Pioneer 1606C Component Speakers (Car Audio) $59 C&C @ JB Hi-Fi

510

12pm: Stock only remains at Campbelltown NSW & Hervey Bay, Rockhampton Stockland & Townsville Home QLD

Normally about $200 original RRP, on sale for about $140 regularly, and cheapest online I think is currently $80.
So a deal no matter what way you look at it.

I could rant and rave about these things, but really, they're just "Darn Good".

I'm a light-audiophile, so I could type and type about small details, but in reality, there's no way to describe sound quality.
Everyone's ears are different.

To me, they're rich, full, and extremely mellow on the tweeters.
People claim they're a squeaky tweeter, but I feel the complete opposite, as I'm very treble sensitive, and these didn't bother me at all.
I also found their "dual density spider" really did help keep the bass present at low powers, while stopping them from distorting once I added an amp and over-drove them for testing.

If anyone else is a fan, I used Lindsey Sitrling's album as my main test tracks, and the violin has never been so real (I also saw her live).
Also, in the track 'Crystallize', where she mixes classical violin with dubstep, I was SUPER impressed with how the mids handled the 'wub wub' while not losing the Violins clarity and mid resonance.

I bought 3 sets.

Anecdotally, People love the next model up.
There are 10's of videos on youtube with people installing these exact speakers, expecting a budget install from these cheaper models.
The tldr of all those videos is "50% the price, 90% the quality!"

If you need some 6.5" splits, these are hard to pass up.

My car has nowhere to put the tweeters. Unless I mounted them somewhere. What would the sound be like not utilising the tweeters?

    • +8

      Balls.

Most people will use adhesive and put them on the little triangle that covers the door mirror screws.
Or up on the A pillar.
Or, if the car is cheap (or has parts easily accessible) people will drill a hole with a small hole saw and use the flush mount for the tweeters.

    • You need someone who installs the kit.

    • +10

Install without mounting, and hold next to your ear for maximum treble

      • +13

If a cop sees this you'll be in real treble.

        • +17

          That's a bassless claim

        • +4

          Don't amplify the problem

        • +4

That's nothing to tweet about. #notweeter

      • +6

WHAT?! YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEAK UP! I HAVE INSTANT TINNITUS!

        :P

    • +1

You'd be better off just buying a traditional coaxial speaker if you don't feel comfortable mountings tweeter in a good position.

  • Very limited stock. non available in Brisbane or Darwin

    • +1

      That was quick!
I puchased 1 pair in store last night in Brisbane, and another 2 for delivery in the early hours of this morning (also in Brisbane).

Perhaps I snagged the last Brisbane sets :(
At 5.30pm last night Loganholme was showing 2 pairs, and Capalaba was showing 1.
a few of the 'HOME' stores had some.
      Maybe worth a phone call?
Or at that price, I'd even take the sound-board model, honestly.

They had PILES of stock before this price drop.

        Launceston, Hobart TAS

      • Why do you need three sets?

        • 3 cars.

        • Generally better audio quality compared to all in one speakers.
But you need to judge by how much money you want to spend.

  • Damn. No stock in SA.

    • +1

If you're actually keen, ask if they have one in the sound board (every store I visited did).
I'm sure you'd get them for a flat $50 for the 'demo pair'.

If you can't tell, I'm a little blown away by these :)

      • I wouldn't touch any second hand demo speakers…. Amps or HU OK.

      • I never buy demo anything, and even second hand I'm always iffy unless the price is absolutely right.

        • I always do.
Store still gives you full warranty.
It guarantees I don't get a lemon out of the box.
          And it's MUCH cheaper.

I don't see the down side.

        • +1

          @MasterScythe:
Speakers degrade easily, and often are flogged in stores, May not in warranty period, but personally I don't wanna have to pull out one again… The other thing is they'll just claim you are at fault if they blow…

  • Pioneer website states 60W RMS opposed to 175W RMS on JB's website.
would love a pair but only Rouse Hill and Campbelltown have stock in NSW

    • +1

Good catch, but anyone who cares about numbers like that are looking at sensitivity and Impedance to make an informed decision.
Most people will power this off a head unit (12W RMS) or a cheap amp (50~100w x 4 RMS).
So long as it's not being used in sound comps, 100W won't blow these.

  • Is there a resource I can use to determine if these will fit a 2012 Hyundai ix35?
Concerned about the depth of the doors.

    • Probably will need to check Hyundai forums… or pop off your door skins and have a look. You can use spacers but will also need to ensure it clears the grills. Also check if the factory cutouts will take 6.5". I have some nice 6.5" JL Audio splits from my previous car that are sitting unused because my current car only takes 5.5" and it's a PITA to fit 6.5" (need to make custom pods).

