Know someone wanting to pull the trigger on an Alienware 17 R4, like this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alienware-17-R4-i7-7700HQ-3-8GHz…
Are there any better deals for Alienware laptops with these kind of specs?

I got an 18 month old R4 a couple of years ago for 600. It was a great deal.
They appear on dell outlet all the time however looks like they are gone for this week - http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…
For an Alienware it's ok. For the specs itself you can do a bit better but not much better maybe a few hundred bucks for equivalent specs (remember you can get a GTX1060 same specs cpu, ram, hdd/ssd for easily $1000 AUD less in the $1600 AUD range so $1000 AUD for a 1060 to 1070 upgrade is madness but this may come with tobii eye tracking let me check which is a few hundred bonus - just checked it doesn't have it. This coupled with the fact it is only 1080p is a hard pass for me especially when I have seen US ones go for same price with crazier specs think 4k 32gb ram, more storage). It's all about how much you want to milk what you got really, if you are loaded it is an OK price not bad but not great.
If this was 6 months ago it would be a good deal but right now middle of 2018 close to new gpus end of the year it is an average deal and in 6 months more time if same price it will be a very average deal like a very easy pass. You want your money to take you as far as it can go and this isn't really that far for the money but not bad either.
For me personally I wouldn't jump on this deal until it was minimum below $1900 total delivered since I can find similar or cheaper on Gumtree and haggle better prices if I try hard enough which is fine by me. I love the bargaining game.
UNiDAYS members is currently able to get 15% off full price (usually only 10%) of Alienware computers for both desktop and laptop (until 26 July).

So for the cheapest config of the latest 17" R4, https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/cty/pdp/spd/alienware-17-lap… (8th Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Processor, Windows 10 Home, 16GB memory, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 & 128GB SSD + 1TB hard drive), it'll be $2549.15 (able to confirm this price at checkout).
Nice find, they are indeed a student.
No Alienware is a good deal
