I guess everyone is getting on the subscription model bandwagon.

What does the average ozbargain”er think?

Really not liking this subscription model bandwagon. Consumer market turning into a continous ongoing wallet drain more and more.

    • +6

      Agreed!!!

A continuous drain, another device to:

      -make comparing prices impractical

-encourage loyalty avoiding any comparison of prices,

-spending incentive - a device which most consumers fail to grasp because they believe themselves to be rational decision makers despite mountains of evidence saying otherwise

I think they would need to sweeten the honeypot a bit more for me to jump into it. I tend to go to the market to shop for my fruit and vegetables - probably what they are trying to combat. I did buy the cherries when they were 100X the points at Coles. I contribute to the Coles Circle site and this move doesn't surprise me given the questions we have been getting lately.

    • +6

Maybe if they throw in mini plastic versions of common grocery items? :D

  • +2

Not liking it, and yet another reason for me to avoid Coles / Woolies.

Having said that, the strategy is quite interesting and is obviously directly targeted against Amazon. Even in the UK (where a lot of the Coles / Woolies execs have previous experience) this strategy is not common as far as I can see.

  • I don't know if I prefer Coles paying me the $99 per year up front or if
I should opt for the income stream of $10 per month. lol

I'm a Flybuys min member so wouldn't benefit me at all. They keep trying to entice me with X points for $50x4. One time they relented and offered 3000 points for $50 spend so I bought pantry stuff with it and will redeem the points for Opal credit. The next week they tried to up it to 3600 points for $60. Hahaha no way, back to ignoring you, Coles.

  • Free delivery makes it better than woollies delivery saver, if I remember correctly the Woolworths one brings the free delivery threshold to $100

Despite my "eh it's not a big deal" in the eBay Plus thread, I think in principle I dislike these programs because they create lock-in effects which practically decrease competition for the consumer.

Having said that, these effects are similar to any loyalty program (even free ones), though I'm willing to bet the sunk cost fallacy will make the perceived difference to consumers seem larger, and so create more of an anti-competitive effect.

Free delivery on orders of what value?

I spend $50 per week so I visit the store.

I do have a Coles Mastercard which offers free delivery on orders over $100 but I don't use it.

    • +1

      $50 free shipping threshold

  • Free Delivery is good.

  • will you still be able to make purchases with egift cards? double 5% discounts?

    Video streaming (source unknown)

The linked page says it’s via MuviNow

  • Only really makes any sense for someone making large orders online. Frankly for most I can't see the benefit in givine coles money to then give them more money.

My local fruit market is 300% cheaper than Coles and you don't need membership and they give you free plastic bags.

  • +1

    err, membership is crap.

You can get better flybuys point deals by having a secondary card which you only use when you get good offers. For example, recently I got, spend $50 for 4 weeks to get $50. Thats 25% off and it doesn't cost me $99 to receive it.

if anyone here actually signs up for this (unless you constantly use delivery) then hand back your ozbargain licence

  • No use to me unfortunately. 10x points on everything would have to happen to make me consider it.

10x points on fresh produce and meat - I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Aldi
Free Delivery over $50 - I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Aldi
Unlimited video streaming on the website MuviNow - I already have access to Netflix, Stan and Foxtel Go
Discounted cinema and theme park tickets - Already have access to these through Telstra Thanks, Optus Perks, Choovie and Entertainment Book

    Try harder Coles.

  • I find the fresh produce at my Coles (or Woolies) is not so fresh, so I shop at markets.
They may get my attention if MuviNow becomes a Netflix-contender. but without that- No deal

    • Depends exactly what you get with MuviNow. At the moment they have pay-to-view latest releases that Netflix and other SVOD services won't have a crack at until later (without resorting to VPN, I mean). If new releases are included in the subscription, that'd almost be worth it for some… $99 per year to be able to watch new release movies before they're more broadly available.

So you have to spend $200 on fresh produce / meat before you break even.

Plus this is the stuff you really want to pick yourself rather than trusting someone else to pick the best dates and best looking items, so delivery is not such a great idea.

    I'll pass.

    • "So you have to spend $200 on fresh produce / meat before you break even."

You mean $2000 right? I can do $200 a week LOL.

      • If its 10 x points of fresh produce then a $200 spend should get you 2,000 points. Which is worth $10 - hence the break even.

        Unless my maths is wrong?

        • Gotcha. Sorry for some reason I had the annual price in my head and was going by $99.

      • The way I see it, you need to spend $200 per month / $50 per week on fresh produce / meat to break even on the $10 a month plan. If you are on the $99 a year plan, then you need to spend $166.67 a month / $41.67 per week on fresh produce / meat a month to break even. Hopefully that maths is better.

  • My partner got invited to trial this for 2 months.Only perk which appealed to me is the $80 3-day Gold Coast Theme Park tickets.
