USA Foods Internet Specials (Dr Pepper Special!)

290

Received a UsaFood's specials email recently and thought I'd share it here. The deals are only for February or while stocks last so if you find no more Dr Pepper, it's been OzBargained ;).

The biggest bargain is the 2x24 can packs of Dr Pepper for $40! Mind you this is an Internet order so you will need to add delivery (Which is worked out for you after you sign up and it's in your shopping cart, yes I know it's one of those damn annoying things but well worth it. See my edit #2 on how to work out shipping without signing up). To ship to Canberra it cost me $15 + $2.50 posting and handling charges (It weighs 20kg and the cans work out to be ~$1.25 each). Seeming you can get single cans for $2.50-$3 and they're the High Fructose Corn Syrup varieties, this is great value.

The Dr Pepper is actually the Dublin Imperial Sugar variety that tastes better than the Corn Syrup version! There's also a different cheaper version of Pop-Tarts (Toast'ems) that they say is "fresher" tasting than Pop-Tarts whatever that means.

Placed an order on the 14th and they shipped it on the 15th.

Minimum order amount is $20 but a packet of Toast'ems or two will bump the order over the required amount :)

Go forth fellow OzBargainers, drink Dr Pepper and be happy!

I should also give everyone a heads-up that some of the expiry dates on the specials are either close or gone over but with so much sugar in these things, they should last forever!

Edit: My mistake, I accidentally put cane sugar instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup that is the more common variety.

Edit #2: To calculate shipping costs go to the bottom of this page: http://www.usafoods.com.au/postage.php and how much it costs for example to Perth is (Basic Rate)+(20xPer Kilo Rate) so $7.34+(20x$1.36)=$34.54 which still is only $74.54 or $1.55 a can!

It has nothing to do with opinion.

Post a competing price or revoke your neg, quite a simple concept.

    • +2

Where can you get it cheaper bti_jet? Only other place I've seen them is at The Lolly Store, Nutshack etc and from what I recall it's at least $3 or $4 a can. I've only had the US ones made with high fructose corn syrup. Curious to taste ones made of sugar.

      • Most IGAs in Canberra sell Dr Pepper for $2 per can. Still doesn't come close to $1.25 per can! Definitely a bargain. :)

  • +2

Guess it depends where you are but I often see DrP at $15 for a 12 pack on the Gold Coast (same price for other US drinks like Cherry Coke too)…

    • Where?

      • OK sorry I dont know road names… on the road with Haunted House on it in Surfers go north, past the clock tower and on the left are a load of shops selling drinks and sweets. Several of these sell pop-tarts, US drinks and chocolate bars etc. When they have them close to the useby date they reduce them down to $15 and less, otherwise they seem to be $17-18. Also some of the shops have unadvertised deals on multibuys if you ask (ie Rease Nutrageous bars were $2.50 each or 2 for $3.50 the other week)

Remember diet drinks really do go off on, while sugar ones pretty much last and last.

The Discount Grocery store near Spotlight also have US foods in, they were selling off the twin packs of Reases Nutty cupcake things for 50cents each last time I was there 2 weeks ago.

  • No Red Bull Cola. Disappointing. Ordered it from the USA via eBay previously.

  • +2

alot of shops sell dr pepper $15 for 12 pack. I have seen it for $6 when it was nearing expiry as well. the postage kills this deal for me, good enough if your local to the store.

  • +1

The nearest shop near me sells it for $22 for a 12 pack…

  • +7

Having to sign up to get shipping info is crap.

$40 shipping(Perth) on a $40 order is crap as well.

$2.50 handling fee is LOL bad.

    • Thanks for checking the postage for the WA folk. Saves us from signing up.

    • +2

Y'all count yerselves lucky they dont wanna Tip!!! ;-)

  • Toast’ems can be bought in almost any IGA or Foodland for about $4.50 (About the same price as ordering online + postage costs).

  • are the toastems any good? i wish kellogs would bring back poptarts for australia, they were a nice treat occasionally.

    • We already have pop tarts here. My wife bought me some.

      • Probably imported though right? For like $11+ a box?

  • Save postage and maybe you can collect from Moorabbin?
83 cents a can is good value.
i really miss this stuff, however not many of my friends like Dr Pepper.

(Hmmmm, $10 postage or at least $6 in petrol + 1hr driving, cheaper to have delivered)

  • @nubzy - Their almost as good as Pop Tarts, IMO. The taste is fairly identical, but Toastems have about 25% extra crust and less inner flavour layer.

