Only 720p - so not true HD.

    • +12

      you mean 'not Full HD'

      • Burn!

I bow down before your prowess at Marketing Speak!!

    • +1

Only matters if you are watching blueray or playing games.

If you are watching TV then nothing is broadcast in 1080P so you do not need the extra resolution.

      • +1

what about shows broadcast in 1080i?

otherwise this is a pretty large size tv. with most games on ps3 720p, you're not really going to miss out on much esp if you sit further away.

        • This TV supports 1080i natively.

        • +3

what about shows broadcast in 1080i?

1080i only has a horizontal resolution of 540 lines.

720P is actually a better image than 1080i due to the progressive scan.

        • +1

1080i may have less horizontal lines, but it does have more vertical - which can provide a subjectively better picture, depending on various factors.

You have to remember that even though each frame is half 1080 line, the interlacing usually does a good job and the image will look better.

Either way though - we certainly need more "HD" channels. =]

So you are one of the people that plans on buying a large format TV and not watching blurays?

Terrible way to spend $700 IMO.

        • +2

i bought my 720p 50" samsung plasma more than a year and a half ago for $760.. i dont watch blurays.. not a terrible way to spend money and neither is this.. some people are too pedantic about resolution..

    • +5

I would skip straight to the Full HD as well!

      • +1

These days, yes so would I. It doesn't change the fact though that LOTS of people got burned buying 1080p panels back in the day when they were expensive and bluray was a rarity. The power of marketing. This panel shouldn't be overlooked though for the price conscious. Will do everything other than bluray as good as the 1080p version… Most(no, all)looking 50inch wouldn't see the difference even with bluray(720P/1080P).

    • +1

      More like $300 more dude.

      • +1

        Ah yep sorry maths fail!

  • +4

According to the specs this monster burns 460W/hour!
At current energy prices of 42c/kWh it will cost $0.80 to run this dinosaur each and every day if it is on for 4 hours/day. Or close to $300/year.

    • Just buy turning the power saving mode to low you can save a lot of power.

The screen will be slightly less bright which you will probably want anyway.

    • +1

If you are paying 42c/kWh you need to change suppliers..
      its 22c/kWh here in vic

Even if this were full HD, buying Plasma isn't a sound economic decision. For one, these have drastically shortened lives when compared to LCD screens of the same size. Secondly, these suck up a crazy amount of electricity. With our electricity rates set to rise 60% in the next few years, a Plasma television set should not be chosen over a fridge.

    • plasma is absolute value for money if you know what your looking for. Lcd vs led vs plasma picture quality, plasma wins hands down in all aspects regarding picture quality, power consumption can be quite close to a lcd if u calibrate it,or simply dont watch it on the awful "dynamic mode" that comes standard. All HT enthusiasts will know plasma is the way to go, dont let a salesman tell u otherwise, cause all they wanna do is up sell.

    • You must be confusing the old plasma with the new ones. :P

      Don't be led astray - http://www.energyrating.gov.au/appsearch/tv_srch.asp

You'll find that most current model plasma are very close to LCD/LED TVs.

wrong, nearly no factory put more money in plasma technology.

        • Let's say I believe you - how do you explain the minimal power usage difference in current plasma and other large format TVs?

        • There are lots of reasons why companies are moving away from Plasmas but currently $ for $, image quality is NOT one of them. LCD will in time be MUCH cheaper to manufacture than plasma and we are already seeing this in the smaller TVs. Less cost = more profit. And evenually they certainly will have a better picture quality for less $ - but not yet. Any company that does not make the move will lose out in time.

And yes, I have this exact model plasma and love it - got it for $680 delivered a few months back but had a bit of luck getting several promotions in one hit (including free delivery that applied later once their stock had been replenished).

(copied from a previous post) The whole power thing for me is a non-issue. With the money you save on the plasma you can buy a 2nd small LCD TV for those times when a big screen is not an issue. Depending upon you viewing habits and how you take advantage of that situation, you could on average be using less power than if you had one expensive LCD TV. PLUS you would extend the life of your plasma since you won’t be using it all the time.

      • Close to LCD, yes indeed; close to LED backlit sets…nein, mein freund! ;)

Plasmas may have shortened lifespans, but by the time you'd notice you'd need a new TV anyway. Let's be realistic here.

  • and Plasmas are much nicer to watch, as long as you don't have an overly lit room.

    • Agree 100% that Plasma picture kicks butt over LCD/LED. Those that can't see the difference don't deserve to own a Plasma!

      • the exact reason why HT enthusiasts are still buying plasmas, i hate it how marketing can make a technology obsolete. DLP's were freaking awesome when they were around, pretty hard to find news ones these days. Same goes with the pioneer kuro plasma, best black levels and colour reproduction i have ever seen before it got discontinued.

        • Yep. I have an old high end CTR TV which still has a better picture quality than some LCD/Plasms TV's made today, when people have asked what type of TV it is they do not accept it is a CRT until i show them

        • yeah CRT for the win!!!
