Update:

  • 13 Sep: The role has been filled.

  • 30 Aug: Application is closed at the moment while moderators sort out the current applicants. Please also see this comment — please do not send in applicant if you do not meet the requirement.

  • 27 Aug: This was originally posted in the Power Users forum and moved to Site Discussions. Posting date/time reset so it can appear on New Discussions page.

At OzBargain we are currently looking for a junior editor / moderator to join our team. We are looking at mostly a full-time role. However as we run on flexible time (the websites run 24x7), we will also look at applicants that can only work at part-time capacity (i.e. 4-5 hours a day for 5 days a week).

Role
  • Review deals & competitions posted by the community members across our platforms (OzBargain, ChoiceCheapies, CheapCheapLah). Make appropriate editing or moderation to ensure they stay within the guidelines.
  • Work with existing moderation team to update & fine tune the guidelines.
  • Resolve issues reported by the community members.
Requirements
  • OzBargain account in good standing
  • Good understanding on how OzBargain works
  • Good knowledge on brands, products and retailers/merchants in both Australia and overseas
  • Good communication and interpersonal skill when relating to pseudo-anonymous users online
  • Good command of written English
  • Personality: disciplined, result-driven, attention to details

To apply, please PM me (scotty) or email [email protected] stating why you are the best candidate for this job.

FAQs

Q: What's the remuneration like?

A: Please note that it's a junior position with very little qualification/experience requirement. As a guide, we'll be offering $50k pa + super for a full time junior editor role.

  • Less, if part-time.
  • More, if the applicant can bring more on the table (and can convince us that we want to pay for that).

I think you should give a bit more detail about the working condition, scotty.

    • Is this a work from home job or an office job?
    • What are the working days and hours? Is there a work roster? (You mentioned 24x7 flexible time, so do you expect somebody to work the graveyard shift?)
    • If work from home, what equipment does the new mod need to supply? How will the new mod keep in touch with the rest of the team? Do you expect the new mod to work autonomously, or keep in constant contact with the team?
    • If an office job, where is the office?
    • If a mix of home & office, how often do you require the new mod to come in?
    • Any training provided?
    • +3

These aren't usually in the job ads :) However to answer your questions:

Is this a work from home job or an office job?

We don't have an office. I don't force our staffs to work from home either. Some might prefer library or local cafe.

What are the working days and hours? Is there a work roster? (You mentioned 24x7 flexible time, so do you expect somebody to work the graveyard shift?)

People sort of worked out their own preferred hours (some are early people, some sleep late), but we do try to cover each other. Weekends are usually under-staffed but I am fine having reports unresolved for up to 24 hours. When I said flexible yes it's flexible, as long as people are disciplined, self motivated and got the job done.

If work from home, what equipment does the new mod need to supply? How will the new mod keep in touch with the rest of the team? Do you expect the new mod to work autonomously, or keep in constant contact with the team?

Staffs are equipped with a ThinkPad :) All staffs communicate via Slack, email and sometimes Hangout. Everyone works autonomously, but usually we get issues resolved by communicating (often via Slack).

If an office job, where is the office?

Most likely your home :) So this job is basically opened to Australia-wide. Otherwise we are on Slack almost all the time.

If a mix of home & office, how often do you require the new mod to come in?

Logging onto Slack as soon as you are online.

      Any training provided?

Yeah. Basically all the moderation tools, getting familiar with guidelines & processes, etc.

Would be a good job for a stay at home mum or something too :) someone like gnv9 who's always online and contributing

    Get paid to Ozbargain 😍

  • +10

As a guide, we'll be offering $50k pa + super for a full time junior editor role.

Wait, is this serious? That's good money for a editor/mod position. (Granted I've no real insight into what the job requires).

    • +1

I couldn't believe it either. I was expecting, after the text "Please note that it's a junior position..", to read something like "so you will be paid in OzBargain up-votes not redeemable for cash." I'm simply amazed.

    • +23

We do pay our staffs more than just Eneloops.

