ALDI Camping Equipment - Canvas Tents, Swags, etc - Quality?

Hi guys,

Aldi has some very nicely priced camping equipment coming up.

E.g. - https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-1-s…

and

https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-1-s…

$99 for a king swag is a steal. I paid $200+ for mine.

Can anyone comment on the (expected) quality of these items?

  • Aldi always stocks their own brands, so you might see if you can track down what products they're rebranding and finding reviews for those.

    • Yep I've found this on things like hiking tents… Same item, different label.

  • I purchased mtb shorts from them once. They lasted longer than my troy lee designs which are meant to be the best. It says something about their quality. My friends have purchased their tents. No complaints.

  • You get what you pay for, but on the whole I’ve been happy enough with aldi products. Got plenty over the years, and while I know they aren’t too quality (built down to price) they do the job at the expected level.

Only thing I probably regret is some of the tools, the steel tends to be a bit soft, but for a rarely used tool this isn’t a major problem.

  • I've had a good run with Aldi camping gear. Two hiking tents are going well and were much cheaper compared to the identical, branded models. I have a lot of thermal clothing and hiking socks that has been around the world. Just bought a second, larger hiking chair and it's great! I'm a fan. There will always be defects requiring returns but I'd say this gear is probably legit.

  • OK, maybe I'll give it a go. Truth is that swag wouldn't get a huge amount of use, maybe 3 times per year during summer. You can pay $800 for a top notch one of these!

  • +1

I know this thread is a little old now, but this may help someone else:
Generally speaking, Aldi's quality on camping and related gear is usually good. If you're planning to camp more than once per year, it's probably worth spending the extra money on brand name gear that will last you many years (not always the case however).

I've bought basically everything camping related from Aldi except the tents and swags (chairs, solar panels, tarps, accessories, etc etc), and have usually been quite happy with the quality, especially at the price point.

As someone else said, you get what you pay for, so if it's really cheap, it's still going to be crap, but you CAN BE often pleasantly surprised with the quality of Aldi gear.

Just remember that Aldi have a really good returns policy, so don't be afraid to take it back if you're not happy.
