    • processors haven't really changed much speedwise, they are just more energy efficient.

  • Why the screen getting bigger and bigger, I prefer 11inch Macair, so easy to carry around

    • There's always the 12' MacBook but I wished they continued the 11' Air too. I also have an 11' Air and it's perfect for traveling and despite being 5 years old has a battery that lasts around 5 hours which is great.

      • Other than the price, the 12" MacBook is actually better - It's actually smaller overall.

      • I have a 11' Mac Air similar as yours, 4.5 years ago, and face same battery issues, and its getting slow. I am not sure if i should change battery or get a new MacBook. I use web browsing and Microsoft office .

Shame no discount in i9 macbook book pro I was really counting in using it as a tax deductable space heater this winter

    • My MBP with aluminium chassis and quiet fans never gets hot

  • -4

Soooo this is not 10% off

The top model they have listed for “3689”
Is only 130$ cheaper then the Apple website

  • Is it true that teachers and people who work in tech get like 30% off Apple products?

    • The Apple developer program offered one 30% off hardware purchase every year back until the discounts discontinued a few years back so I think this is a possibility.

      • so no more discount for Apple developer program anymore ? even 10% off?

        • No. it finished years ago but was great at the time. Well, it still exists but the discounts dont.

    • More like 10-15%.

Keep in mind if you're looking at these, don't get the Core i9 model. It's not sufficiently cooled for sustained heavy use (video encoding, etc). Throttles pretty abysmally. Below stock clocks. If you aren't looking at doing the kind of work where the throttling would matter then the i9 wouldn't have been for you anwyay.

    • Unless you have room in your freezer while doing renders

  • That a lot of money for a laptop with a mediocre GPU at best. For the same price you could get a laptop with at least a GTX 1070 that would run circles around it and not have sub antiquate chips used on the motherboard that will fail 3 days out of warranty. Apple has lost its way since Steve Jobs has passed away and if he knew what Apple was doing now, He would be turning in his grave.

When was the last time you heard Steve Wozniak singing Apple's praise?

    • most business laptops have the same pricing

    • +7

Every time there is someone who compares business laptops to gaming laptops. Can you find a gaming laptop that has 10 hours of battery life? Can you find a gaming laptop that is lighter than average business laptops? Can you find a gaming laptop that is of a similar thickness? Can you find even a more premium build in gaming laptops?

      • This has the look of the business laptop, but comparing to any other business laptop with similar specs, it falls behind. You pay premium here just for the apple logo.

        • Apple logo? How about the OS? I think its not fair just to keep comparing based off specs.

        • @ozb-fan: That only matters if you prefer OS with little to no compatibility but polished UI. Personally alot of what I do requires apps that work well with Windows. Often the Mac alternatives are expensive or just not there. To me the OS looks good but it suits non technical user more who are after ease of use rather than capability. Also the reason I like Android phones where you are not barred from making full use of all functionality unlike Apple where you are barred from most features of a phone. As such the Mac OS is a negative for me.

        • @parallelparadox: I don't see how that's apple's fault. Most app devs will always go with the most popular OS for $$$

        • @Lolno234: It isnt Apple's fault but on the same note it is the same reason why the Mac OS is not a consideration unless it is something specific you need. Otherwise for most people it becomes a comparison of Hardware for what you pay.

If that was the case, since Windows has better compatibility, they should charge double what Apple is charging and most developers will pay for it. If anything it is a matter of personal need/preference, so if you think you need Mac OS because of how it looks/operates for you, then go for it. Hence why when I am asked 'How about the OS' that is not a consideration in this argument for me.

    • 13" with an eGPU seems to be a decent option for this gen

    • Apple has lost its way since Steve Jobs has passed

Mate, Apple is more Steve-like than ever. Everything they're doing is straight out of the classic Steve playbook. If anything, they've softened a little and have been more flexible to catering to people's wishes than Steve would've been.

      • Apple is more Steve-like than ever. Everything they're doing is straight out of the classic Steve playbook.

        This is simply untrue.

Steve was a visionary able to realise the needs of the consumer before they did and steer them in that direction (sometimes kicking and screaming).

He would never have let the top of the line CPU model out of the gate knowing it couldn't perform at its peak because of the thermal issues. He would've forced the teams to live at their desks until it was fixed - so you are correct that they've softened since he left.

I've always preferred the Mac OS, it's more intuitive and they seem to be getting that side of the product right IMO. PC users may say it's too restrictive, but at risk of offending both sides of this coin - maybe you guys just don't know how to use it as thoroughly as Windows, doesn't mean it isn't possible.

