[Advice Needed] Should I install Security Cameras and Alarm System at Home?

Hi All,

I am considering whether I should or should not install security cameras and alarm system at my place.

My house is an old house, and I don't have expensive items, just a few TVs, laptops, ipads and some jewellery items.
Sometimes my kids stay at home by themselves.

Can you advise on why I should or should not install a security system?

Thanks in advance.

  • Yes, you should, as you can monitor your home from your office or while your on vacation. It's also handy to receive notifications to your phone informing you that someone is at the front door, or if someone is in your backyard at night.

    • Can a security camera do that? What about if possum passing by, will it provide alert?

      • Depends what DVR you get. Regarding animals, you can set the motion sensitivity to High, Medium or Low. You can also select a certain area where you wish to receive notifications from. For example, If you have a camera pointing out towards the road you can deselect the road and walkways. So that you won't be constantly receiving notifications day and night.

If you share your exact address, we can google map or come visit and see what level of security you need.

Also a floor plan, and where you hide your safe to see if it's good to hide the DVR in the same spot?

      • And where you hide your spare key, and also a copy of the family calendar

If you live in the western suburbs of melbourne then i'd say HELL YES

    • Burglers in Melbourne have a free ride so take all precautions. Only the really dumb ones get caught.

you can always use this option if you same some spare or old mobile phones https://alfred.camera/

i purchased a heap of cheap phones from woolies and coles and some second hand ones from ebay and set them up around the house

  • What is the risk in the area you are in? No point if it is low risk, if high risk you might be better spending on securing the property. Cameras and alarms aren't always the best security, you might be better off with a sensor light and trimming shrubs near entry points.

We are in a fairly low risk area (I think) and the main entry points are visible from the street or neighbours and we have good neighbours. We have cameras, but just a cheap Aldi kit that I installed myself. I haven't checked footage at all on it except when setting up.

  • Why not actually do research instead listening to everyone's guesses?

I.e. look at crime rates, quote for a system, do some basic probability calculations…

  • A dog tends to be pretty effective deterant and also they are fun. Less nice: they pop lots.

… and need feeding, walking, grooming and cause vet bills. If only there was some way of creating an electronic version that only activated when you weren't home.

  • We got an alarm as soon as we moved into our house. Not because we feel unsafe, or because the area is particularly unsafe. It was more because most people I know that have alarms bought them after they were broken in to and that seems to be like trying to shut the gate after the horse has bolted, so I wanted to be more proactive than that.