  • +2

I got all excited for a second. 780g of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups for $10! Then I checked the postage. It more than doubled the cost. Thank god for that, I would have needed a personal trainer to rid myself of the damage.

    • -3

Those butter cups are just nasty
      IMHO

      • D= Take it back.

      • Yes, how DARE you! ;)

        • Deal with it lol, ive tried them once that was enough, neg me all you like, i dont mind:)

      • Reeses peanut butter cups are to die for. they are so expensive to buy in australia, i wish someone would pick the brand up and manufacture them here. love peanut butter and chocolate..

  • -4

Whole bunch of crap at ordinary prices, with LOL shipping = meh

How anyone can drink Dr Pepper is beyond me….

  • +4

Was gonna get the 2 dr pepper slabs, but it is over $30 in postage alone to me. Didn't realise they were gonna arrive by private jet!

    • +3

      Ahhh….the world according to clandestino

It may (or may not) be true that this can’t be purchased at a cheaper price

you don't know…yet you neg…..why is that?….why add to the possibility the post may get pulled, just because you don't know anything about it?

Comment for sure…..make your views heard…..but don't neg based on ignorance

Take a look at all the top deals/ popular deals on ozbargain,

The most popular deals are not necessarily the best deals

      • -6

The most popular deals are fantastic value for money. That's what makes them great bargains, and that's why everyone votes for them.

This deal however, simply isn't good value for money.

Andy - I don't think that you appreciate that price is not the only factor to take into account. If it was, perhaps your comments would be valid.

        • +1

The most popular deals are fantastic value for money. That’s what makes them great bargains, and that’s why everyone votes for them.

Indeed….. but as previously stated….the most popular are not necessarily the best deals… simply the most popular

This deal however, simply isn’t good value for money.

You said yourself that you didn't know if this was the cheapest….so how can you make that judgement? Are you comparing it with pepsi, fanta, tap water? Just because you don't think it's good value for money does not make it a fact…..it's your opinion, and clearly, others differ in that opinion.

I don’t think that you appreciate that price is not the only factor to take into account

yet that is what you based your neg on… no mention of brand, current cost, import/local, comparison with other retailers, etc……

48 cans of soft drink for nearly $60 ??!

If you're not familiar with a product, (or retailer), it's hard to make any comment other than speculation, opinion or educated guess…. all welcome…… but none of which should have a neg attached.

        • -4

andy, again I don't think you are appreciating that a bargain, isn't simply a function of price. Read neil's post too !
          a) It needs to be cheap. The product can't be purchased anywhere else, at a cheaper price.
          b) It needs to be good value.

Consider a luxury Brisbane riverfront apartment. The building (the brand), is in a superb location, great facilities, it is really one of a kind. On the face of it, it's just another building, but people do value the brand at a premium.

Now, inside the building there are many apartments, with identical floorplans. Some are for sale at $700k, some at $680k…and there is one for sale at $600k. There's nothing wrong with it… It is identical to the others. It is the cheapest available. But it has been for sale for over 6months and no-one has bought it !! Why ? Because it isn't a bargain. The value isn't there.

You can't define a bargain simply by comparing to other retail prices. The value offering needs to be considered !!! Yet judging by your response, you have got the concepts of "value" and "price" inextricably linked in your mind.

One more example. I have 3 matchboxes in my hand. You can't buy this brand of match, anywhere else on earth. 2 of them are for sale, for $1,000 each. But one is for sale for $900. By your definition, this last one is a bargain.

        • +2

          a) It needs to be cheap. The product can’t be purchased anywhere else, at a cheaper price.

          It cant be.

If you can go find Dr Pepper cheaper then post it here as a bargain.

          b) It needs to be good value.

Value is defined by everyone differently.

          Read neil’s post too !

          Which part?
          This?

It’s a good deal if you appreciate soft drinks

          or this

Where can you get it cheaper bti_jet?

        • One more example. I have 3 matchboxes in my hand. You can’t buy this brand of match, anywhere else on earth. 2 of them are for sale, for $1,000 each. But one is for sale for $900. By your definition, this last one is a bargain.

If I want this particular matchbox….then yes, indeed it is a bargain, it's $100 off, and I want to know about it. Just because an item has limited appeal, doesn't mean it's not a bargain. How we 'value' something is based largely on our own personal views. You clearly, for whatever reason, do not feel that this item is worth $60…. that's fine, it's your opinion (one which I share). However, negging the post based on an opinion is not appropriate.

It needs to be good value.

