So I have 25000 points that are due to expire next month. I don't plan to travel and I don't have anything that I can link to my account to constantly stream points in so they are active. Apart from letting them expire, any other ideas what I can use 25000 points for - I looked for one night in a hotel and it costs over 70000 points.
Qantas Frequent Flyer points about to expire
Comments
Wow thank you I didn't even know this existed.
Will have browse now !I should say be wary of expiry dates before points credited.
Just be aware if the item goes "out of stock" or can't be delivered, it could cause issues if the expiry date is quite short.
Order some wines through qantas epicure.
Some of the wines come with bonus points so you can just keep the whole points thing going! ;)
You miss the point. You have to have ACTIVITY on the account, so spending is activity. So you dont need to get the bonus points to keep account alive (Yes bonus points are nice but not necessary)
Grab a Woolworths "Everyday Rewards Card" (for FREE), and link it to your Qantas Frequent Flyer Number.
Then, just make sure you spend at least $31 at Woolworths (before the points expire) to reset your points expiry date.
I think these days they only credit once the points get up to 2000, and that credits 800 points (I didn't look it up).
Also, they only credit the points quarterly, so no good if expiry coming soon
Good point; I didn't think of that. I never really track the time taken for supermarket points that religiously.
Also, you dont need a constant stream… you just need one point earnt every 18 months to keep the points.
You can do that by simply signing up for Woolies Everyday Rewards, link it to Qantas, make a shop of $31 (on items you would normally purchase) and then 1 point gets transferred to Qantas and your points are safe for another 18 months.
Also, one way domestic economy flights are between 6000 to 12000 points, so you could go on a return weekend away somewhere as well.
So is it "great minds think alike", or "fools never differ" ???
Maybe we are fools to keep chasing these points.
On the other hand, I am taking the family on a round the world trip in two weeks - all on points. So, it is worth it being a fool chasing points. :)
Out of curiosity, what is your itinerary? I have trouble finding flights across the Pacific to make this kind of redemption.
It is definitely NOT foolish to rack up the points by just intelligently spending your money.
Although, I have come across some people who will spend out of all proportion to the points they receive in return.
I have also had quite a few nice journeys thanks to points ;-)
MEL - SGN (Cathay)
SGN - BAH (Cathay)
BAH - FCO (BA)
FCO - Venice - Vienna - Bratislava by train
BTS - BVA (RyanAir - not on points)
CDG - JFK (BA)
NYC - WAS (Amtrak)
WAS - RDU (Car Hire)
RDU - LAX (AA)
LAX - MEL (QF)This itinerary was booked through Frequent Flyer Assist service who found availability for 4 people on all the flights for approximate dates we wanted. We were also flexible with dates +/- 2 weeks in either direction as well as flexible with locations - like land/depart anywhere in Europe.
@MrHyde:
Thanks.
Sounds like getting the call centre to help is worth it for this kind of more complicated itinerary.I have trouble finding flights across the Pacific to make this kind of redemption.
Higher status will help, but you can look at direct flights between BNE / MEL / SYD and DFW / LAX / SFO on Qantas.
You can also look at going via HKG with Cathay, TYO (HND / NRT) with Japan Airlines, or Jetstar etc.
You can even look at going via HNL or AKL using combinations of different airlines.@mskeggs:
The Frequent Flyer Assist service (https://frequentflyer.com.au/award-flight-assist/) does all the hard work. They provide a list of instructions at the end that you read out to the call centre staff and all flights get booked. It cost me $225 for the above itinerary, but definitely worth it as it would have taken me days and days to put it together. They put it together in about 8 hours from payment to email with options.@MrHyde: Wow, thanks for this info. Definitely is a great option.
Out of curiosity, how many total points did you burn doing this (looks like all QFF points)? This is a classic One world Award. Cost be almost 1.2 million for 4 ppl all in Business class. Economy would have been 600k
@MrHyde: Wow, 1.2 mil QFF is insane. Would've taken you a while to rack that up! Well done.
Can you transfer them to a family member / partner ?
Check the T&Cs - I think that does not change the expiry.
The proposal was to transfer the 25000 points to some one else's account who is more active. I've done that with my wife and children's points before. They then become mine and don't expire (as long as my account is still active).
Family transfers into the account will not change the expiry date of the account.
Sign up to Qantas Assure. Points posted rather quickly and it is a steady stream of (very little) points too.
Monitor your account - If points do not post in time, purchase something from the Qantas store.that is what I was going to post. I think this is the best way to ensure your points don't expire because you are adding to them every day. Even after the trial period, as long as you keep the steps going, the points keep ticking over just at a much lower rate. You just need to make sure you adjust to the steps you have taken during the day before midnight.
I just checked my Qantas statement, and the points for Qantas assure posted roughly 2-4 days after the day the points were earned.
The number of points depends on how many steps you do, but here is an excerpt from my statement.
