Looking for a New Vacuum

I'm looking for a new vacuum and through I might take advantage of the current eBay sales.

It's just general use around the house. House is mostly tile but there are also carpets.

I'd probably rather buy something corded, so I'm not paying the same or more money for less suction.

Are any of the Dysons actually worth the money or are they just the iPhones of the vacuum industry?

Thanks.

  • Not the greatest vacuum in the world but for what you get it's not bad only downside is no replacement filter as far as I know.. maybe another vacuum might have similar filters but yeah you are stuck with the replacement one only I believe so.

$29.00 I bought two with one as back up.

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/contempo-2-in-1-stick-handhe…

Beats a barrel or canister vacuum any day of the week.

Can't say how good it is compared to a Dyson but for me it does the job.

Waiting for the V6 to become sub $150 then I might consider it but for now these big a $29.00 2 in 1 corded stick vacuums are the best.

  • I don't get the dyson thing, its a vacuum cleaner to suck dirt from the floors
So i think you are on the money, they are selling the brand like iphone/tesla
Im often told that i must upgrade to a dyson as it will blow my mind specifically the cordless models , and its usually the same people who have an iPhone who say i should also change my android device to Apple.

If you can find a miele on any of the sales, consider one of them as i have had a good experience with them
I have had a miele s5211 for 13 years, works great and never had any issues with it, the suction is great, will keep it probably for a few more years as it doesn't seem to want to give up, has a few different modes, quiet/rug etc
if i needed a new one, i would go for another miele which are made in Germany.

Used weekly and need to change the filter and bag once every 6 months. I seen this model selling up until a few years ago i think the latest range is the C3 range.

  • I have two Dysons, a stick (V6) and a floor barrel DC37; I agree with the iPhone comparison, overpriced bling indeed.

I'll summarise my feelings this way. I have never had to unpick dust and blockages more than I have with the Dysons. Inevitably I'll need something sharp (knife, 7/11 coffee stirrer) to remove debris from the stick (which lasts 20 minutes on a full charge) and the larger floor unit is also prone to blockage and doesn't do appreciably better than my last cheapie.

If I was in the market now I'd get the popular machine at Kmart, it's about $89.

  • Are any of the Dysons actually worth the money

Upright ones are worth the money for sure.

    The pull around ones, no

The new V10 is great for apartments etc.

  • I bought a Dyson V6 slim a year ago when it was on sale. The battery life is decent, enough for me to clean massive house with various type of floors (thick carpet, laminated floor, wooden staircase and tiles).

It sucks well and the smaller head means I could go anywhere. I also don't smell the 'dusty smell' from the air coming out of the other side of the vacuum cleaner—-which I used to experience with the cheap-ish ones.

  • +1

We have a miele complete. If/when I need to get another vacuum, I'll get a miele again.

  • I've got a v6 Dyson. Cordless is great for small house. Have not compared it to other cordless options. Paid $330 nzd new. Bigger corded vacuum doesn't get used anymore.

Just bought a xiaomi robot vacuum. Haven't tried it yet bc we have builders doing the kitchen and the house is too messy to use it.

  • I've never owned a dyson but have many stay at home mum friends who love them. I've only used a dyson once (at grandparents house) and hated it.

I have a xiaomi robot and it is my saviour. Super easy to use, I have to empty the dust tray after every clean (3 bed family home) and clean the main brush once a week/fortnight but that's it.

I've also had a miele for years and that's been great but very neglected since the robot came along.

  • I've got the Dyson DC29, corded, basic vacuum cleaner that only comes with hard/soft floor head.

    Pro's:

    • No bags, so not an ongoing cost.
    • Seems to pick up a fair amount of crap.
    • Relatively cheap, compared to other Dyson vacuums.
    • Dust bin holds a fair amount.

    Con's:

    • Loud. Very, loud.
    • Cord isn't super long.
    • Tips over easily
    • Is a bit of a pain to steer around corners and furniture and gets stuck easily.
    • Emptying dust bin is messy and usually leaves a cloud of dust.
    • Has a flaw in the design (IMO) where the hose connects to the body via a small port and bits of stuff easily clog it.

Had I known all of this, I'd not have bothered with a Dyson. I'd still go for something that is bagless because we vacuum quite often, but I would have spent less than the Dyson, which I think is more the name than the vacuum itself IMO.

Also, I can't necessarily speak to this specifically, or scientifically, but the filter that sits inside the canister seems pretty dubiously designed to me as in I'm not confident that it's filtering out all of the crap that I could be potentially breathing in.
