Galaxy Mobiles Showing Different Download Speeds

Hi,

I have currently have FTTB via TPG, so my download speed is ~appx 90Mbps when I run various Speed Tests on my PC (LAN Cable Connected)

2 Questions:

A.) Using my Galaxy S9 and running the same speed test (Google Speed Test - 1st result), I get 22Mbps on Galaxy S9
This is via 5Ghz Band Wigi…why the hell would it drop almost 80% from LAN?

B.) 48Mbps on Galaxy A8, this is on my partners' phone and we replicated our Connection settings, sitting same distance from Router

Are you selecting the same speed test server for every device?
Are you running the speed test's only on a single device at a time?
You don't have any downloads on the mobile phones when doing the speed test's?

I'm assuming your PC is using wired Ethernet.

If everything is right your speed should be almost identical than the PC unless somehow your wifi is the worst ive ever heard of.

Hang on, are we comparing 4g to a wired fiber connection?

    • …………..I think OP is :|

EDIT: Ironically we are on a FTTN 50Mbps NBN at home, yet in my bedroom connected to the Telstra 4G network I get 220Mbps on my Galaxy S8. Never doing that again, it downloaded 330Mb for the test.

    • no..wifi only

no, it literally doesn't say that anywhere in the post.

so connected via 5G, yada yada

OP said 5G. Do you know what 5G is?

          5G = 5GHZ wifi network.

@Axelstrife: Yes sorry 5Ghz…(I mean 5G not out yet anyway)

  • Just because they are both "samsung galaxy phones" don't expect them to work the same with speeds. It doesn't work like that, and I do not know of any certain way to check these sort of things even if you have all the phone specs etc.
I know in days past, with phone cellular reception, the Telstra "blue tick" models were an indicator of great reception. When I was living in poor reception location, I checked the telstra blue tick models (but didn't buy from Telstra, cos they are overpriced, just bought same model)

Just from googling it there looks like there is some problem using wifi on the s9. Obviously getting 80% slower what you usually get isn't normal.

  • Another long shot, as I believe bluetooth should only affect 2.4Ghz not 5Ghz, but do the speeds improve if you turn bluetooth off? I thought it might be worth a try at least.

    • We both had Bluetooth and NFC off.
Checked our Connections menu and it was replicated - even Download Booster off.

Connected to the Huawei Wifi via 5Ghz band.
Sat in lounge room (6m) from the Router - I got 22-24 Mbps consistent, she got 44-48 Mbps
We walked to the PC, placed our mobiles 30cm from router, same result.

I did do a Google Search on slow Wifi Speeds on S9, there are many articles but i'm still rather shocked that a flagship phone lacks this.
Anyone else with an S9 here???
