I use a VPN for privacy and work reasons… this kind of thing bugs me - can't you just block ip addresses from known spam networks, if this is what you are scared of?

LOL at blocking "known spam networks", since most spam comes from Proxies and behind VPNs.
Despite what some people might think, spammers usually don't use their real IP Address. Funny that [wink]
We block known SPAM networks, anonoymous proxies, and manually add IP's in after we ban user spam BUT…they still get through and SPAM the site.
Instead of critisizing our policies, you can simply put in a Talk with a Mod request and perhaps Scott will whitelist your IP address.

Yes. Unfortunately the "known" spam network changes everyday. We are putting up RDNS based spam filter (hopefully next week, when I can get time off from work), but they don't catch everything. The 5-comments per day is more like throttling.
It is also disabled for frequent users, i.e. ones with 100+ comments. Just a few more to go :)
Why should it matter? The website is OzBargain, not InternationalBargain. The current setup is working quite well, large amounts of effort and IP filtering so a select few people can hide behind VPNs seems a waste.