    • The large band woofers have small magnet (and power) so they should fit.
But if I were to update my car's fitted speakers, I would spend $50-100 more and buy a much better quality.
Check these from Amazon and scroll down the page for comparison with similar and better choices.

      • People confuse quality with harsh clarity.
NEVER buy a speaker based on reviews, you HAVE to listen to them.

literally every option there for example, I have demo'd and find bright. the JBL, and Focals can bite me.
Alpine Type S, R and X are by far the worst for treble harshness. (funny, that list is in order of price\quality, but IMO, reverse for clairty when not doing SPL comps).
Though, as I said, everyones ears vary.

I just hold mine in high regard, as I spent 3 years legally blind, and got into professional sound tuning as my ears became, as they say "golden ears".

These are far from 'the best' but even at their original $1xx price range, I'm yet to find something even close in quality.

DBDrive and the upper end of Phoenix Gold certainly comes close though!

        • +2

For $59 I am happy to take a punt, if they will fit.

        • I originally focals really harsh as well however on most of them on the actual crossover there's a physical switch for -3db for the tweeter you can flick which tames them. Although as with all aftermarket speakers eq'ing them for your environment will do wonders.
Personally my low cost favorites are morels. They're a bit more expensive than these but i'd probably just save up and get them. Nowadays stock speakers in new cars aren't too bad and they'll be tuned for the car so buying these could possibly be a downgrade.

        • @Clinton:

Personally my low cost favorites are morels.

A man after my own heart!

Cheapest you'll get any of their decent ones though (I say Maximo is where you start) you're already at $160 minimum.
I've done SO MANY morel installs with mates. They're just smooth as silk right out of the box.

Don't handle anything too heavy well though. Black Metal or Thrash Metal they tend to get a little bit unsure of themselves.

        • +1

I've found more recent type rs pleasent. At least compared to a decade ago… So much so I'm getting back into it with a type r system. Ain't no DLS ultimate/Boston Z though :(

        • @MasterScythe:

Yeah my first speakers were morel maximo 6's. Awesome speaker and even off a shit amp they ran well and didn't require much fiddling. At the time they were $180 for me but i think they've upped the price now. Definitely worth saving for. And you're right they didn't require any fiddling. I've also heard tempo's and they sounded great too. I'm currently running German Maestro's and loving them.
I hear good things about getting raw drivers but think my audio journey ends here. Hopefully it does and i don't end up getting rainbows or utopias.

Great deal, nothing in Victoria though

  • +3

Must resist… Yeah I'll pass even though the OzBargain motto is "Buy now, think later".

  • Good deal but no stock in Sydney city limits. Only Campbelltown store got stocks.

  • what do you actually get with this?

    • Doesn't matter. Just buy it.

  • Damn, need to replace dodgy speakers in my car and got excited for this - then saw there's none in VIC!

OP, you seem like you know your car audio - any alternative 6 1/2" component sets you recommend for good value?

    • +1

You'll be struggling to find anything near this price.

Alpine Type S are amongst the better 'low' end. I didn't mind the Sony equivalent at JB (vomits a little).

      Edit:or just purchase elsewhere :)

    • +2

      I do.
Honestly, go trial some KICKER speakers.

To fend off the haters I'll start with the CONS.
      1. Yes, they're not the most 'true to recording' speaker.
      2. I know, the brand is known more for 'entry level subs'
      3. Yes, their power handling seems oddly low.

      However, here's the pros.

      1. Most of their range is at 92db sensitivity, so they're loud, even on head unit power.
      2. Their CS6504 range has silk dome tweeters, which really make the harshness calm the hell down.
      3. The CS654 (not 6504) is by far the best shallow mount speaker I've heard.

And while, it's not on sale right now, they come down to about $70 on the quarterly "30% off kicker" sales JB do.

+1 for your excellent grammar (their / they're) and cheers for the tip :P

      • Great comment, thanks for the detailed write up. Will definitely do a demo sometime soon and will keep these in mind.

  • Check out ma vl turbo bro

  • Any one know if there's stock at chadstone and/or southland?

  • I have these installed in my car for the last month - very happy with them for the price

  • Hey OP would you recommend any other speakers on sale at JB?

  • -1

These will be fully sick with my tornado subwoofers. Can't wait until Friday night to go lapping in ipswich now.

  • i actually paid $110 for these on sale.
They definitely are an upgrade on your stock speakers. if your not an audiophile, then for $60 its a steal

  • They also had some cheap head units too but sadly expired :(
