Noise Cancelling headphones

Heyas,

So my bro just busted my pair of Logitech noise cancelling headphones and they're no longer available. The Logi pair wasn't particularly fancy, but it served my needs well so I'm looking for something of similar quality in terms of performance (and ideally price point!)

I've tried noise isolation headphones (eg: ear buds), but find they're not as effective, especially for flying.

Anyone got any leads on a good pair of active noise cancellation headphones around $100 - $150?

  • I got these last week, and they are pretty damn good.

    Not active tho.

  • I would go for these because they are the best for value.

I personally own them myself and am really pleased with their performance. You can check customer reviews through the head-fi forum.

  • Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I'm definitely more interested in the big clunky over the head active ones.

I've got a pair of Logi UE 700 and they're awesome for car/train, but don't feel that it's as effective on a plane. Maybe my ear canals are just a weird shape or sumn ;)

  • what about Sennheisers have your tried them
i have a pair and they are fantastic

Have you thought about re-shelling your logitech UE700's into full custom shells?

yes we (www.uniquemelody.com.au) do it along with a few more companies in the US.

check out head-fi.org for more info.

    • Boo company blantantly advertising.

But if you are going to consider doing this, consider the costs it's about $200-$250 to get the custom shell, plus the $200ish to get your ears imprinted to get the cutom shells, so all up about $400-$500.

And honestly UE700s aren't even worth it to get reshelled, the sound quality improvement you'd get from the re-shelling wouldn't even compete with the sound from universals that can be had for $400-$500 (Westone 3, Westone UM3X, Westone 4, Shure SE535), or if you're poor Ultimate Ears Triple Fi 10 for $200-$250 ish if you can find it.

  • In this case we're here to advise, rather than advertise, but I understand your apprehension.

Your costing is off, a custom re-shell runs about $200 plus ear impressions which are about $30-60 which results in a $230-260 full custom.

It is definitely worth getting the UE700's re-shelled as the OP is after improvements in noise cancelling and isolation and not a sound quality improvement (which he will still get with a re-shell though he has already stated that he likes the sound)

A full shell custom will isolate far better than any W3, UM3X, W4, SE535 of TF10.

For $230-60, it will be a far superior solution for the OP than any active noise canceling headphone out there.

    • I have no idea where you can get ear impressions for $30-60….. (other than those DIY kits which are really dodgy)
Had a friend who got it done professionally and it cost him $150 cause he's family friends with the guy said it was normally around the $200 mark.

Although it might give him the best noise isolation, the sound quality would suck and definately won't be worth even the $230-260 that you're quoting, there are way better options out there for $250-300 instead of re-shelling UE700s

      • We have a list of over 90 audiologists in Australia that work for us who provide us and the general public (majority market is the hearing impaired) with ear impressions for that price. Give us a capital city and we'll give you a contact.

It will give him the best noise isolation and be superior in comfort and noise canceling offerings, be they active or passive. The sound quality will certainly not suck, unsure what you are basing your assumptions off.

@Random Ninja, no problem, just opening your eyes to a different and perhaps unheard of solution. Custom in ear monitors are progressing heavily into the frequent flyers and aviation market for pilot use (non commercial jet) so I thought I might bring it up.

  • UniqueMelodyAus: appreciate the offer, but I was happy with $70 Logi noise cancellers, I'm definitely not your target market.

Trance: Yep, I was considering the Bose QC 15, but the price tag is such a beat! Esp when AU RRP is $200 more than US MSRP!

    • IMO Bose = Buy Other Sound Equipment (Well they are good but usually there's something better at the same price, same goes for Sennheiser in the mid range market)

Have you looked at reviews on Audio Technica products (I'd probably say you'd be looking at the ATH-ANC7b at $240).

      edit:
oh whoops you have a limit of $150
Just thought you'd might like some suggestions on other products out there.

  • Audio Technica ATH-CKS50($69) or Vsonic R02Pro2 ($89)

    both are under $100
    which one should i buy?

  • The audio technica ones look like a good deal at that price. I was comparing them with other brands on this site ( http://sound-cancelling-headphones.blogspot.com ) and though they might be the way to go for me at least. As far as in ear systems go has anyone tried the Klipsch range ?

  • I ended up getting the Creative Aurvana X-fi noise cancellers for $99, supposedly $363 O_o

    http://au.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=437&sub…

Arrived today so only played with it for about a half hour. The noise cancelling has an audible hiss/white noise even when music is playing… haven't tested in a noisy environment yet so lets hope it does a good job in that area.

The CMSS-3D function is pretty awesome, definitely sounds more natural with that function on. Couldn't tell any difference with the X-Fi Crystallizer function on, but I'm not an audiophile shrugs

For $99 it's a pretty sweet deal, tho some ppl on Amazon have reported the headband being pretty poorly designed and resulting in breakages.
