Suggestions for New Black and White Laser Printer for Home Use

We need a new printer as the old colour Epson is starting to print out mixed colours and streaks. Old.

Looking at purchasing a cost-effective Laser printer. Any suggestions? We can keep the old printer for drafts till the remaining ink cartridges are used.

What is a good brand and also what is the most cost effective to run? Assume we only have to worry about toner.

To be used for sons assignments and our odd printing of letters.

Don't have very much desk space so would be good if compact.

Would probably prefer buying from a BM store. For warranty purposes.

Don't even know what something like these costs.

Thanking you all in advance.

Try searching “laser printer” on google/eBay/Amazon, you may have more success…

  • Will do. Just thought if someone recently went through the process it would save alot of time. Avoiding a dud printer. Was thinking HP. Assume their home versions are ok.

Brother HL-1110 is what you want its the probably the cheapest you can get, but toner is expensive, office works has them for 75$
only usb, no wifi or network connected but it does the job and its small/compact, ive just hit 500 pages but havnt run out yet of toner.

When you get a message the toner has run out , watch the youtube vid on this link and you can get even more out of the toner and instructions on how to refill.. they offer you refill kits (uk based but you might be able to find cheaper in Australia)

  • I've used the cheap Brother and Fuji Xerox printers from Officeworks
The included toner only lasts approx 500 pages or so but then it's crazy expensive for the replacement toners (which do 2500 pages) - maybe 2-3x the original price of the printer
Also factor in a replacement drum (every 10,000 - 25,000 pages depending on printer)

In terms of print quality no issues; mostly printing text

Have tried a cheap $25 ebay toner in the Fuji but found the print quality was rubbish, and had to override the warnings that the toner was not genuine

    • Used cheap ebay toner in our Fuji… no problems at all.

  • @stealthbargains @blonky Thks. Will do some research on those brands and models. It woruld seem the printers themselves are cheap its the disposables where they makd the money.

    • Any laser printer will be more cost effective than your old inkjet. There's none of that "we need to randomly use ink to clean nozzles" crap that inkjets do.

I use a Samsung multifunction. I'm happy with the quality, but I think they may have exited the printer business a few years ago.

      • Bought out by HP and have only higher end multi function stuff now sadly.
I had a small B&W Samsung for a few years bought second hand with little use by owner ran it till toner run out 2 years later never a jam or fault gave it away to student

  • Been using A Fuji b&w MF laser for a few years. Never a problem and cheap toner from ebay works fine.

  • @xywolap Can I ask what model fuji?

Brother 1210, got it on sale from GG about a year ago and hasn't missed a beat

  • Just for those interested. Ended up with a Brother HL-L2305W b & W laser printer from OfficeWorks for $98. Comes with a 700 page toner cartridge. Prints 23 pages/min. 2400x600 DPi. Holds 250 sheets. Wifi. Toner TN-2330 - $78 at Officeworks which is meant to print up to 1200 pages. CPL computers have genuine toner for $61.

I'll post an update on how it goes. Thanks all for the ideas and help.

    • I'm looking to update our old ink-jet printer and was wondering how you are going with the Brother HL-L2305W printer almost a year after purchase?

      • @kajke No issue. Should have brought a lazer printer ages ago. Look for the double sided printer version as that will save paper if your doing alot of large printing runs. Print quality is ok. Not fantastic as in super high quality. We use for essays, printing out reports, statements etc.

        • Thanks so much, Dedbny

          • @[Deactivated]: @kajke.You can also use non genuine toner. Go for the $25 priced high yield ones. My experience is the cheaper ones less than $10 no good.

            • @Melb69: I usually stick to genuine parts so as to not void the warranty…probably over-cautious tho.

It would be most appreciated if you can provide a link to the non-genuine toner you recommend.

  • Just picked up the fact that it doesn't do the automatic duplex printing. So maybe if your interested in saving some paper get the HL-L2375DW. But its $158 at moment. More in initial cost, but suppose in long-term cheaper if you use duplex printing. The toner for that unit is $81 at Officeworks at the moment.

Only an hour to set up to wifi for all out devices. Needed to download drivers. As with all lazers they take a bit of warming up first off. 18s in this case.

    • Just use manual duplex printing… the option is usually found in the print window.

      • @onevstheworld. Yeah. That's fine for 1 page or 2, but not if you want to print out many. Should be fine for us to use single. Just flagging to others it may be worth going up to the next model.

The printing with the 2305 is quick once it gets going. Looks good so far.

  • It can so 4 pages into 1. Probably only good as a draft to check formatting as suspect the text would be too small to read easily. Option though as well. Also if a high yeild toner is used you should get more prints and be even more cost effective.
