep a lot of skews open in the program
