Recommend Me Some Kitchen Stuff

So thinking of updating my kitchen appliances and stuff and maybe adding some more.

Disclosure: it is for a strict vegetarian household, no garlic or onion also.

Food Processor - honestly forgot atm what these things are mainly used for.. Probably salad? Or chopping items evenly and quickly since we sometimes cook large batches. Will pay more for something easy to use and sturdy may or may not be used by people who don't know how to be delicate with expensive items and may be prone to being damaged. :(

Grinder - to grind poppy seeds that is used in a fry pan usually with potato or veggies very very nice but friend needs a grinder to make it into paste, also may be used to grind some salt rocks into fine salt powder.

Fryer - since it is a vegetarian household sometimes I feel like frozen chips or frozen potato gems or hash browns or other vegetables.

I would probably do also eggplant, spring rolls and samosas with this so maybe can't choose air frying but let me know if a samosa can be done in an air fryer or not from scratch.

Recommend any other handy kitchen appliances you use to help get things done easier or tastier.

Already have a toaster, kettle, rice cooker and sandwich maker not the press kind so anything else will be welcomed for recommendations.

It is for a vegetarian kitchen so a mini BBQ probably won't get much usage imho and would feel wrong to me not be used for snags, steaks and meat burgers etc.

Was thinking of a steamer but couldn't find any things to use it with that don't have onion or garlic or egg / meat products in it.

We also have a pressure cooker of the whistle kind but no instapot yet.

Have a large oven also already that I use for pizzas and chips etc.

A good waffle iron. A good blender. A big flat griddle. Then breakfast is covered.

  • Most important ones we have:

    • Blender for veg/fruit smoothies. Get a powerful one with multiple years of warranty for around $100.

    • We have a Silit pressure cooker and later on a Breville Fast Slow Cooker. Both used regularly for stews including beans, soups, steaming, cooking rice.

    • Air fryer for corn, chestnuts, bread, etc.

    • Coffee machine - the DeLonghi Dedica Pump Espresso from Amazon AU recently is pretty good for the price.

    • Big mixing bowls for big salads.

    • Colander to wash and strain veg.

    • Good knife set to cut and prep the veg.

    • Collection of lock and lock containers, e.g. to store beans, rice, leftovers.

    Don't need:

    • Food processor.
  • I agree with ihbh on the knife set. There are lots of forums on whirlpool on how to select and maintain a good set. We went with Victorinox and always having sharp knives in the kitchen is a joy.

Get yourself a jar opener. I can't believe I never used one until two years ago. They are awesome!

  • no garlic or onion also.

So no meat and no flavour? Yikes…..

    • I think it also extends to no garlic, onion, chives, schallots, leeks and spring onions as well.

Yep… Sounds horrid. Vegetarian is fine! But don't hold back on the taste!

        • Fwiw I eat this outside because I love food and flavour but in the house it's a strict no go zone.

@AlienC sounds like a horrid place to live:

        • @AlienC: Don't know why you're being negged for being involuntarily vegetarian inside the house. I mean, if it was voluntary…

(mostly joking on that last point - I friends (who I'm willingly friends with) who're also vegetarian and don't eat onions/garlic/shallots/etc.)

  • Are you Buddhist?

    • Honestly can't say aka no idea what I am atm besides cold and hungry and sleep deprived out of my mind.

      • Go turn on a heater and get some sleep instead of being here on OzB lol. We're not that important/entertaining.

Probably has some yoga enthusiasts in the household. Garlic and Onion are avoided in the yogic diet.

        Bingo bango

        • Are you a vegetarian also or just playing by the house rules? Either way you should get a tortilla press and cast iron pan to make fresh tortillas then make yourself some pulled jackfruit tacos, as an avid meat eater those things are delicious!

    i recommend some meat

Sandwich press/Jaffa maker. Amazing if you're feeling lazy or have left-overs. Two pieces of bread, chuck in basically anything, voila - a meal.

If you like baking - which can sometimes make up for the lack of meat (with a lot of cheese) - a stand mixer. But get a good one because even bad/cheap ones cost hundreds and will break a lot sooner than a decent one.

  • stove always helps

    or a souffle pump

    • That jumped very quickly from "basic" to "highly specialized and niche".

      • every kitchen should have a souffle pump

        • I assume if you're into cooking enough to know about souffle pumps… you should be able to do a souffle without one, right?

  • pancake frypan. good for making tortillas, potato frittas, okonomiyaki and of course, pancakes. aliexpress has a few. theres a greenpan one on amazon but its about $100. looks dreamy.

food processor - buy a can of beans (kidney or white beans) and throw it in the food processor with a bunch of mixed vegetables you have cut to fried rice size and pan fried (carrots, mushrooms, green, capsicum, all your favourites). throw it in the food processor, add salt and spices, some olive oil, big spoon of peanut butter and big spoon of chilli paste. makes an awesome dip that goes with everything. when you get it right, you can start experimenting and mixing roast eggplant, different bean mixes, chickpeas and fresh garden herbs.

  • Merged from Some Essential Helpful Kitchen Items

Looking for a few things to make things easier in the kitchen

Some item I have already found include

    • digital kitchen scale
    • electric peeler
    • electric can opener
    • iron cast skillets (aldi)

    Some items I still need

    • automatic stirrer / whisk blender for sauce making
    • automatic or electric grater
    • automatic or electric salad slicer
    • some sort of maybe salad blender (for making pastes, sauces, maybe milkshake even, trying to find an all in one item for making basically sandwich ingredients and pasta ingredients for starters)

    That is about it.

I have most of the items I need for most cooking processes just need a good fast and safer way to grate cheese and carrots and maybe slice up big batches of random items for bulk cooking for monthly vegetarian soup kitchen in the neighbourhood centre.

Was thinking of a random blender or nutribullet but have been told that this might not be good for all kinds of cooking and only very small narrow areas of cooking.

Worst case scenario I just buy the cheapest ones that don't look bad from ebay or target/bigw/coles/woolworth/aldi but open to quality recommendations just ozbargain worthy

    • lol i almost forgot about this thread.. thanks ozbargain mods.