As for Coffee Lake CPU's with 64gb DDR4 running the Mac OS, its great… as long as you house it correctly in a tower like the system I built almost six months ago and can easily upgrade any time I like. Plus the warranty on PC parts really puts Apple to shame, 5, 7, 10 years. RAM was lifetime warranty if I remember correctly. If only Windows didn't hurt my eyes with its bad UI :/

  • Anyone know how to get instant JB discounted gift cards? I normally order gift cards through ambassador card (NIB) but it takes a few days for my DJs cards expect it’d be same for JB.

    • +1

Pokitpal or Entertainment Book for 5% off.

I've not used the gift cards from Entertainment Book so I don't know how long it takes but Pokitpal is instant (not exactly 5% saved though as they charge fees).

      • My brother just notified me of this, only after I took the plunge with $1000 from Entertainment Book.. now the waiting game begins.

wonder if they will let you do a custom order in store

    • Says in the heading that it excludes Build to Order

      • That's why I said I wonder, because there's been times when the stores are ok with letting a BTO through.

I am by no means a fanboy (Pixel owner). However there is one reason i still use a Mac… osX. I will never go back to Windows < my wife still uses this crap operating system… Nothing but issues - constantly. I am not a power user, so hardware does not matter too much, but the simple, clean, no issues operating system does!

    • Sounds like you haven't used Windows 10 lately.

      • I used both. Still prefer the OSX to be honest for creative works (photo/video editing). But for office suites/document editing Windows are more preferred.

  • Hey all, looking for some advice.
I currently own a 2012 15" MBP retina, but it's starting to have issues (crashes a lot). Honestly it doesn't seem like MBP has improved much since I bought mine 6 years ago, despite the price increasing >$1000???
I've since swapped from iPhone to Pixel 2 so feel in no way tied to Apple or OSX anymore
Looking for a laptop suggestion - I don't play games or anything like that.. Most of my usage is watching videos / using Excel / browsing the internet / remote desktop-ing into work, and I have a lot of music stored.
Are 2-in-1's worth it? I currently don't own a tablet but have thought about buying one. Any of the other JB HiFi 10% (+5%) off deals good for a replacement for me?
Should i wait for the huawei matebook? Google Pixelbook maybe? too many options to consider, but surely the collective OZB knowledge can cut down my research time..
    Thanks in advance!

    • Its largely been said above, but for your usage (similar to mine) the macbooks are best in class. Albeit $$$

    • +1

Sure it's a hardware problem? Try reinstalling MacOS (after backing up of course) and see how it runs barebones.

If all goes well then restore your backup. If it starts to crash again it is most certainly something you've installed.

Also, if it is a hardware problem the 2012 MBP is fairly repairable (7/10 on iFixIt: https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_15%22_Unibody_Mid_…).

      • Thanks - I'm not sure what the issue is. I haven't done any real troubleshooting yet so that might be the wiser place to start, given it is still perfectly fine apart from it's crashing issues. The crashing issues are somewhat random. Sometimes it'll work fine for a few days, sometimes it'll crash repeatedly. Might engage some apple support

    • If you're not too fussed with changing operating systems it might be worthwhile to look at the Dell XPS range. In my experiences, it has the best build quality for a windows laptop.

While I'm not the biggest fan of touch screens I've got friends who love it. Possibly something to consider why buying a new laptop.

    • Yeah go for an Macbook Air even, that will handle all those tasks - don't need top of the range MBP

Dell XPS are also solid laptops

  • +2

I think I'm gonna take a knee and pucker up. Always wanted to try a Mac and a friend uses Logic Pro. Would be nice to collaborate. I was sure these new models would probably get excluded from these 10% off sales (like the iMac Pro now is), and indeed Good Guys are doing 10% off too with new models excluded. I think it's time to jump in and try my luck with the still questionable keyboard. Life is short.

  • I don't think I could justify 3.6k for a laptop but from the upvotes, apparently it's a ripper of a deal.

The same specs or better on an XPS 15 would be under 3k.

    • If you want good specs go buy a gaming laptop.

      • You don't need a gaming laptop to get good specs.

The difference between gaming laptop and thin and light is the extra thickness and weight offer better cooling to prevent throttling like the i9 Macbook Pro. But that only matters if you game on it, which I don't.

Someone managed to price match with OW for an extra 5% off!

  • Good deal, want to upgrade my macbook pro one day

  • Too cheap Apple! Make it even expensive please! People will still buy :P

  • Does JB allow no interest payment plans for terms of up to a year? And if so has anyone used them/recommend?

