And still was one of the biggest posters prior to joining CR.
Agreed.
I'd say in TA's case it is bit of both these days, and nothing wrong with that. You really can't get around it once a business relationship is established. Cashrewards are after all in business to make a profit and know the value of having prominent exposure here. Probably one of the reasons they offered TA a position in the first place. Good luck to them.
From the title of this thread I took it that you are questioning whether affiliates are genuinely interested in helping other OzB'ers, or just in lining their own pockets. Is this what you are asking?
Why does it matter?
Cash back entity affiliates don't owe me anything. If they promote a good deal I'll use their service and upvote them. If they don't I'll just ignore them.
If they find a good business model to make money then good on them!
Why does it matter?
It matters a bit. Otherwise, members could spam the deal section with different affiliate links for different stores.
Except for the part where OzBargain automatically removes affiliate links.
You get paid for shopping as normal, all for the price of a couple of seconds to click out through the cashback site. How is that not saving members money?
If it's not the best price neg the deal.
Ultimately, as buyers, we decide if we want to use their cashback deals, and we also vote accordingly. This in turn incentivises the affiliate to work constantly to find the best deals. It's a win-win situation.
Disclaimer: I'm am not affiliated to any affiliate.
Cashback affiliates interests may be aligned with members because the more people buy the more commissions they make. They may not be aligned if the cashback affiliate makes a percentage of the sale or other reasons.
could they promote "bargains" that we do not need?
A bargain is only a bargain if and only if you need that item in the near future.
That's got nothing to do with cash back affiliates at all, sure, they may increase the exposure, but it's ultimately your decision whether to purchase or not. You're a funny one, are you interested in helping members save? Or trying to benefit
membersyourself?
Flogging a PS4 Pro on OzBargain for $479 - posted in OzB classifieds by Retailrecommprice
Original PS4 Pro Deal two weeks earlier for $379To be honest I think when money comes into the equation everybody is compromised in one way or the other, even to a small degree.
That includes the thousands of OzBargain members including myself who post with referral links. Reps of businesses and cashrewards sites who also post here are no different.
I think that's one reason why OzBargain itself doesn't have any commercial partners or sponsors.

They choose not to, or it compromises their integrity to be completely free from side-benefits of posting certain deals.
Ad-revenue from visitors is apparently enough for OzBargain.
Also if you visit OzBargain as a guest, there's random affiliate links for certain websites that benefit OzBargain too.
Take tightarse for example, rep for CashRewards. He is one of the biggest deal posters here on OzBargain.