      • +2

        more than just Eneloops.

so part of the payment is Eneloops? you should include that as a positive part of the role ;)

    • Exactly, I have been paid minimum wage ($17.40/hour, i.e. $35,000 per year) for a Junior Developer position before…

I was 3 years into my uni degree!!

  • Is there a minimum age?
I'm extremely keen but would need to balance school with OzBargain.

    • +2

need to balance school with OzBargain

Your other commitments might affect you working full-time, as we do want our staffs to be online, available, present at meetings, etc.

      • Yeah I was looking more at the part time after school and on the weekend shifts.
Could easily do 5 shifts a week 5-6 hours.
Maybe In a few years I could apply haha!
Seems so awesome that you can work for OzBargain!
        Everyone's dream job aye!

    OzBargain account in good standing

Shame I made some mistakes this year. Then again I'd be a conflict of interest and too busy bargain hunting to moderate 😂😂😂

No matter $50k pa + super is seriously good pay for a work-from-home job.

  • +6

My wife said I should apply for it since I'm on it 18 hours a day. So why not get paid for it.

    I'll send it through.

  • +6

wait this is ozbargain, first you should try to get someone to do this for free yeah?

    • +2

OzBargain has a role and ~30 "employees" for that, it's called a 'power user'! =)

The reasonable pay for this moderation position appears "commiserate" with having to deal with the worst of Internet "commentators" (aside from the usual moderation of spam/etc).

  • +2

With the amount of time people spend on OzBargain, they could do this with no additional time commitments required.

    • +3

That would be a utopian dream of any community collaborative platform assuming throwing infinite amount of manpower together you can produce masterpieces. We have been doing OzBargain for almost 12 years & watched it grown in size many fold. However the number of times moderators have to step in to "fix up" stuff have not reduced but multiplied exponentially. Maybe we just haven't found the secret formula.

      • Like Wikipedia?

        • +1

Wikipedia is….. cancer. If you've ever delved into its behind-the-scenes workings. (Hint: Don't. I had a very slight peek and it's like the worst parts of politics + academia).

        • +3

Most people don't see all the drama & fights behind a community site, and as @HighAndDry has said, there are a lot of community issues on Wikipedia. Ever wondered why they need to raise USD $91 million last year? Can't be just the servers. A lot would have gone to their huge number of staff & contractors.

        • @scotty: Oh and here I thought it was with no alteria motive….

Besides, once you go free, you kinda have to go free forever to keep consistency or else you would be going back on your word…..and going back on your word is one of the worse things people dislike….

For example Photobucket - they used to offer free image linking and sharing, they've now gone back on this and only paid users can share and link images…..and many of their free users have dropped out….well according to the articles I've ready anyways…. I hope Imgur doesn't go back on heir word too about free image hosting and sharing and linking…..otherwise I would have nowhere else to turn to to share hosted images…..for public display….

        hi scotty
as ozbargain's userbase grows, its starting to experience problems associated with big businesses - ie being extorted by fringe groups. Remember the deal on free gloves, and how certain rabid members demanded the guidelines 'updated' with terms specifically catering them?

IMO the most important criteria on any new staff is to not have a political bias.
You only need to look at whirlpool and OCAU on what's like to have moderators with Labor leaning views. Rational, well thought out posts and comments from the opposing side gets deleted because 'personal reasons'.

The above is in addition to the vexatious legal threats OZB did get from some store reps.

        • You only need to look at whirlpool and OCAU on what's like to have moderators with Labor moderate leaning views.

there, fixed that for you ;)

  • +2

    Good command of written English

The correct word is staff, not staffs!

    • +19

If I can write properly I would not have put up this job ads.

      • +4

*This job ad or these job ads.

Edit: Does this count as my application? ;)

    • +2

Congratulations, you've passed the test and scored the job.

      • Yes, just demonstrating my 'attention to detail'.

Unfortunately I'm unable to state why I'm the best candidate for the job, as I don't know any of the other candidates. :)

  • Any positions for a power user? 🤣

    • Moderators review current active users (especially helpful reporters) for potential power users. The position is not opened for application.

