How to jump over P-plates for motorbike

I have an overseas motorcycle license that has expired more than 5 years ago. I felt I need some relaxation techniques in my life and I mentioned to my wife that I should buy a byte and surprisingly she said yes. So went and bot one. Now my license being expired, and issued oversees, when I went to RTA they said I have to start again from L. That is ok … but then I learned also that on P's you are restricted to LAMS bikes. Of couse i did not buy a LAMS bike
One colleague of mine keeps telling me he was exactly in the same situation and when he was supposed to switch from L to P he went directly to FULL license because RTA agreed to recognise past experience.

How can I convince RTA to give me full license instead of P ?

You speak to them, if they say no then it's a no.

I was speaking but this days there is a “young guy” put in charge of talking to customers. The experienced workers are holding back. I know because initially the new guy told me they will transfer my license. So it was almost transferred but the computer was complaining so a senior worker was called to overwrite the computer. He realised it was expired too long ago.
Maybe if I can speak again to a senior rta person and ask for a concession…

If you are over 25, you may be able to skip the P2 section of your license requirements…

Provisional License requirements for over 25

    • Yes, but I still have 1 year in p and a bike in the carport :)

One year is still better than 30 months or what ever the current time frame is.

When I moved from NSW to Victoria almost 20 years ago, I had my full motorcycle license in NSW, but because of the laws in Vic being different and my age at the time, I had to go back and finish another 12 months worth of Provisional license in Vic… so stupid.

Interesting. In WA, we still have to have a practical test :/ Source

Though, "During the assessment, you must wear the appropriate attire for riding, such as: Long-sleeved shirt or fully-sleeved jacket."

So, a long sleeved shirt is appropriate ;)

      • That sounds great! NSW is a nanny state … no offence fellow NSWeans

You go back to that country get a full license again I suppose; but before that see if the RTA will acknowledge that countries licensing to convert to Aus.

    • Yes, i considered, but is too expensive. It may happen if I can not a concession from rta

How can I convince RTA to give me full license instead of P ?

And what did the RTA say when you asked them?

    Get a small ramp.

  • Is it possible to renew your overseas license? They should look more favorably on a current overseas license than a long expired one.

  • In case someone finds this thread, here is the answer from OP after obtaining full licence

Overseas expired licence is recognised by rms but they ask you to do the tests again. After you do MoST then you can go to rms with the most results and overseas expired licence and you will get full licence , you skip over P plates
