  • My Cavoodle came to $493/year (standard cover with $0 excess, fortnightly installments). While I hope no harm comes to my new pupper; I did the maths and figure he'd need about $8,000 worth of surgery in lifetime to be worth it (80% benefit), but as many surgeries being around $2000-$4000, and seeing some pretty horrific bill shock incidents; I'm hoping I can beat the odds of the insurance actuaries!

Our 9 month old terrier went through seizure/poisoning episode, and had him in the emergency for 4 days. The total cost racked up over $4000! had to pay about $800 from pocket.

I cant see myself without insurance, especially with pups!

Lucky they had you and not me as the owner.

I don't understand how people can spend that much money on a pet. That's overseas holiday money we're talking + cost of new pet.

        • @nurries: I respect loyalty, but choose to cap that in most circumstances at about $50.

        • +2

@nurries: given how heart breaking it was to see him go through that, and how much of a difference he has made in our lives, I would gladly spend the money to get him better if I had to again and I Would gladly give up one holiday to save his life.

FYI, I'm with PIA! And not with woolworths pet insurance

        • +2

@nurries: are you serious?? Pets are part of the family.

        • @aspirepranesh: Can you please adopt me? I'm fully vaccinated.

@AngryChicken: not really after an angry chicken at the moment in our lives tho 🤣🤣 sorry!

        • -2

@nurries: Depends. Pets are like anything you own. You're not going to throw away a car if it's having problems, but it can set you back a lot. But everyone should consider getting a new car rather than fixing up one which has been seriously written off (poor dog) or is nearing it's EOL.

The scary part is that I think this way with children, luckily I'm still early 20s and have a long while until I think of children……

I really, really hope I don't have a child who has problems in their early years because I am the kind of person to contemplate not spending $50k-150k just to improve a child's life. I seriously consider anything above $250k worthy of euthanizing a child under the age of 5. But that is not legal, nor morally allowed. I'd probably commit suicide before working my entire life to pay off a medical bill that high.

Hopefully I become stupid enough to disregard everything I said above.

          Each to their own.

        • @StoneSin: I'm not sure there's must risk to you anyway. Medicare applies to humans, not Fido.

        • You should keep that to urself not post a public comment about how you disrespect a animal. All pet has a heart and a brain and no different from a living human being. They look upon you everyday and make put a smile on your face.

A dog has a true heart and never disrespect it's owner unless you treat it like rubbish.
I feed and look after my dog like with the best of my ability.

          @chaz0:

I'm more than entitled to share what i think, and at no stage have i demonstrated any lack of respect for animals. Maybe you're from a one-party State like China where that kind of thing isn't encouraged. Your English certainly isn't too hot.

You think humans and pets are somehow equivalent? Well while it's difficult to get estimates, this article claims about 250,000 cats and dogs are put down each year in Australia simply as there's no one prepared or able to look after them. I don't see anyone putting humans down at that level, do you?

Dogs are pack animals - they hunt in packs where communication is critical. They'll make friends with just about anything if they imagine they may be off hunting with them soon. While you might delude yourself into thinking that your dog treats you with 'respect', it's actually just prepping for the next hunt. They're killers you know - full-on carnivores.

Tell me, what's the history of your dog? Was it torn away from its mother as a pup so it would bond more quickly with you? If so, i think that makes you an animal abuser. Not a comfortable thought is it?

Get real. You look after the dog only because it serves a purpose that you perceive of use to you. If or when that view changes you'll be updating it with another brutalised pup. As you may have gathered, your implied declaration of moral superiority isn't cutting it with me.

  • pet insurance for a new pupper

    Insurance for a puppet?

    • No, a pup.

    • We are more like the puppets, being so easily wrapped around this puppies paws. He's pulling all the strings!

Signed up this morning for our puppy, didn't see anything like this! Might shoot off a cheeky email to see if we can claim it.

I am a big advocate for pet insurance but I wanted to share my experiences with having pet insurance. We are with Woolworths which is backed by Holland (there Is only 3 pet insurers in Australia)

We adopted our dog when he was 2 years old and have had him insured the 8 years we have had him.

The first year our insurance was around $44 a month ($528 a year)
By the fourth year this was up to $65 a month ($780 a year)
By year six this was $77 a month ($924 a year)
With increases every year, but every second year the increase was substantial.

Now this year is year 8, also the year our dog turned 10. 10 is the age when you can’t get new insurance but can maintain the insurance you have if you want. Guess what the monthly premium was this year? $114 a month, a jump of $28 a month the biggest single increase and when I called to question it the guy was pretty much well… would you like to cancel?

I understand costs go up.. sure but they literally made the price so high that you cancel as they don’t want to insure past 10 years old.

We sat down and did some maths and worked out if we had of put that money in a bank account every month and earned interest we would still have change from all we have spent on him.

Pet insurance is good for peace of mind for sure but don’t expect it to be viable when you are probably going to need it most, as your dog ages it becomes more and more expensive and less and less worth it.

  • Can you sign up and cancel after one month?

    • It likely terminates automatically on death of the pet, not that i'm proposing anything.

    • I rang and they said the gift card is sent after 60days.
