Anybody tried the fancy new video express booths. They look good and the movie comes out in a sturdier case but it really takes the gloss off when you realise you can’t return it to an older style kiosk. Sort of defeats the business model which was supposed to be rent from anywhere and return to anywhere.

I agree! I just don't know how they even make money!
What, renting and returning dvds by post? I think a kiosk at the shop you frequent is handier!
While that might be true, I think it's marginal depending on who's doing the renting and how often they go to the post office. You can always return in-bulk once every month, and you still receive the movies in the post (so don't need to go to the post office) - and you can browse and order at home.
And in any case - this was literal decades ago. Even if it's comparable or even marginally better.. that doesn't say much about the kiosk model.
Personally, I don't think I've been to a post office (except for cashing a check or picking up an undelivered package) for almost 2 years. However I see a video ezy booth multiple times a week outside my local Woolworths
why bother with renting movies for $$$
you pay for your internet, download the movies.
or get netflix, don't have to leave your house, and can watch 5 min of every movie until you find one you like.
Yeah. I still use it whenever free codes pop up here.
The video ezy kiosks tend to have new releases that aren’t yet available on Netflix or Stan, so do actually hit a gap in the market. I also find that being able to swing by to pick it up when I want is easy as it’s at like four of my local supermarkets.
But back to OP, I never used the older version, so don’t know how flimsy the cases were, but the new ones are great.
Had a kiosk at my local shopping centre and I really wanted to start using it…. Went back, its gone and possibly relocated to the next suburb with a small row of low foot-traffic shops. If it stayed in the large shopping centre it would be extremely convenient, now I couldn't care…. :(
I can't help but think that this business model is still already obsolete to Netflix's original business model. It's like they're playing catch up to Netflix of a decade ago.
