Which NBN provider?

I am currently with My Republic 100/40 paying $59.99 a month for the past 1 year. I now have received an email from MR asking me to choose a new plan which is $69.99 a month for a 50/20 connection or $84.99 for the same current speed.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative? TIA

  • It would be difficult to find something cheaper than MyRepublic without sacrificing some other kind of variable (uptime / customer service / CVC allocation). MyRepublic is considered 'budget tier' but if they have to raise prices, that just means the $59,99 a month for 100mbps model is no longer sustainable due to price chances in the NBN wholesale market.

Voda charges $79 a month but only for existing Mobile subscribers

    Kogan charges $85.90 a month

TPG and Amaysim $90 a month

    https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/nbn

    Telecube $85 a month

MyRepublic would probably remain the cheapest, and will stay the cheapest for quite some time if they can undercut someone small like Kogan.

One question you have to ask yourself is if you are actually getting what you paid for. There's no point buying a 100mbps plan if you're

    a) using FTTN or HFC and cannot technically achieve 100mbps speeds
    b) the network is badly congested at peak time and you rarely hit top speeds

      a) using FTTN or HFC and cannot technically achieve 100mbps speeds

I am on HFC and get 100mbps speeds. What's the technical limitation?

      • I grant that there a couple of ways to interpret it but if you read a) again and put the emphasis on the "and", I think you will get the intended meaning. You are on HFC but you can achieve 100Mbps speeds so a) doesn't apply to you.

      • Are you with AussieBB too?
I typically hit the low-mid 90's internationally, on my HFC.

        • It was on AussieBB yes.

I had a one month free offer so I chose the highest speed and unlimited data for the free month.

It was too expensive and I didn't really save that much time so I downgraded the speed. I didn't "need" unlimited data so downgraded that too in exchange for a much more reasonable monthly fee.

  • Don't get the cheapest. I've been through a few now. Telecube are terrible, will probably go under soon, massive price hikes recently, performance was terrible (I had days of no connection on fttp, so can't even blame it on fttn), no phone support, and email support is extremely slow. Mungi have great support, have stopped 100/40 now, and speeds were a bit average lately for me. Have now gone back to Aussie, who I had initially. Best service, best support. Wish I had never left, but needed more data, now they have unlimited plans.

    Highly recommend them.

It's interesting to hear people having trouble with Telecube. While the price increase got on my nerves, my service has been great. Theres been one outage in about 6 months (that I noticed and effected me) and my speed test results are pretty spot on with my 100/40 plan. I constantly get 90/35 results on multiple speed test sites, even my PS4 speed test maxes out. I hope they stick around and manage to lower their pries again. $85 for 100/40 and 1TB of data which is more than enough for me, and I'm quite happy with the service. I do have FTTP also.

      • I had a number of times where I had no internet. Authentication issues. Would have the Mrs and son complaining when I got home. Then have to find the laptop, go into the garage, plug it into ntd, setup a stupid ppoe connection (or try to at least). Then call telecube, then you have to email as they don't answer calls. By the time they reply 24 hours later it's already magically working again.

In contrast, when I was getting 5Mbs with abb, they answered the phone, worked through it with me, and we found my almost new router was the issue. Replaced and back to normal. They also have a local pop, whereas telecube said they were getting a Brisbane pop, but it never happened while I was with them.

        • Good point about the help desk, Email only is ridiculous, especially if your internet goes out!
During my downtime I just used my phones data to check their announcements page to see that there was an outage.

I think the benefit of a lot of providers these days, is that they have no lock in contract. Sure its an inconvenience, that you have to shop around for a reliable utility service, but I guess thats what we have to put up with for the time being.

Although what you said, it's still a +1 for Telecube for me, with the issues you mentioned, hopefully they take note and can only get better.

I just tried a speed test at 1810hrs and got 92.5 down and 33.4 up. I'm happy.

  • You can only choose two out of fast, cheap, reliable.

    Another vote for ABB.

      But not cheap

      • Fast and reliable though. ;)

You can’t have all three! :D

        • Sure you can't, that's why it has to be value for money. That's based on user requirements. If OP don't play games, can wait few min till page load up or don't watch high res porn then its over price ;)

  • If you are fine with 50/20 speed i can definitely recommend what i did and that is cancel MR and switch to Mungi 50/20 for $64.95 a month.
Ive been with them for a few weeks now and have had no issues with speed or Ping issues, gaming have been solid.

    • Sounds good. $5 per month cheaper compared to MR. What's your gaming and YouTube stream like during peak and off peak hours? I casually play ps4 games, YouTube and watching Amazon Prime. 50/10 should be enough for me.

      • Since i was connected on the 11th august there was only two small issues
1st was kinda big but was an easy fix, the DNS that i was set to automatic wouldn't allow me to load Netflix prime video spotify and a few others, after contacting them which was very quick i found out it was the DNS So i have 1.1.1.1 set in my router so that everything connected uses the DNS i set and everything worked great after.

2nd was less than 1 minute worth of 400+ ping two days ago at 4 am in the morning lol i still won the Rocket league match so it's all good haha.

I watch netflix and twitch everyday and have no issues also.

        I am connected with FTTP

        • Are you able to do a test during peak hours? Most people are probably at work at 11am on weekday. Thanks man.

        • @HandsomeMonkey: that test was done as i was typeing that comment at 9pm that night.

        • @Axelstrife:

Thanks man. I'll sign up with them now. Cheers
