Where to Buy a Shaver Now That We Can't Use Amazon?

I need a new beard trimmer, I was looking at the Wahl 9818 and noticed its $92 delivered from Amazon US to Brisbane, but obviously they won't let me finish checkout, however I can buy one for $170 in Australia.

Does anyone know of any other shops or brands where I can at least get value for money? I don't want to pay nearly 100% of the product price in Australia tax.

Hey! So not sure if this will help or not, but I recently converted to double edge razor wet shaving. You can get setup for next to nothing, or pay a few more dollars and be very setup. Look up merkur 34c.

If you are looking for a trimmer, I can't help a lot, but if you want a really comfortable and cheap smooth shave, this is a great way to go.

Welcome to the dark side. Seriously though expencive blades are like $50 a 100 pack, cheapies can be had for $8 per 100…

I personaly use derbys, i found they gave a better shave then feathers for me.

      • I've been shaving like this for years, going through one blade a day. I think an electric shaver gives me a closer shave, maybe I don't have the knack of it yet.

        • Which blades are you using?

        • At the moment, Derby blades. But I used to use some Russian one I got from Amazon years ago until they finally ran out.

        • One Blade a day? geez, they last me a minimum of 2 weeks of every 2 day shaving. and I'm using Feather which are super sharp but go dull quicker. you got your technique right? have a chat to the folks at badger and blade…

      • Haha yeah, ironically I don't even have a Merkur 34c. I cottoned on to this seeing a "buy it for life" post for a Gillette fat boy, looked into it further and bought a $3.50 butterfly shaver off ebay and a sample Gillette blades I saw advertised here on OzBargain. Initial investment <$10

Since then I have picked up a GEM 1912 from an antique store, another 3 piece from another store, a feather sample pack, a lord sample pack and 50 single blades from England for my GEM 1912. In the mail I have a replica Merkur Futur and for fathers day I have a Rockwell 6S on the way. Plus the all the other software…

So for something I could easily have been setup with for <$50 and been very comfortable, i have dropped about $250. But its a bit of fun, and today I was sitting there feeling my crazy smooth face after a super comfortable shave and its totally worth it.

I agree so far on the feathers, the first shave was OK, the second was already pulling. Green Gillettes so far are my fav double edge blades, Lord platinum second, haven't gotten to the derbys yet, will give them a go next once I made dint in what I have. The single blades are surprisingly good too, but need to really prep well otherwise you get some mad razor burn, but when you do your prep they are awesome.

    • I probably should have specified that I only want to trim my beard, thanks though!

  • I bought on Prime Day on Amazon AU. I hear you though, shavers in oz are ridiculously expensive.

Not too bad of a markup. Given this will get you a 2 year warranty with consumer laws.

Google around for a 10 or 15% off shaver shop voucher

$92 to $170 is not too bad of a markup?

edit: Amazon also has excellent after sales support. They have happily refunded the cost of faulty items without any hassle for me.

      • Given $92 USD is ~125 AUD

You can get $10 off by signing up to their email list. So the cost of the trimmer is $159 is $34.

I don't think that is that bad for a local plug and local warranty.

I agree Amazon has excellent after sales support.

Sorry, to clarify - it's USD 68.32 (nominally) shipped to Australia from Amazon US, or about AUD 92.30. Agree that local plug is important for these things, but there's still quite a bit of markup for shaver shop.

        • @josho9: Like a really great electric pencil sharpener that's US$30 on Amazon but here it's A$250+. They must have fairies using gold to do the 240V conversion and the plug. The local warranty is vastly inferior too.

        • @Daabido: If you're going to make claims like that, provide a link.

        • $10 shipping though?

          Also its 92 AUD.

Also the US plug is fine.

  • Could you use a freight forwarder such as shipitto?

    • Yes I'm looking into it at the moment.

  • I don't know anything about the different Wahl models, but it seems to be available on Ebay if you are happy to buy from offshore.

    • Its hard to find a reputable shop though and unfortunately its a lot more expensive.

  • Have you thought about a mail forwarder? It could be cheaper than full AUD price.

    • Yes but not enough to make the fuss worth it.

In the end I purchased it during the 20% ebay sale.
