  • Got this in an email just a little ago. Was hoping it would be an external SSD for that price as the email titled - SSD FOR $99.

  • Can you set one of these up as an external SSD?

    • +1

yeah, but it sounds like a waste of money.

You might need to use a little bit of double sized foam tape as some drives are thinner than others.

      • What would you recommend for the money? Can't stand fat external HDDs.

        • I suppose it depends on your use case, but i'd be inclined to either:

          1) If desktop, run external sata cable and power.
          2) If laptop, install sata drives in a caddy
          2) Compare the performance of a 2.5" 7200RPM drive
          3) Or buy 2 usb3 drives for a similar price and 2 2.5" hdds.

I could be wrong, but it just seems a bit unecessary. Like putting a V8 in a hyundai getz

        • @Davo1111: I have a laptop w 128gb - my use case is something to store/edit photos from, store all my docs, and potentially to take games on the run with.

      • +2

I actually use one of these in a USB 3 enclosure as a portable Steam library so I can play games between my different computers. So actually I think it’s been worth the money making one an external drive. Awesome loading times!

    • +2

Yeah, just pick up one of these babies.

    • Yes, you can.

      Get this:
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-3-0-Full-Transparent-2-5-SAT…
      $10.

Note if you want a bit more speed you'll need something that supports UASP.

      Something like this:
      https://www.startech.com/au/HDD/Enclosures/USB-3-SATA-III-Ha…
      ($40).

UASP is a special protocol for making SATA via USB3.0 faster.

  • +2

Wow I payed half that for the 128gb version a long time ago. SSDs have gotten so much cheaper :(

    • +1

      That's a good thing!

      • +1

Definitely. Especially for people looking for one right now.
I have two 120GB+250GB SSDs in my PC RN. I wanna get a big one like this but I just don't want to spend so much on a drive you get what I'm saying? my drives are doing fine right now and while I WANT a new one I have absolutely no need for it as I have a 1TB hard drive to store all the games not on the SSD.

        • +1

Would be a good option to get more life out of an old laptop :)

      • Maybe they're a babyboomer, and instinctively want to leave things worse for future generations.

        • Nah I am the future generation. I'm just salty that this didn't happen when I was buying an SSD for my PC :P
Definitely good deal though, especially as I'm in WA and would get free shipping.
Now if only the same would happen with ram and GPUs then I could probably build my first new pc that doesn't have broken gumtree trash.

        • @Lolno234:

It did happen for you. Because I've paid much more for 60GB back in the day ;)
It's always getting cheaper in the long term. I bought a 1TB 970 Pro yesterday and it'll be cheaper for a similar model in a few years time.

RAM though, yep. I bought 32GB DDR3 for my PC in 2011 when it started going up. Paid about $280 and thought I was paying a huge markup. I can't believe where RAM has gone since then. I was planning on getting 64GB for my new PC but there's no chance of that happening.

        • @beatsntoons: When was back in the day though? I only bought my SSD last year or the year before which is why I'm surprised at how fast they are getting cheaper.

        • @Lolno234:

Nah I am the future generation. I'm just salty that this didn't happen when I was buying an SSD for my PC :P

          Haha I know.

I was building my own PCs in the 90s… everything is so cheap these days including RAM trust me :p

        • @beatsntoons:

I was planning on getting 64GB for my new PC but there's no chance of that happening.

What are you doing to need that much?

        • @RJK:

Everything I can to keep things from hitting Scratch ;)

    • Only 3 months ago, we thought $37 more was a bargain

That's crazy, only 3 months on something like this!

    • In 2011 I paid $135 for a 64gb SSD.

  • +6

Crucial MX500 is only $30 more and has far superior RW performance. Would suggest to hold off for that one instead.

    Benchmarks here:
    https://bit.ly/2NwZur3

    • +1

That's almost 1/3 of this SSD's cost. It's not 'only'

      • @Lolno234

to be fair, MX500 is A LOT faster than this one so the $30 justifies the price. Well, that and you get a teeny bit more storage space (500GB vs 480GB)

        • Yes MX500 for $30 more is a great deal but I imagine people buying a budget SSD would put it in a budget machine where something will bottleneck anyway so I don't see the point of comparing the two for people who wouldn't even tell the difference.

        • +1

@Lolno234: crucial mx 500 has been as low as $119 delivered. Which is what you are paying for this if you don't live in Vic or Wa

        • -3

@Chridim: But it's not now though? why are you telling us about a deal that's already ended? for all you know that deal won't come back for a few weeks or months or might not at all.

