Go to Insurance Companies for Bombs? Looking for Cheap Third Party Coverage

What are some of the best insurance companies to check out if you have a cheap shitty car, and just want some basic insurance so that if the worst happens you can fob it off to the insurance company to deal with?

I've checked out some of the more common ones, but the bigger providers seem to want at least $400. I've read a few threads in the past that said JustCar used to have some cheap rates around the $200 mark, but they've since closed down.

What I'll do is make a list of the suggestions, and check through them to see which turn out to be the best value.

Companies

Aami - $212 for basic cover
Budget - $225 for basic cover
NRMA (RACV in my case) - $320 for basic+fire theft*
Coles - $412 for basic cover
Woolworths - $291 for basic cover
Youi - No online quote, just a trick to get your mobile number
CGU - $272 for basic cover
Real Insurance - $292 for basic cover
Suncorp - $170 for basic cover
GIO - $250 for basic cover

Quotes were given purely online for a over 50 woman, with no accidents and long driving history.
I ended up choosing Suncorp for their low price. Notable companies include Budget which features coverage for unlisted drivers at $1200 total excess for only $50 more, and RACV for having a lowest price for tpp+fire and theft.

*RACV charged less for tpp+fire and theft than for TPP alone

  • Typically for me, AAMI or Budget insurance

    • What sort of prices have you managed to get from them?

      • $3-500 hundy for an old Mazda

  • My current car is with Budget, it's not a bomb yet though. I fond them the cheapest when I signed up, but I did note that their policy was more restrictive than some of the 'premium' providers. eg need to nominate all drivers and they will not cover non nominated drivers, unlike NRMA that will cover any licensed driver.

You get what you pay for, so check the PDS before signing up.

Third Party Property is worth considering for a bomb, assuming you can save enough to replace the bomb if an uninsured driver hits you, or you crash it yourself. It is cheaper protection.

    • My car is so cheap I could probably replace it just with the spare change I find underneath my couch cushions haha

This insurance business is just so confusing, with all the little 'gotchas' they chuck in. It seems hard to know what will lower/raise the premiums. Case in point, I did a quote with RACV, and it was $50 more expensive to get plain TPP insurance over TPP+Fire and theft.

  • I have 3rd party with nrma for $25 a month. Around $300 a year.

Your quote also reflects on if you've had any accidents/claims and what your age is. So a lot of people prices will different to what your quotes are.

  • i think diff state diff pricing .. if not try Coles $200 pa in qld

  • Hi OP have you tried Woolies car insurance. ? Its one of the ones I've been looking at. I have been thinking of changing my mums over as she hardly uses her car anymore and its getting older. Its an older Madza 2. They have pay as you drive as well which goes by how many ks you do. I think If youre a member it may be a bit cheaper. The other one I was looking at for her was Youi they have the same type of deal pay as you drive thing.
    Might be worth a look?
Have you had any type of insurance on this car before ?

  • +1

    Posted updated. Went with Suncorp

    • Thanks for the update. That is a really helpful list.

Did you find any of the insurers willing to payout if say an uninsured driver totalled your car?

      • Your welcome :)

Hmm, don't know about uninsured. Most of them seem willing to cover to cost of an accident if you have the details of the other driver, but I presume thats because its easy enough for them to add on all the other cases to chase up with other insurers. In any case, the amount you could claim if that happened was limited to $5000 or less for most of them
