21

Hey,
I noticed this when signing up for google apps today, you can elect google to buy a domain on your behalf.

The domain appears to be from google but it's not, google just auto configure it to work with google apps it's
actually hosted through GoDaddy and if you naviagte to

Domain Management (In gApps) > Domain Settings > Domain Names > Advanced DNS settings

It takes you to the GoDaddy control panel.

Just thought people may find this helpful.

  • Prefer Internet.bs and namecheap.com myself… Both cheaper.

    • yea i don't usually use godaddy (except for gApps) either but for people that do i thought it was worth while.

  • So the registrar actually has Google listed as the domain registrant? That's not a good thing.

No, it uses GoDaddy's own proxy in the Whois

10 bucks is the standard pricing

$10 for a domain without private whois, complete the checkout and u will see what i mean

      • Fine, go to name.com and get a .com for 9.99 and use freewhois coupon for free private whois.
Or try internet.bs or namecheap as pobman suggested.

They are all cheaper and with private whois, so how is this godaddy offer a deal?? (and oh, name.com does offer free googleapps setup as well, not that you need it)

  • does anyone know of someone who can make a website for me cheaply?

    • depends how cheap you mean
email [email protected] with what you're after

  • Sorry for the newbie question. So what I have to do is to click:

I want to buy a domain name

Google Apps is free, but a domain name costs $10/year.

And the registration will be under GoDaddy's?

And what's the main benefit for getting private registration? I'm guessing so people won't find your detail? Thanks.

      1. You can sign up googleapps with any domain that you own. You don't need to sign up through godaddy.
      2. Google is not a registrar.
      3. Private whois is a mail forwarding service that registrars provide, so that only their contact details are listed rather than yours.

I don't know why people are negging you for providing useful information.

        I'll try balance it out.

The reason that you use Private Registration is because WhoIs (domain registrant) details are public. Whatever email address that you use for your (public) domain registration will get absolutely spammed to death.

        • Ok thanks for the explanation. I thought registration will be a one time off instead of yearly subscription? Once registered privately people will find the registrar's email instead of ours? Thanks.

        • The Registration AND the Privacy are both yearly. You have to keep paying for privacy or they will make the details public again.

This deal is for one year only. Thereafter the price reverts to normal ($12 or so per annum?). This deal isn't really a particularly good price, so don't get too excited… the only reason that these companies offer cheap domain deals is because teh majority of people renew each year without comparing prices (same reason your car insurance is cheap first year).

Since you own the domnain you can transfer it any time or re-register with another company next time. Sometimes there are deals where you can get a year free if you renew elsewhere.

        • I'm not saying this is the norm, but I've had two domains registered for about 3 years now with public details available, and have not had a problem with SPAM.

  • Ok thanks for the explanation. Is the private whois a one time off or a yearly subscription? Thanks.

    • It was a per year fee last I checked.

    • yes per year
