Received Counterfeit Samsung EVO+ Card from eBay

Hi all, interesting scenario.

So I took the plunge and decided to purchase an Evo+ Card from this seller:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/123257448995

Feedback seemed okay but it did seem a little cheaper than other sellers. So things I noticed were:

  • The memory card has the inability to be formatted by Windows. I have tried an SD Card reader as well as placing the SD Card into a slot
  • I am unable to write any data to the SD Card.
  • The SD Card Read back emblem does not contain the Samsung emblem imprint compared to my genuine one.
  • The packaging says made in Korea while the model number says 'CN' at the end, denoting China. The back of the actual SD Card says 'Made in Taiwan', and none of the model numbers shown on the packaging match.
  • According to Samsung in this link: (https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Memory-Storage/Counterfe…), the back of the memory card should state it is made in either Korea or the Philippines, not Taiwan.
  • Downloading the following application (https://www.heise.de/download/product/h2testw-50539) to test the memory card, the program was unable to write the SD Card at all.

So Paypal got back to me quickly and asked me return the item for a refund, which I'm going to express post tommorow. Just wondering if it's run of the mill to do this as I can't seem to upload any photos until the seller responds. Bit shitty I have to pay return postage

  • so, a person who previously only sold fidget spinners is now selling high capacity microsd cards

    • And they seem to have sold a few. 13 more were sold after I did my order.

  • if you paid via paypal, see if you are eligible for paypal refunded returns on postage cost…keep your receipt for express post and take a photo of the letter.

if you did opt in for the return postage before

  • Thanks for the heads up. Depressing but good to know.

    • Figured it might help others.

  • Put up registered mail so there is confirmation in reception.

    • Will do!

  • So, if the card cannot be formatted or written to, it's basically the world's most expensive guitar pick.

  • Joke aside, please forgive me. Sorry to hear it happened, I hope you get a good outcome.

  • 25 feedback?!

    sigh

    • I know :(

  • I thought you didn't need to return a counterfeit product?

    • Probably depends on whether you submit a claim based on it being counterfeit, or simply as not working.

      • Couldn't find one for counterfeit so I selected 'Not as Described'.

    • Op is claiming an snad.

You can buy SD cards off eBay…..just need to ensure it's from a reputable seller & someone with way more feedback/history to their name. For example PC Byte

      • Yeah from an actual store that happens to also sell on ebay would be fine, but not some random person or online-only store that you don't know the reputation of
