Digital Camera or iPhoneX

I need to take high quality pictures like those taken by an iPhone X, but I can’t afford the price of an iPhone X. As I run my own business and need to have high quality photos for social media marketing and for my website, what alternatives are there that will achieve the same results as an iPhone X but cost less?

Based on gsmareba & other reference points the camera would need min specs:

12 MP, f/1.8, 28mm, 1.22µm, OIS, PDAF
12 MP, f/2.4, 52mm, 1.0µm, OIS, PDAF, 2x optical zoom

dual-12MP (wide+telephoto)

I’m not sure what exactly you’re looking for? If you’re wanting the depth of field effect you can get the real thing with an entry-level SLR and a second-hand 50mm lens.

    • It’s for taking photos of foliage, flowers, interior decorating, outdoor decorating.

Needs to produce great photos in all lighting conditions and weather events.

Needs to efficiently share on social media

Ideally allow for watermarks on photos that don’t distort the image but ensures branding is on every photo so that brand recognition is achieved when photos are shared

  • I'd go an iPhone X for sure but that's just me

  • https://www.dxomark.com/category/mobile-reviews/ - go for the Huawei P20 Pro, best camera smartphone out there as shown on DXOMark and personal opinion, regularly on sale for ~$900 when 20% off Allphones ect or you can get an Entry DSLR such as the D3400 as said above.

The best possible camera is the one you always have on you. Therefore, iphone

  • IPhone X photos are ok but this is a really low benchmark - I have one.

This was being given away for free a little while back - unfortunately now costs about $13

That’s probably the most concise entry level photography resource I’ve seen. You can get an entry level Nikon or Canon camera plus a Godox bounce flash TT685C (for canon) or TT685N (for Nikon) all for under $550.

Edit: if it’s not practical to be carrying around a DSLR for you then maybe a iPhone 7plus might work - I can’t tell the difference between its photos and the iPhone X.

Not sure what exactly you are trying to achieve.

Do you need a camera that will quickly push up to social? What is your current phone? Whats more important video or stills, will your be doing anything else with the photos/videos - print/website/video editing?

    If were me,

Get a mirrorless with a lens, ensure that you can wifi/bluetooth to your phone to have the quick ability to share, use snapseed/lightroom mobile/vsco for quick editing (plenty of watermark apps out there) then off you go.

I lean towards Fuji cameras just because i own that kit already, so potentially, the newer x-t100 with the ket lens (15mm to 45mm) could be a good option for NEW, video not AS strong. Or find a good x-series 2nd hand camera with wifi/bluetooth and you'll be pretty set. Or even the sony compacts rx100s are pretty darn good too.

    • I’m a florist and event designer who needs to take photos of my work for advertising purposes.

Still photos are definitely far more important than videos.

Regards phone I’m currently using iPhone 5S, but probably need to upgrade that as it’s starting to malfunction.

Then you need to reassess your phone options before going any further, since you need a replacement anyway.

The best thing to do would be to look at prices to replace your phone (whether that is BYO SIM Plan + outright phone or a straightforward 24M contract with phone) and assess how much that will cost you over 24 months. Then look at how much the same plan will cost with an iPhone X, and calculate the difference.

The difference between the cost of the iPhone X and the cost of your 'expected phone plan' will be the budget within which you would need to find a digital camera before it becomes more costly. From there, you can take that budget, research what you could purchase, and compare the quality of that standalone digital camera with the quality of the iPhone X's camera. The digital camera will likely still be the better option, but also keep in mind the other benefits of the iPhone X over the phone you would have otherwise chosen (better screen, faster speeds etc) as well as the convenience of simply snapping a photo and directly uploading via your phone as opposed to using an intermediate device like a computer.

Lastly, the new iPhones will be coming out in a month. The latest one will cost the same as the iPhone X and will almost certainly have a better camera. So if you decide that the iPhone X is the way to go (or is only fractionally worse than the digital camera + lesser phone option) then you should wait out the month and get the improved iPhone.

  • The tiny cameras in phones are always going to be crap, you will get a lot better shots with a DSLR or Mirrorless camera (and a lot of them have wifi to send the photos to your phone).

  • "Based on gsmareba & other reference points the camera would need min specs"

    Those specs where only used in Iphone 6 7 7plus SE 8 8plus Ipad pro 9.7 10.5 12.9

Sensor is smaller than 1/2.9 making it 2/3 smaller than my security cameras sensor.

If that's all your after just buy a point and shoot for a couple hundred and you'll be miles ahead.

Curious as to why you are using iPhone X as a standard for image quality. What iPhone X picture have you see that made you go "Wow I need that!"? Having a frame of reference might help.

  • nokia 808

  • Why not get this?

    https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-camer…

High quality images with optical zoom that can be transferred to your phone via wifi easily. Compact and easy to carry.
