Salary Sacrifice a phone when it is on a plan

Hi All,

I want to salary sacrifice a mobile phone because it works out to be like a 40% discount.
However, I have been told by Optus and Telstra that they can't give me a receipt for the phone because it is on a plan. Without the receipt for the phone, I am not able to salary sacrifice.

Just wondering has anyone been able to salary sacrifice for a mobile phone on a plan? What is the trick to do this?

  • Salary sacrifice for a mobile phone on a plan? never heard that before? is your work allow this?
Perhaps, outright phone, but not a plan.

Thats correct, as you haven't really 'paid' for the phone until the end of the contract.

Nope, buy it outright and signup to a cheaper BYO plan.

  • Monthly invoice OK?

Otherwise, perhaps try asking for an 'invoice' or 'statement' for insurance purposes - where your 'insurer' is asking for a full value record that proves you have the phone (ignoring any Optus Protect stuff if you have it).

    • Monthly invoice OK?

The monthly invoice is for the phone, if for phone service.

The ATO claim the OP wants only allowed for the phone to be claimed.

I'm not sure why you would sacrifice a phone, which deity are you attempting to appease?

  • The majority of smartphones are inexpensive. The only smartphone worth all the extra paperwork is iPhone X or soon to be released model.

    • no iphone is worth any extra anything

    • Glad to hear such one sided insistence from both sides that their device is the only one worth anything, really super stuff.

  • I am actually after the iPhone X. Some of the Optus plans are almost the same price as buying it outright.
Also, I want global roaming data to be included and none of the BYO plans have that. But I am not getting a plan and saying good bye to a $700 discount. If only I can have it both way.

I am sorry to hear that.

  • Your best option is to wait until JBHIFI have another one of those deals where you sign up to $49 a month plan and get $XXX off an outright phone purchase. As the invoice will show the full amount (before the discount) and in theory you could cough salary sacrifice the full amount…

Or buy off a 20% off ebay sales, where the invoice shows the full amount…

But of course you should always check with your accountant.
