Telstra have a unlimited data plan for their mobile phones at $200.

Is it possible to put the sim in a 4G modem of some sort and use this as my main connection for my home?

Yup but i only have ADSL available where I am and NBN is too far into the future.
One would assume then that you are out in the boonies meaning you might only get Wireless NBN or satellite (eventually). In which case you might be better off staying with ADSL as long as you can. Wireless NBN is great when all the kids are at school but pretty sad when everyone piles onto the tower. For e.g. I am getting 45Mbps here today, which I am quite happy with. On the weekend however it did not get above 3Mbps. The really crappy bit is that have installed a node point about 1000 meter from my place but wont hook me up because I am already on wireless.
Is that cable or ADSL2+? If it's cable then not all households can get it. If it's the latter then it's much slower than 4G.
Our Unlimited NBN service
- peaking at 100 Mb/Sec (nominal) - costs only $60 / mon
from Singapore-based "MyRepublic"
I know the price has risen & new accounts may not get same 100 Mb/Sec, but
it proves my long-held belief, that Telstra won't even try to compete.

Why can't Aussie Telstra - who's (at least once) invested $1 Billion in Asia,
without much joy, in the end - just compete, here in AU, for a change?
Why do we have to do business with more economical overseas providers?
Why don't our own companies + stay get as sharp, smart & economical
as non-Aussies… like MyRepublic, MyNetFone, etc.?
AU still seems a Land of Dummies to the World, even outside out Telco mkt:
AU's BANNED use of Nuclear Energy here(!); even as Qld's coal-miners get
Black Lung disease AU Gov't expands its Coal exporting seaport, so more
Aussies will suffer from work in coal-mines here, not to mention folks
who live near any of AU's toxic Coal Power Stations.
—- back to topic
Telstra is what many/most Aussies choose FIRST - due to advertising,
not cost-effectiveness.
Sadly, after signing a 24-month Lock-In contract, they then realise
they're paying WAY too much, for way too little…
Remember all the folks who bought "500 MB / mon." Internet plans with
(was it $0.50 / over-quota MB, excess fee). A neighbor once got a bill
for $1,200 for ONE MONTH's usage, thanks to Telstra (not!).
Is this how such companies grew so hungry & large in AU?
I seem to recall a more subtle marketing tactic: Didn't Telstra once
offer non-profit organisations ~$2,000 in exchange for putting one
of their experts on their board or committee?
Do you think that expertise was used to find -competitive- offers for
the organisation's telecommunication requirements? I doubt it.
Any1 have direct experience with such "deals"…?
You seem to have neglected to answer the OP's question -
Is it possible to put the sim in a 4G modem of some sort and use this as my main connection for my home?
Having had to compete - eg, while at SA's Mawson Lakes - for bandwidth, eg, with lotsa nearby UniSA student residences, I'd say it would depend
on how many other "big Internet users" he'd be sharing with.
Too many => Slow data rates
Not so many => Faster rates
Anything's possible …but:
what's desirable? is the Q.
@IVI:
Just want to remind folks that posts that are "voted down"
(eg, for reminding newbies of Telstra's past/pres. practices)
can still be displayed, albeit in grey fonts, with a change
of an OzB setting.
$200 a month for home internet? What's your monthly usage?
All allowances: For Personal use in a smartphone only. FairPlay Policy applies.
"FairPlay"
https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…
So basically Telstra can still slow, suspend or cancel your service at any time without notice.
The only reference I could find to the amount of data for the fairplay policy (Pg14) was for Next G PC Packs(…whatever they are). In that it says they consider more than 12GB a month as excessive!
They deliberately keep it as vague as possible - gives them more discretion when they decide to mess with people.
That's Telstra for you…
"Past is Prologue"
Read my "greyed" post for examples of "Past" Telstra conduct, that
its competitors are not - to their credit - known to be adopting,
AFAIK.
PS I wonder if anyone with an "unlimited" account
has taken Telstra to TIO, ie, after being dropped
for exceeding a "fuzzy" (unspecified) Quota…?
If not, someone should, IMO.
You could possibly get a data sharing sim for an extra $5/month to do that? Need to ask Telstra to confirm.
https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/mobile-…
Monthly Data (domestic)
All data is not shareable and expires at the end of the month.
Data is for personal use in a smartphone and for use in Australia.
Our FairPlay policy applies.
when they mean shareable, do they mean between mobiles on the same account tho? sharing sim seems to be different?
"You can’t share the mobile data between other planson the same account."
I think the key part was this:
Data is for personal use in a smartphone
Would running that much data through your phone burn out the radio faster? (just curious)
(Edit, just read the part about putting the SIM into a modem….d'oh..)
Wont work in a Modem… its for use in a smartphone only and telstra will detect its in a modem and shut it down.
So, can a telco tell if you're using the phone as an Access Point,
to pass date thru to PC, iOS devices, etc.
If Telstra bars that kind of use, TIO should bar that Contract term, IMO,
OR - at least - ban use of the word "unlimited" in marketing that service.
Only in works of Fiction can one use a word
to mean anything you want it to mean. ;~)
Nope. Look it up and you'll see people complaining about the SIM only working in a smartphone.
million ways around sim only working in a smartphone, just pick up a cheap android phone and use wifi hotpsot, better still get a tplink mr3220 router and load rooter on it and you can set it up like a normal (ish) network
Until Telstra realizes you're using a tonne of data and cuts you off under their "Fairplay policy". It's BS, but apparently no one's (looking at you, ACCC) has said that that's BS yet in a way that matters.
Don't put us off-the-track with an ACCC ref.
It's Free & Effective to get TIO on Telstra's case, IMO.
(We've had only good responses / decisions from TIO.)
Signed up for the Telstra $39 unlimited calls / 20gb data plan with $200 JBHifi gift card. Intend to set my phone as a wifi Hotspot for running smart TV / youtube ect when i get home. If Telstra disconnects us…thanks for the $200 gift card!
Partner has 23gb data with Kogan, cant see the need paying for Wifi.
Data can only be used in smartphone. If you try put it in a MBB, it may work in the short term, but they will cut you off 100%.
We use an old S7 with a permanent hotspot as our home wifi. It's always plugged in on charge.
On an Optus data plan 160g per month. Works well for us as we are not huge users of data. Had no issues using a phone as a modem.
If you have a specified Quota, they CAN'T play the Telstra "Fair Play" game.
Looks like you've paid for 160 GB, and they can't "Telstra you" for using what you paid for. ;~)
Presumably yes but you realise that their unmetered broadband is $129 right? I guess you cannot get that but just in case you didn't know.
