I logged onto Westpac online banking this morning and happened to notice this transaction:
DEBIT CARD PURCHASE Amazon Prime Amzn.com/bil USA USD 12.99 incl. Westpac Foreign Transaction Fee AUD $0.53
Transaction date 21 Aug 2018
Amount -$18.33
(Note: I have a debit Mastercard linked to my bank account with Westpac…)
Long story short, I knew full well I hadn't bought anything from Amazon.com.au on that date. Via their website, I got Amazon.com.au to call me to dispute the transaction. The bloke I spoke to was helpful. He pointed out that it appears the U.S. site has charged me for Prime membership. He has told me he will contact the U.S. site on my behalf, cancel the Prime membership there and get them to issue me with a refund.
Background: I had an account on the U.S. site for many years, which I used very occasionally. I recently switched over to the Oz site using my old membership details and started a trial Prime membership back in July. I cancelled Prime the day before I was going to be charged for a new month.
For anyone that did what I did, switching over their old membership from the U.S. site to the AU site and trialling Prime membership, please check on Amazon.com that you aren't going to be charged for Prime U.S. membership.
While I'll receive a refund, I'm guessing I'll still be out of pocket for the currency conversion fees. Bugger all, but I'm guessing I'll have to wear it.
I had US Amazon Prime as well. When I got the Australian Amazon prime I forgot to cancel the US one. My credit card was charged so I asked them to cancel my US Prime account and refund the amount. No problems at all.
