Updating Kitchen with New Cabinet, Benchtop and Rangehood

Hi Guys
Updating my kitchen cabinet, bench top and getting a new sink, a tap and new rangehood. The whole idea is to finally update our house we bought 6 years ago and could not afford to update.
The price of cabinets is what’s the major one as the good guys gave me quote of like $7500 and Kitchens U build for $6000. The first question is I’m not sure of the quality difference so what should I check to get the ones that stay there for long term as these guys scare you to go to Ikea or Bunnings. Second is how much is a reasonable expense for trades on it please ?
The price of stone bench top in both cases for Caesar style I’m thinking is close to $3k with install. Good guys quoted $2k on labour with install for rangehood I buy but I have a feeling it would end up being more to take old stuff old and away and to install it. Hoping I could get some experienced advice as I’m rookie in this department please on how to get the best update for long term and how to get it at the least possible expense.

Get a quote from a dedicated kitchen cabinet maker. When we did quotes for our kitchen, it wasn't that much more expensive to have it done. Also, try and sell your old kitchen as it is (stick it up on gumtree) it saves on disposal and you make a bit of cash.

Goodguys use Kinsman. You may be able to negotiate a better deal by going to them direct and cutting TGG out.

I went with an Ikea Kitchen, but I spent up pretty big. The total cost of my kitchen came in at ~ $35k including appliances. The cabinets were ~$14k, ~$3k for install ~$10k for appliances and the rest in bench tops and miscellaneous things like lighting, plumbing etc. Some pieces like the range hood flue cover had to be custom made, owing to the 3.3 metre high ceilings.

I am very happy with the kitchen as a whole, and the warranty on Ikea products is a long time. In terms of bench tops, I personally feel that Caesar Stone is the shag pile carpet of the 2010's. It's literally aggregate and epoxy mixed together. I went with solid wood bench tops, which i find super durable and great to use. They ended up costing ball park the same as Caesar stone, but I feel they are much more aesthetically pleasing.

    • Nice kitchen and thanks for the pic. Do you have a dishwasher? Is it beneath the sink?

      • It’s to the left of the sink in the island. It’s hidden behind a panel, so it looks like a regular door. The kitchen also has led lighting throughout including in the glass cupboards. There’s heaps of room and i feel it’s every bit as good, if not better, than my mum’s $70k kitchen. The only real difference I can spot is that her cupboards have three panels of laminated chipboard as a floor/base, while mine have 2 I think.

Freedom do kitchens too. You can do interest free for 36 months also.

  • I had Freedom do my Kitchen late 2011 (including appliances). They were more expensive in comparison to other kitchen places.
Freedom designed a great kitchen for me, however I have had the rangehood replaced three times (& the new one has not worked for the last year), the oven timer malfunctioned twice, the tap had to be replaced, and the stove top chipped within a week. Now the bench tops have 'lifted', as were not sealed at the joins, and the cabinets scratch easily. The worst part was when they installed…they did everything inside and every single little crevice in my home had saw dust in it…
Best bet is to go to a few dedicated kitchen place. I found the smaller businesses a wealth of knowledge and regret not going through one of them

Freedom kitchens is a dedicated kitchen place. They are a different entity to Freedom. We did get quotes from other places, but the zero interest finance for 36 months pretty much the main reason we went with them, the reviews for bespoke were also fine when we researched.

We are almost finished getting a new Freedom kitchen installed now. The tradies have been really good with variations and other items. I suppose it might depend which contractor you get in terms of the tradies?

      We bought our own appliances.

Hopefully we don't have the same issues with the cabinets as you, but perhaps they've improved the surfaces since.
