Fastest Mobile Change of Ownership

TL;DR- I'd like suggestions for the fastest way to transfer a mobile number to someone else.

BACKSTORY-

I currently have an Optus account with two mobile services (mine and my wife's), both on contracts which are about to end.

The phones are fine, so I'm looking at moving both the numbers to Belong (I like the data bank, and data gifting), but I want to transfer the number she uses to her name.

Belong don't do a Change of Ownership. Optus say it'll take 10 business days. If I use them as an interim, Telstra say it'll take 7 business days. Vodafone just kinda shrugs.

I'm happy to port the number to a prepaid service in the interim, if they can do a quicker change of ownership.

Does the brains trust have any experience of fast Changes of Ownership, or any suggestions for a way to speed it up?

Just change them with Optus and wait up to 10 days. Really not worth moving it around to save a day or two in ownership changes.

Are you really in that much of a rush? I mean the contracts haven't ended yet

both on contracts which are about to end.

So start the change of ownership NOW and it'll be all done by the time the contracts are up.

As an ex telco employee I'd advise just doing the Change of Ownership (CHOWN) order with Optus although not sure why they are saying 10 business days as I could usually do it in store within a few minutes however I am sure they would be using a different system.

Porting the number and then forcing a CHOWN order immediately can cause errors and have to be referred to back of house.

My last CHOWN experience with Optus took, no kidding, from the start of Feb to the end of May to sort out. Feb being the date I actually received the TIO complaint callback and got escalated to one of the excellent Aussie CSOs higher up who knew what he was doing. There was two separate billing systems, online CHOWN submissions being received and not actioned, and a whole array of problems…

Hopefully you don't have the same experience! But I'd definitely recommend CHOWN through Optus first. Alternately, setup a Belong port request in HER name, and then (given Belong don't do ownership changes) just specify that it's her name on this account, not yours. If you just explain to the relevant Belong rep that it's supposed to be her phone, I don't see how they'd care, especially on a prepaid or monthly service. If it's all online, then a first name change might not even get flagged at all.

Once she's sorted, port your phone out separately, to a separate account, ensuring you don't have any links to your wife's online account etc.

  • Open two accounts with Belong, one under each person's name, and port each number out to their respective Belong accounts using the Optus account number. For post-paid accounts, only the account number is required. A matching date of birth is only required when porting from pre-paid, or when porting post-paid within the same network (or, at least that is the case for Optus to Optus network ports).

  • Vodafone, they will do in 30 minutes.

Port to Vodafone & then call 1555.

Done it myself twice. Best possible way.

    Cheers
