Smart downlight ideas

Hi All

I was planning to change my normal lights to downlights across the house.I was planning to put a white light (with dimmer) and I think it also has a switch (behind the bulb) to turn to warm daylight.

However A friend suggested that i should use smart bulbs instead of LED. I have never used or seen smart bulb downlights at anyone's house. I wanted to investigate before I made a selection. I think I would love to be able to change the lights based on mood :). Mostly convert lounge into a disco with children :)

Any advice on what options (i.e. downlights with smart bulb) and how to do it (like hire usual sparky) will be great? Even advice on why not to go for "smart bulb" option will be appreciated.

Thanks
Rav

My sister has these, they are a pain in the ass, as you can't use the lightswitch you have to turn lights on and off via her husbands smartphone. I keep flicking the switch when I go there and it messes it all up. Really seems pretty inconveint to me.

  • Most smart bulbs are in the general light bulb category - not downlights. If you are planning on upgrading your house I would stay away from smart bulbs, as hardware or app support could be discontinued, leaving you in the lurch. I've never seen the appeal of smart bulbs, beyond being a gimmick. Who wants to turn a light on with an app? Friggen just reach over and press the switch.

    • i thought smart ones can be voice controlled using google/alexa

when you got home and if light switch far away from door or multiple switches … just use voice control turn on whole corridor or living areas

when you're on bed asleep , woke up at night to pee… voice control turn on

or forgot to turn off , woke up at night … voice control turn off without walking to light switch , get back to sleep

  • Xiaomi make a smart downlight. I have one on the way, if its as good as the other xiaomi philips gear Ill be buying a few more.

  • I am in the research phase of doing exactly the same with downlights.

A few cool things like motion detector, automatically lights on/off at certain times, voice control etc are worthwhile to me, but each to their own. I was looking at the Phillips Hue downlight as I believe it's the most reputable brand.

I think an electrician is necessary for sure, but I haven't got any quotes yet.

  • smart downlight will be better, they can change different colors

  • Smart bulbs are probably LED. But LED might not be smart.