  • +1

I swapped this exact drive out in my PS4 Pro as internal hard drive and made the 1TB the external.
PS4 SSD performance is bottlenecked, but it's certainly got some good loading gains in certain games. I would certainly recommend a cheap and large(ish) SSD like this if anyone is doing a PS4 upgrade, as any performance above this read/write speed will be wasted on ps4.

    • I feel it's an unpopular opinion, but I agree. I did the same, and the difference is great. Virtually no pop-in, and I load into games a few seconds quicker than most others.

    • Yeah, exactly. I can vouch for the sped up loading times. I mainly play MHW and it's just more than twice as fast when I load from base into a mission.

      Here is an comparison video.

  • Could I use this in an iMac?

    • Yep. Clone your iMac drive to the SSD in an external drive enclosure/sata interface, then you have to pull the iMac apart to do it… Look at iFixit for reference. Won't be the easiest job

      • +1

Think the more recent 21.5” iMacs can’t be upgraded, but you can put this into a USB enclosure and boot from it (double side tape to the back of the iMac)

        • This is what I did to a brand new iMac (Using a USB-C case) and it works perfectly.

        • Mines just a tad older :)

      • Cheers, I’ve seen the guide; I guess it’s sort of lucky my iMac is out of warranty…

      • Hi mate, any idea if we can clone a window from a hdd to ssd? Any recommended software to do it? Thx a million!

    • -1
      • Can afford $3000000 for an iMac
      • iMac not upgradeable
      • Can't afford a more expensive, better performing SSD for hacked upgrade.
      • Ahh you’re one of those people.

  • +1

Still a good deal with postage? No idea, can anyone clarify that :3

    • MSY and some other stores sell it for $115.
Shipping will kill it pretty much.

  • Would this work on my Dell Inspiron 15?

  • No deal. $99 + $10.55 post is $109.55

        • @nerdyfred07: You mean ebay plus?

        • @SeriouslyJk: yeah. Only way to get the bargain price isn't it?

        • +1

@nerdyfred07: oh yeah I guess so

  • Thanks

Awesome deal, snatched one up immediately as I've been meaning to upgrade the 240GB SSD on my Windows 10 PC for a while as it only has 15GB left.

Now all I have to do is work out how to do an exact clone from my existing C: drive to the new one so I don't have to do a full reinstall etc.
Anyone know if the trial version of Partition Magic will do this? I had it licensed years ago but that will have expired :-(
Alternatively, does anyone know of a good free tool to do this?

    • Boot into a Linux live image and do a dd.

      • And now in English please? ;-)

        • +1

Okay… I found this for you, if it's easier: https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/feature/software/best-drive-cl…

BUT, if you want to try Linux out, it's worth the trouble. Are you familiar with Linux? It's an operating system, like Windows/macOS, and it's free. You may or may not want to read this, but I'll type it out if anyone else is interested.

          I recommend Xubuntu -> http://mirror.exetel.com.au/pub/ubuntu/xubuntu-releases/18.0…

If you ever want to try others out, I recommend Linux Mint, and maybe Manjaro. But that's for another time.

          Anyway, also download Rufus: https://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus-3.1p.exe

Get yourself an 8GB USB drive. You'll probably have one kicking around somewhere. Plug that in, run Rufus, and select the Xubuntu ISO you downloaded.

Once that's done, you'll have a bootable Linux USB drive. Great little thing to have.

Leave your USB drive plugged in, reboot your PC and select a boot device. Chances are you have to press F12 or F2 or ESC or something to get to the boot selection menu.

Select your USB drive, and wait till the OS loads. It'll ask you if you want to try it out or install. Choose the option to try it out.

You'll finally get into to the desktop. And now… well… if you've come this far, great. Let me know and I'll continue. I've done this so often, it's second nature, and I've never had to put it into words before. I was a technical writer by trade, and the way I'm typing this out goes against everything I was trained in. No screenshots, no concise steps, etc. Apologies for that. But I'll continue if anyone else wants to know more.

        • @flaminglemon:
I know what Linux is - it was just your cryptic one line comment about doing a 'dd' I didn't understand :-)

Thanks for all the info (you're obviously a real Linux enthusiast) but I'm a Microsoft developer by trade so I honestly have no use for Linux. I'm not anti-Linux in any way (I used Unix on and off for years in my early career), it's just nearly all my many years experience is in Windows and it's development environment so, for better or worse, that's my world.

    • use symantec ghost, partition to partition. Not sure after you change hard disk, windows 10 still let you in.

  • the new king of high-speed portable drives

  • But is there a 1TB model with the same price ratio!?
