24" or 27" Monitor? I Currently Have a 21.5" and Am Considering Upgrading

Hello Ozbargain family!

I currently have a viewsonic 21.5 Monitor and am considering upgrading to a larger screen. I have a rough $200 current budget, so I was considering buying a 24" monitor.

I usually play FPS these days, mostly rainbow six siege and a bit of Overwatch.

Wondering whether people feel that is a big difference between the 24" vs 27" monitors for user experience? Any suggestions for what a good budget gaming monitor would be?

Thank you in advance,
OP

  • With $200 you can't afford a QHD monitor (1440p) so you have to go with 1080p. Most people say that the maximum size for a 1080p monitor is 24" as 27" would look bad.

  • I'd go 27. It's large enough to have 2 word documents side by side and read both without issues.

Also you get 1440p monitors at that size which makes everything more crisp.

If you're staying with 1080p stay with 24".

    Go big or go home.

  • FPS , can your system push over 100 fps for 144hz 24" FHD @ $299 with amd freesync ?

If your system is weak or has nvidia gpu, just go for 29" ultrawide 21:9 1080p

27" is the sweet spot. You wont go back to 21 or 24, ever.

  • I have both, got the 27" from the Dell factory outlet last year (have a look there for stuff within your budget). Personally there is not 'that' much difference, size wise between the two but If I could get another 27" at the same rice I probably would.

I'd love to buy a monitor with rice too.

      • Can never have too much rice! :(

They all laughed when I started to hoard rice, it'll be worth something some day I tried to tell them. Well who's laughing now?

  • I don't find 24's to look all that big anymore (imagine if I'd said that 15 years ago!). I have a 32" 2k monitor at home and the resolution is pretty good. 27"at 1080 is a little lower dpi, but I still think it would look fine.

If were me then I'd save up a bit and go for a 32 2k, but I am a bit biased. The beauty of the larger 2k monitor is that you can pin browsers/documents/etc side by side and they still look good - so it's kind of like having two monitors.

  • 27" IPS, I honestly don't know how we ever lived with anything smaller, my first PC's screen was a 17" square :/

  • AOC AGON G2590VXQ 24.5" really good budget monitor in your price range