  • +1

I price matched at Myer and paid with my Myer gift cards … there is not stock yet (and nothing online) but they get them in soon and I could order already.

    • Don't forget to use Myer one card to earn shopping credits.

  • Can't find stock anywhere. Was hoping to just walk in and pick one up as I'm going on holidays this weekend. Oh well.

Confirmed Officeworks price match with another 5% off ($185). Just ordered the 15" 512GB for $3504.64

    • Thanks I'm about to do this now. Just call up and ask for a price match? Do you give your payments details etc over the phone?

      • +1

Yep, just call the number on their website, tell them the Officeworks product details and to match with JB Hifi, went off for ages checking everything. I'm doing click and collect, but Metro delivery is also free. Pay over the phone…

I'm a Long time Mac user and have just taken delivery of a new Dell XPS 15" with nearly the same basic specs as one of the just updated Macbook Pros.
    8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Processor
    16GB DDR4-2666MHz, 2x8GB (apple is 2400MHz I believe)
    512GB SSD

Major differences with the Dell comes is
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5
15.6" 4K Ultra HD Touch screen - (already think this is more useful than the touchbar)
HDMI port, USB 3 port, SD slot - No more dongles
Only 1 Thunderbolt 3 port but has seperate power connector so probably wont be an issue.
Substantially thicker - the lower half of the Dell ie keyboard is probably the same as the overall thickness of the Mac.

I paid $3028 inc gst for the Dell (with 2 years onsite warranty), the updated comparable Macbook is $4099 (10% of $3,689.10) with only 1 year warranty. Dell had a sale 5 days after ordering, which I lodged a price guarantee and have already been given a $470 refund so actual cost is $2558.

Performance appears to be well ahead of my 2016 MacBook Pro with basic testing of Premiere Pro, Media Encoder and Resolve.

I used to be able to rationalise the premium price of Macs but the $1100 in this case is crazy

I've got an XPS15 cause I couldn't afford a MBP. I'm just not getting the same flawless user experience when I was playing the MBP in the Apple Store —The near perfect track pad, the ability to open the lid without holding down the base, the perceived stability of the system. It's the little details that enhances the user experience, where as Dell design team doesn't have the same amount of scrutiny.

My XPS15 has flickering issues and am not using the touch screen as it's not accurate. The carbonfibre finish is surprisingly a fingerprint magnet & hard to clean. When I plugged my Logitech mouse receiver into the USB port beside the powerport, it gets a little wonky (interference?)

Using the touch screen: Extremely difficult to adjust the exposure sliding bar in Adobe Lightroom, for example, it lacks accuracy as it's not optimized for fingers.. Having to elevate your hand above the keyboard for prolonged duration is not very ergonomic, unlike a tablet. Touchbar may prove more useful in this instance? I disabled the touchscreen and it gave a good hour of battery. I own 2 Dell laptops & using 4 different Dell PC at work, none of them didn't have any issues.

      ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Managed to get an extra 5% pricebeat from Officeworks, will pick it up tomorrow ($2307 total), thanks OP.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar 256GB - at kogan even cheaper, are they not the same?

    • +1

I believe the one on Kogan is 7th gen processor with dual cores. The MacBooks on jbhifi are 8th gen quad core or more.

    • Lol interesting that the promo image looks like a fire or explosion coming from within the laptop. Irony or a subtle joke from the folks in marketing?

  • +1

Love my macbook pro. Bought 2013 for 3 grand.. still running smooth.
partner was upset at me for dropping 3 grand on a mac when a 1.5 grand dell would do..

    she's on her third one..

I just can't stand how windows pc's just bog down all of a sudden.. no new apps, just the same use over and over.. my mac's still as zippy.. partner's laptop of the same age had been reformatted a gazillion times.. we dont' even get it online anymore.. still bogs down after a few months.. (I just use it to for VLC in our living room)

Anway.. to each their own. I was able to justify my purchase from 5 years ago…
If you don't think it's worth it.. that's fine.

    • Well apple does a better job of optimizing their hardware for OSX and iOS there's no doubt about that. It's why used MacBooks and iPhones are so much more expensive than their counterparts that costed the same at launch and why Apple products retain their value so much. I'd gladly pay twice as much than windows counterpart with even better specs if my laptop lasts twice as long.

  • These new macbook pros are like little personal heaters. 20 mins in Logic Pro or Reason and it feels like it's 100 degrees. almost too hot to touch the top case above the keyboard for more than a few seconds. glad I didn't spring for the i9. I reckon even the i7's will likely never get near their quoted potential speeds.

  • This deal is back again!