'Value' is not an objective factor…. it's an opinion, based on knowledge, (I am including marketing here), and experience. Your 'value' is different to everyone else's

          Read neil’s post too !

yep….. "It’s a good deal", (Neil's opinion is that it is value for money)
"I feel the same as you clandestino but in regards to wine" (Neil does not see the value in expensive wine, as you don't in expensive soft drinks.)
"it’s different strokes for different folks." (Everyone has different opinions)

Not sure which bits disagree with my comments…

So really negative votes purely based on pricing requires caution. Are you imposing your set of values on another in the community?

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

        • Andy-

going back to this matchbox example, you state it is a bargain because of pricing. But in a "real life" situation, it would never be considered as a bargain. In fact, it would be considered exactly the opposite.

Of course, the concept of "value" is subjective. However it is integral to the decision making process, and the very definition of the word "bargain". When people identify a bargain that fulfils the 2 criteria of "cheap price" and "great value"- the item quickly sells out. This dr Pepper deal only fits 1 criteria. I'd be extremely surprised to see it sell out.

I think this has been a pretty interesting discussion (that probably should have taken place in the forum!). It has highlighted to me that ozbargain users are free to take into account the value proposition, when voting "positive" on a deal. But when voting "negative", value cannot come into the equation.

Effectively, two different defitions of the concept of "bargain" are in place… one for negative votes, and one for positives.

        • You make a good point….. I think if the positive votes had any effect other than, (more or less), maintaining a post's status quo, it would be an issue…. but because the negative vote has such power over whether a post (and indeed the poster) lives or dies, then it has to be framed around more tangible things.

        • going back to this matchbox example, you state it is a bargain because of pricing. But in a “real life” situation, it would never be considered as a bargain. In fact, it would be considered exactly the opposite.

If I want this particular matchbox, I would consider it a bargain…..you might not… neither of us is right…. or wrong

        • +1

^This is the most crazy I've seen all day. Quit with the pointless analogies please, if you don't know the product, you're no authority to judge whether it's a good bargain or not. Someone might baulk at how someone can pay $100 a Lego set (despite it being a huge bargain), because to them it's 'just a toy.'

You're comparing Dr Pepper to regular soda which is apples and oranges. As far as I'm aware, it's difficult and expensive to procure in this country so for those who like the product (frankly, I think it tastes horrid), it's a great bargain and has every right to be posted.

I think the crux of the confusion is that you're equating this drink with the regular kind you can pick up in any supermarket and that they're interchangeable. They're not. It isn't simply a matter of different brand matches, that are otherwise identical. You're comparing completely different products.

    • It's a good deal if you appreciate soft drinks albeit Dr. Pepper is an acquired taste. I'm a big soft drink drinker (if that's a phrase) but don't like wine. I feel the same as you clandestino but in regards to wine although it's different strokes for different folks.

I didn't see anything on the website but has anyone placed an order an then picked up? Thinking about getting those Reeses Pieces.

      P.S.
If anyone wants to see a cool soft drink store in the US (don't send to AUS or rather it's too expensive), check out http://www.sodapopstop.com/home.cfm.
They have over 500 soft drinks in stock! Google around, there is a documentary they did on this store. Pretty interesting.

      • Me too re: wine, it's just grape juice that's gone off ;-) Interesting "pop" site but they are missing Limca and Thumbs Up to name a couple ;-)

    • +2

Not sure how this can be considered a bargain? 48 cans of soft drink for nearly $60 ??

This is 48 cans of imported soft drink.

Go and try to buy it from a supermarket and it will cost toy $2+ per can.

This is much cheaper so is a bargain.

    • +4

It's a bargain. I personally hate Dr Pepper, but this is a bargain.

People post slabs of coke at $14.99 for a 30 pack when you can get the home brand cola for that price, or better, every day. How is this any different?

  • fark me, those smores kits sound awesome!!!

might have to grab one when i go to melbs next. used to go to the Bentleigh store a lot, but the moorabin store is harder to get to, via public transport. sounds like i need to drive over and do a purvis cellars/usa foods drop in… mmm beer and imported teeth rotting fun

  • May order some, also the clam chowder, I regularly have a stock pile of both back in the uni days.

      Come on Frenchie, chowdah!

  • would love if they had true blood.
    http://www.trubeverage.com/

    • I picked up a bottle at my local dymocks a few months back (Fremantle). Still undecided on actually drinking the thing though.

  • Seeming you can get single cans for $2.50-$3 and they’re the cane sugar varieties, this is great value.

    Dr Pepper uses cane sugar?

The Dr pepper for sale at my supermarket uses High Fructose Corn Syrup.

