POURED

There a few good laptop deals on GraysOnline today. I've picked up three relatively high end systems that cost under $1000.

Lenovo YOGA 720, 12.5 inch Touchscreen $719.20

Intel Core i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz, 2 Core(s)
8GB RAM
256GB SSD
12.5-inch (1920×1080) Screen, Touchscreen Enabled
QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter, Wireless
Intel, HD Graphics 620
Supports Lenovo Stylus Pen

Retails over $1800 last year. Suitable for school / uni and very portable. This is the previous generation and has been superseded by a 8th gen Intel, but this costs less than half the price of a new unit.

Lenovo YOGA 520, 14 inch Touchscreen $799.20

Intel Core i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz, 4 Core(s)
8GB RAM
128GB NVMe SSD
14-inch (1920×1080) Screen, Touchscreen Enabled
QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter, Wireless
Intel, UHD Graphics 620
Intel, Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
USB Port (2), USB Type-C Port (1), HDMI Port (Standard)

This is the current generation version with a quad core Intel 8th gen CPU. There are only 7 units left at time of posting.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Detachable Windows Pro Tablet, WWAN, Keyboard and Stylus Accessory- $791.20

6th Generation Intel Core m5-6Y57 Processor (4MB Cache, 1.10GHz)
8GB RAM
256GB SSD Hard Drive
12-inc (2160 x 1440), Touchscreen
Intel® HD Graphics
HD Audio
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WWAN
Webcam
microSD Card Reader
USB Port (1), Display Port (Mini), Nano SIM Slot
Windows 10 Professional
Accessories Included: Detachable Keyboard, Stylus, AC Adapter

This business focused two-in-one device is basically the bees knees of Surface Pro or Surface Go alternative. A great choice for people looking to work on the go but too poor to afford buying Surface and all it's pricey accessories.

It comes with a detachable keyboard, the Pen and also has a SIM slot and it's also specified it has WWAN (so there's a chance this might be an LTE enabled device). Businesswear and Soy Latte's not included.

You don't need an i7 processor when there is not a dedicated GPU, it's a waste of money.

    • Yeah, that's not true. There are plenty of applications that are CPU intensive while being comparatively light on GPU usage. Plus this is an ULV processor, so it isn't really overkill for anything above basic browsing.

Not to mention the availability of eGPUs these days.

      • -2

Try to be more specific, what applications are you talking about? There are thousands.

But let's think of someone who wants to do video editing which requires a i7 processor but also a dedicated GPU!

And I'm talking about wasted money on a i7 processor instead of a cheaper and well performing i5.

eGPUs, you're totally off topic and suggesting people to waste their money based on your wrong opinion.

eGPUs are expensive, you talk about not overkill CPUs but you add an eGPU which will consume extra energy, it adds an extra hardware to your computer, they're still not 100% compatible with all laptops so you need to do your research before buying one, why I should waste my money on an external box while I can buy a laptop with a dedicated GPU?

You talk about high end systems which makes no sense since you have a powerful and expensive CPU but a GPU good for watching videos.
Your opinion and your money anyways.

A core i7 is just a brand name anyway that Intel uses to differentiate CPU tiers. On desktops at least, a Core i5 differed from Core i7 in that it had hyperthreading disabled.

Core i5 / i7 on mobile chipsets (Kaby Lake and older) has almost no differences, so the tier difference is quite blurred.

All part of Intel's marketing to get you to believe there is a huge difference between a i5 and a 7 (not always true).

        • -2

@scrimshaw: That's the point, Intel push laptop manufacturers sell the i7 when there is no need of it also it's more expensive.

        • +1

Your specific use case (editing video) is not one that many business notebook users spend much time on.
You would be better off buying a desktop.
If you have large excel spreadsheets, are compiling code or other CPU intensive activities, this CPU would be useful. And I guess if it is similar in price to an i5, why not?

        • -2

@mskeggs: Since hyper-treading was mentioned and the i7 is specific to this (no other reason) then we must talk about video editing.
An i5 (or a similar AMD) is all a laptop needs, also there are professionals who use expensive (not hi end like this one) laptops for video editing hence there is a specific requirement for a more expensive i7 CPU.

        • @dealhunt:
          Then see part two:
"And I guess if it is similar in price to an i5, why not?"

Is there a better priced i5 version to make that preferable? If there is, post it, it would be a good deal.

        • -1

@mskeggs: Go back to my previous comment where I say that Intel push laptop makers install the more expensive i7 when it's not needed.

  • The X1 listing doesn't say anything about 4G/LTE, maybe it was removed?

    • +2

      It does mention a

USB Port (1), Display Port (Mini), Nano SIM Slot.

      and it also lists

      "Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WWAN"

WWAN is basically cellular network. Not sure how accurate this listing is though

    • Or is it the 4th Gen X1? (4G)

Edit: my bad, didn't realise this was the tablet. No such thing as 4th Gen.

Bought two of Grays refurbished in previous deals.

    Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKB 13.3" ($959.20 inc. 20% off)
    i7-8550u
    16GB RAM
    256GB SSD

    Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKB 13.3" ($666.75 inc. 25% off)
    i7-7500u
    16GB RAM
    256GB SSD

Bought the 8th gen for myself and it came flawless. 7th gen for a relative which came with slight wear on the rubber feet, and a minor scratch on the underside.
Both laptops came inclusive of the Lenovo Active Pen 2, which was not listed on either listing.
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and have had no issues.

    • Thanks, decided to take a punt. 1599 before discount is great deal with Yoga 920 with 16GB,FHD,i7 8550

Ended up with discount code 20% off, 1% cashback, and 31,980 flybuy points (collect 20x ebay points) which is around $159?

    • Yeah, I bought one too in a previous deal.

      Lenovo Yoga 720-15IKB ($1004 incl. 25% off)
      15" 4K UHD touchscreen
      i7-7700HQ (quad core)
      16GB RAM
      512GB SSD
      1050GTX GPU
      Fingerprint Scanner

Mine was flawless too, even packaging looked new. No mention of the pen. Opened all the packaging with my fingers crossed… No pen, lol. Can't win them all.

      • Got mine on Friday. Apart from the serial no. being scratched out and 1 minor scratch, machine was near new.

Came with pen but finding it hard to get the obscure button batteries.

Overall a retail 2249 machine for 1100 is a steal.

Graysonline is joke, sent faulty lenovo tablets to buyers. Avoid at any cost otherwise just waste your time.

    • +2

Most come with a 1 year warranty. I have returned two under that warranty (one with incorrect specs and one with a faulty trackpad) no issues. Refund was quick and free postage back.

  • Yep, Grays sure are a joke. Don't be surprised if they cancel your order or send you something with different specs. They have had some good deals on refurbished and unwanted Lenovo stock in the past and you can get lucky, I have seen much better deals than these on their store - all depends on their stock and the coupons that are available at the time.

  • Thinking of a Yoga 920, any feedback?

  • Prices have just been jacked with the new 20% off sale…
