Help Required to Choose a NBN Router under $200

Hi Ozb's,

I have been using the router provided by Belong till now which has been working fine. However i have recently moved over to a different provider(mates) and i thought i could hack the existing router to work but alas its firmware is locked by Belong and i am unable to reset it.

Now i need to get a new router asap. My budget is <200$.

I am on the NBN50 Plan and my main requirement is for it to have decent coverage ( 20 squares house) and speed. We use it mainly for work and streaming content (Non-HD) to tv.
I dont play a lot of games and at most we would have 3 devices connected to wifi. Very average to low internet usage ( My last month i used 100GB bandwidth and usually average in this range).

Address is serviced by nbn™ Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology.

I am looking to buy something and keep it for as along as it lasts.

From what i have read i can see that these routers have been recommended. however they are over my budget.

Netgear Nighthawk D7000 ~~ $259
ASUS DSL-AC68U Dual-Band Wireless AC1900 VDSL / ADSL2+ ~~ $278

Can you please suggest alternates?

Thanks a lot.

  • TPLink C2300 or C3150 are decent alternatives.

    • C3150 is retailing at more than 250$ now. Unless i can find a deal in the next few hours, its not an option for me. EBGames doesnt seem to have stock. OWS and JB does not have this model so no price match.

I've seen the C3150 on sale for 199 etc on ebay. I think I got mine for 219 or so a while ago.

        • Its not there anymore. The best i can get is around 250$ :-(. Most ebay sellers with PARKA code have increased the prices to match the sale.

If you're on FTTP you just need a router so you don't need the Asus DSL you can use the Asus RT-AC68U which has been $140 to $160 in recent times.

      • Thanks. The TP-Link D9 doesnt seem to have the WAN port. Will this work for FTTP NBN?

        • LAN4 is the WAN port so no problem there. You won't need the ADSL modem functionality obviously.

Great value router which has been a favourite on OzB and Whirlpool for years. The range on the Asus is the best of these AC1900 routers though so if you have any doubts about coverage in your place, it's worth stumping up the extra cash. The router software is very good too.

  • TP-Link VR600? Pretty sure it's NBN compliant (so long as you get the v2 model) and it regularly goes for something like $150 or even almost $100 these days.

It's also a modem-router, which even if you don't need, means you have that back-up capability.

  • i would get 2 of unifi ap ac lite ($116.85 on ebay with penny5) and connect to the existing router

    • I dont have an existing router. Its firmware is belongs custom firmware and does not allow me to change the PPOE settings.

  • I have ordered the Asus RT-AC68U based on your suggestions from ebay. I guess i can price match if the price goes down .

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