    • The most common US ones are with the Fructose corn stuff, while those from Dublin Texas (and Uk ones too) still use sugar.

  • $85 shipped to Perth. Still cheaper than most IGA's but that's a hell of a lot of money.

    • +1

If you look hard enough, Coles sometimes do stock Dr Pepper for around $1.80~/can. Bought some from Carousel the other day.

      • Coles in East Vic park sells Dr Pepper, don't know how much they are tho.

      • Coles fremantle usually carries at least a couple slabs of these also at around $1.80.

  • Where can you see the 'best before' dates that the site talks about?…it says they're listed but I must be up too late to see them.

EDIT: found 'em, they're not on the individual pages (AFAICT) but on the main link page

  • +3

To those that mentioned earlier about Dr Pepper being expensive and this not being a bargain - believe it or not this IS a bargain, depending on where you live! Sure, I remember when you used to be able to get Dr Pepper in 1.25L bottles from Woolworths, but not anymore!

Sometimes you have to fork out for things that you really want/enjoy. I recently purchased a 24-pack (bottles) of Royal Crown Draft Cola direct from the manufacturers as you couldn't purchase them anywhere else in Australia (even though Royal Crown Draft Cola is sold at supermarkets in NZ!) As they only used Fastway Couriers, total cost was ~$60 for the slab delivered. The ladies also signed me up with a discount card for future purchases (which also gave me 5% off the said order). Considering it came form Bundaberg in Qld just as the floods were happening, I was pretty pleased to receive it quickly!

To sum it up, everyone has different tastes - some people want to spend their cash on such things as fast cars, the latest computers, travel, women, food or fancy bottles of drink - or a bit of everything :)

  • -1

I tried Dr Pepper once and it was pretty nasty to me :P

  • All those people who said they've seen Dr Pepper $15 for a 12 pack, anyone seen that around the Hornsby area in NSW?

  • +5

Just placed my order for the Dr Pepper.

Also found a coupon code that works "nyc12" - gives you a 10% discount off your purchase (excluding shipping).

  • +4

if you are in nsw, just go http://www.bonfect.com.au/
    they are imported snack wholesaler
A lot of small business buy snacks from them

    • thanks for the link!

    • Do they sell directly to the public?

  • I am also shipping to Canberra but when I go to checkout they are charging $31.70 for shipping?! How did you get $17.50?

    • I got that originally (I was willing to pay that for delivery as they still work out to be ~$1.50 a can) but then when I checked my order later after they shipped it and the below is what is on the order:

      Order Details
      1 x Dublin Dr Pepper 2 Slab Special (48 cans) - best by June 2011 @ $40.00 = $40.00
      Total: $40.00
      + handling: $2.50
      + shipping: $14.94
      Grand Total: $57.44

I think the shipping price you get is their webpages estimate of the fees.

      • Oh OK thanks for that. Will I have the option to cancel the order if I don't get the same updated shipping price that you received?

        • No because it would mean that they have shipped your order and charged you.

But if you look at their delivery page you are able to work out the price of postage and get the same $14.94
          http://www.usafoods.com.au/postage.php

  • For anyone living in melbourne, you can also get dr pepper regularly at CostCo. Its not a bargain, and you have to pay $60 membership (or go in with someone with a membership) but for a regular supply of dr pepper, CostCo is the place to go. I hear sydney is getting a Cosstco soon.

    • and Canberra Soon too!!! Goooooo Costco!!! Cant wait!

      • i know! costco is awesome, the beef jerky is so cheap. $9 for 255grams!

    • I think CostCo sells the HFCS version though.

  • You can just go to moorabbin if your in Victoria.

  • Not extremely relevant but just letting everyone know that USA foods has the cheapest Ben and Jerry's ice cream I have ever seen, pretty sure they are the cheapest at $10 a pint. I stock up from there generally :D

  • +1

Those in the market for Reeses Peanut Butter Cups,

    CatchoftheDay has 36 for $35, http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

  • +1

Just a note, the specials are internet only, made the mistake of going there only to find out the Reese's weren't 3 for $10 :( Although gorging on them now is making me happier! :) Also the CatchoftheDay deal isn't that special, usafoods are selling 8 for $4, probably save on postage though with COTD

Edit: my bad, realised the 8 for $4 ones are smaller I think, only 15g each.

  • If you live near Melbourne city, myCandy on Peel Street, just next to QV sells Dr pepper, $30 for 24 cans. Corn Syrup. But they only open on Market days. They have other American sodas too.

edit: They sell poptarts at $7.95.
