Surge Protector Power Strip Trips RCD Safety Switch

Hi Ozb electricians,

I have tried 2 different Surge Protector Power Strips and they somehow trip the RCD whenever i turn off the switch on the power strips (not wall switch) with devices like laptop & speakers plugged in.

Doesn't seems to happen on cheap ass dumb power strip.

RCD too sensitive / incompatible / faulty ?
or, due to design of surge protector blocks/redirects leftover current flow back & disperse through the circuit ?

Thanks.

What did the electrician say when he turned up?

yeah nah… call electrician for power strips tripping rcd ?

i'd rather use cheapo dumb strips and throw away the belkins surge protector

what's next, call electrician for light computer not turning on ? LoL

  • Two of the same ones?
Tried other power outlets (on different circuits)?
    Tried a different house?

    • 2 different ones , belkins and powertech (jaycar)

tried different outlets but all 3 circuits under 1 rcd

      haven't try other house

  • Probably some thing to do with impedance you could have an issue with earthing on these boards? What safety features do they have?

    • didn't have the box anymore, but they're belkins & powertech surge protectors … with led lit on 'protected' & 'earthed'

  • I'd chuck the dodgy power strips and buy new ones

What about with the speakers etc not plugged in?

  • Paid charming/rustic amount to just partially rewire an old house, back in the relatively early days of both new builds and any wiring upgrades coming with mandated safety-switch installation.

Living in the property at the time. Two different surge-protectors in use, both causing a measured issue, when things were checked. Sparky hadn't encountered the problem before, but overall insufficient earth-leakage to trip the RCD. I wasn't too worried. He did leave the job with a furrowed brow, though.

He may resemble Gordon Ramsay, at this point. One of various threads that spring from a quick search - https://www.theiet.org/forums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=20…

Damaging spikes I think very rare, and surge protectors won't protect you from actual surges, so don't stress over need to buy others to replace the ones you have. Or anything else, if RCD threshold not being crossed. That thread should explain how maybe other factors might be involved, and even if so, likely not serious.
