Thoughts on Using Google Home Mini as a Permanent Dedicated PC Speaker and Maybe Even Mic

So I am setting up my new PC step by step and wondering how a Google Home Mini would do as a PC speaker or even mic if it is possible to do so.

I think it would eliminate the need for a dedicated speaker and maybe even save on power usage which is always a great thing. Plus the assistant functionality is awesome. Anybody do this or have tried using it as a dedicated speaker for a desktop or PC/laptop.

My current PC has some really bad in built speakers HP Compaq 8200 so will be using headphones for now until I figure out a speaker situation. Alternatively any cheap recommendations on speakers.. don't need much just better than this prebuilt mono sounding ones. Probably only need 2.1 even not 5.1 as I have no space for it to setup but taking any recommendations. Max speaker budget is probably $50 for now $100 if it has something special. Won't be blowing them too loud just some clear simple stuff.

Honestly if I could use my tablet or phone as speakers I would since they have great sound especially the tablet.

Have you tried Googling? Or, maybe asking your Google Home Mini?

The Home Mini is probably worth more than your PC.

  • if it is possible to do so

    Not without modifying the hardware.

  • Apparently you can, but because it's either Wifi or Bluetooth(?) there's a bit of lag so it'll desync from videos and stuff.

    Personally I prefer headphones anyway.

For $50 you can get decent 2.1 speakers as a safe bet. I have logitech z213(got it for $37 from officeworks) and the voulme control comes with headphone output when you need to use them.

Just buy some headphones for goodness sake.

The G Home Mini has almost no bass and it's also a mono speaker. I'm not sure you'd want to listen to it for an extended period of time.

Good for listening to podcasts but not great for music.

    • This; if you want to listen to music, get proper speakers (as someone who has a GHM)