    • -1

a fan of a corrupt politician paid by the Chinese (Sam Dastyari) promoted to a power user, that'll turn up well :P

  • Can part-time include 2-3 days a week?

    • It would preferably be a few hours a day over the entire week.

  • +4

Good luck to the applicants. All the mods here are pretty on point.

  • -3

I could do the job with my eyes closed, but I couldn't work for ozbargain

    • +12

You act like they'd consider your application 😂

      • Elitist mentality.

  • +1

After receiving applications is there going to be an interview process? How are you going to determine who can meet the requirements?

Would giving a short list of applications power user abilities and giving them a test run with mod/edit responsibilities work?

    • Power User abilities are effectively just 'editor' abilities, power users have no real moderation ability (which seems to be the main part of this role).

      • Successful applicants will have ability to moderate and access to our moderation tools though, which is the reason why we might be picky with the selection.

Never thought I would see the day a job at ozbargain became legit and actually paid money.. How far we have come.

I am down for a volunteer helper role if available mainly for adding proper product tagging and maybe deal description fixing and adding extra information that would help potential buyers only because my time is limited and I would not even be able to do the job in the required hours but here and there whenever I binge ozbargain I can help if I see fit.

Am good as a volunteer helper for now nothing more. Let me know if you are interested but if there is too much extra behind the scenes drama and paperwork count me out.

I'll just use the report function and comments section like everybody else and let the official staff do the heavy lifting and work ;)

Plus wtf is ozcheapies and cheapchesplah (lol jk)

    Ozbargain ftw China number Wan

Here's an update on this. Over the last 2 days we have received almost 30 applications — some are potential candidates and some probably should not bother. Therefore if you still have not yet applied, you might want to consider how well you match up with the requirements here, rather than just "give it a try", as there's quite a bit of competition already.

As of the requirement "OzBargain account in good standing",

    • Make sure you have actually participated on this site by posting comments, posting deals, submitting reports, etc. We have a few that have blank user profile page despite joined years ago. Seriously.

    • Black marks in account history (been in penalty box for example) would make your application less favourable.

    • Moderators might suspect you being part of "factions" where group-votes/comments or vote-swaps were organised to boost popularity or to suppress negativity (from analysis of voting patterns). This too might make your application less favourable.

Also note that this role is not really about posting deals, but to help organising/editing the content that's already posted.

We are in the process of shortlisting a few candidates for interviews possibly next week. We will reach out to those shortlisted candidates.

    Regards,
    Scott

    • Ozb is one of the very few places whose Moderation team is spot on centre, free from bias. Hope it stays that way.

    • -3

I submitted my application and I just saw this comment now -I've posted a deal in the past but haven't exactly gotten the chance to post comments and submit reports but I'll give that a try in the meantime.

      • +7

I'll give that a try in the meantime.

That's not what Scott is saying, can't just suddenly start doing that. Need people who are active on the site who already know what's going on and have some idea of what's required.

And a history of sockpuppeting?! Yeah that's not gonna help 😂

I think a lot of people are probably seeing this as an "Apply for mod at EneloopCentre's Minecraft server". When in reality it's a real world job involving the management of a website owned by a legitimate Australian-registered company.

        • @Clear:

I think the reality is somewhere inbetween the two

        • @Clear: Even being a mod for a game server is pretty tough…..especially if it's a popular server too…..

        • @Zachary: Yes I ran a community with registered 500k members once. Very tough indeed.

        • @Clear: I'm guessing you left coz it was overwhelming? haha…

        • @Zachary: There was 80 of us to manage it. Surprisingly it died.

        • @Clear: What game was this for?

        • @Zachary: Minecraft 😂😂😂

        • @Clear: Must have been a massive ass server to be taking on 500k players at once!

Shame it died though……What was it called? I may have played on it once…..or if I didn't, my lil sis would have had….

    • Good luck to everyone that applied! Would consider if a position was available next year.

  • Would i have to sleep with the boss?

  • +2

You need to hire that new mod quickly, this has been up for over an hour and a half already: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/401102

  • 13 Sep: The role has been filled.
